Thanks to GIZ funding, Friday, 25 September 2026, marked Day Three and the final day of the Youth Volunteers’ Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA) training in Kayonza District.
The day was dedicated to reflection, action planning, and commitment turning the knowledge gained during the training into practical action.
Youth Volunteers worked in groups to identify vulnerabilities within their communities, explore who is most affected, determine what actions they can take, and identify the stakeholders they can work with to address these challenges. The goal was clear: turn HRBA principles into meaningful community action and ensure no one is left behind.
We were honoured to be joined by the Director of Planning of Kayonza District, who highlighted the opportunities available for young people to explore and benefit from. He also emphasized the connection between these opportunities, youth participation, and the District’s Imihigo (performance contracts), calling on Youth Volunteers to play an active role in driving positive results and contributing to the District’s development priorities.
The GIZ representative also addressed the Youth Volunteers, emphasizing their important role in advancing inclusive communities where human rights principles guide action and decision-making. She appreciated the commitment of the District and HAC in making the training a success and reaffirmed GIZ’s commitment to continued collaboration towards more inclusive and equitable communities.
In his closing remarks, the HAC Executive Director thanked GIZ for entrusting HAC with the training, the Kayonza District leadership for its continued collaboration, and the Youth Volunteers for their active participation, patience, and commitment to becoming champions of change in their communities.
Three days of learning. One shared commitment: putting human rights at the heart of community action and leaving no one behind.

Thanks to GIZ funding, Thursday, 24 September 2026, marked Day Two of the Youth Volunteers’ Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA) training in Kayonza District.
The day focused on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, reminding youth volunteers that they serve communities made up of people with diverse backgrounds, abilities, education levels, health conditions, and socio-economic circumstances. Every person deserves dignity, equal opportunity, and meaningful inclusion so that no one is left behind.
The session also explored intersectionality, highlighting how people facing multiple and compounded vulnerabilities may require reasonable accommodation and additional support to access services and participate fully.
Being a youth volunteer means being a servant, advocate, and voice for those who may face barriers because of their circumstances.
The Community Policing CIP also joined the session and emphasized the important role of youth volunteers in community policing, applauding the strong partnership between the Rwanda National Police and Youth Volunteers in building safer, crime-free communities.

Today, Hope and Care Organization (HAC) brought together 80+ youth volunteers from across Kayonza District for a three-day training on the Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA).
The training aims to equip youth volunteers to become HRBA champions, strengthening their role in community development and in the implementation of key government programs, including Imihigo.
On Day 1, district stakeholders, including JADF, Rwanda National Police and RIB, joined the training and shared practical perspectives from their work.
In his opening remarks, the HAC Executive Director emphasized the important role youth volunteers play in advancing community development. The District Volunteers Coordinator also reminded participants of their critical contribution to implementing key district priorities.
The day's sessions introduced participants to human rights, their principles and the importance of dignity and respect reinforcing that human rights are inherent to every person.
Police and RIB further enriched the discussions with real-life examples of human rights violations in communities, helping youth volunteers better understand how to identify, prevent, report and respond to concerns while supporting the protection of others.

GIZ Rwanda and Hope and Care Organization Strengthen Partnership

This Wednesday, we were pleased to welcome the GIZ Rwanda Rights-Based Approach Program for a constructive discussion on our ongoing collaboration in promoting gender equality, preventing violence, and advancing human rights in Kayonza District and across the Eastern Province.

Both teams appreciated the progress achieved so far and reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a strong and sustainable partnership that contributes to a more inclusive society where everyone’s rights and dignity are respected.
