Twizihije umusaruro w’umurimo, twubaka ejo heza h’u Rwanda, we celebrate the harvest of labor, building a better future for Rwanda.

At Urugo Women’s Opportunity Center, Umuganura is more than a harvest festival, it’s a reflection of who we are. Unity. Resilience. Progress. Values grown season after season by the women who weave, farm, and build alongside us.

Urugo Women’s Opportunity Center was honored to welcome a delegation from Model of Architecture Serving Society , including Katie Swenson , whose leadership reflects MASS’s model of architecture in service of society.

The visit offered an opportunity to share Urugo’s story, a space built to empower women in Kayonza through skills training, craft, and community. We were grateful for the chance to exchange ideas on how thoughtful design and social impact can work together.

It begins as nothing more than dried grass.

Sun-bleached raffia, sorted strand by strand by hands that have done this a thousand times. Then it’s woven knot after knot, hour after hour, until fiber becomes fabric, and fabric becomes form.

A hand-finished leather handle joins the raffia, and what was once raw material becomes something worth carrying.

This particular piece was made especially for Sonia Mugabo , and we couldn’t be prouder of where it’s ended up. From our artisans’ hands in Kayonza to a showroom floor, every stitch tells the story of the women who made it.
