Congratulations to the young women entrepreneurs of the Gems cohort in Kayonza, who have received their certificates! 🎓

Gems is an entrepreneurship stream of Grow 2 Scale (G2S), implemented by ESP in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation. It supports young women entrepreneurs with business training, coaching, market linkages and access to finance.

We were proud to host this cohort at Urugo Women’s Opportunity Center. Seeing these women celebrate what they have learned and take it back to their businesses and communities was a joy to witness.

Well done, ladies. This is only the beginning!

It starts with a single strand of sisal, rough, raw, unassuming. In the hands of our Urugo women artisans, it becomes something else entirely. Thread by thread, they wove this ceiling piece patiently, deliberately, entirely by hand. No machines. No shortcuts. Just skill passed down through generations of women, and time well spent.

Then came installation day, watching a flat woven piece rise into place, transforming an ordinary ceiling into a warm, textured centerpiece glowing above an executive suite at Vintage Cottage

This is more than a design detail. It’s proof of what happens when we trust the hands of our women artisans with big ideas. From fibre to finished space, every piece tells the story of the Urugo women who made it.

And this is just the beginning. Hotels, restaurants, apartments, homes, offices wherever you are, we can bring this same craftsmanship to your space. Let Urugo transform your walls, ceilings, and interiors into something truly one of a kind. ✨

On 4 August, we welcomed a delegation from the African Development Bank, Dr. Jemimah Micere Njuki, Nathalie Gisabo Gahunga, and Cynthia Kamikazi, to Urugo Women’s Opportunity Center in Kayonza. 🇷🇼

The team toured our production units, met our trainees, and heard how we turn skills training into real income: women learn a trade and earn from it through commercial production, on the path to formal employment or their own businesses.

Dr. Njuki called it ‘an innovative and practical approach to women’s economic empowerment’ and encouraged us to think of Urugo not as a project, but as a national model for Rwanda’s Human Capital Development and Agriculture priorities. It was a shared vision: scaling this model to reach more women, in more places.

Urugo Women’s Opportunity Center was honored to welcome a delegation from Model of Architecture Serving Society , including Katie Swenson , whose leadership reflects MASS’s model of architecture in service of society.

The visit offered an opportunity to share Urugo’s story, a space built to empower women in Kayonza through skills training, craft, and community. We were grateful for the chance to exchange ideas on how thoughtful design and social impact can work together.

It begins as nothing more than dried grass.

Sun-bleached raffia, sorted strand by strand by hands that have done this a thousand times. Then it’s woven knot after knot, hour after hour, until fiber becomes fabric, and fabric becomes form.

A hand-finished leather handle joins the raffia, and what was once raw material becomes something worth carrying.

This particular piece was made especially for Sonia Mugabo , and we couldn’t be prouder of where it’s ended up. From our artisans’ hands in Kayonza to a showroom floor, every stitch tells the story of the women who made it.
