Over the past few weeks, it has been busy at the coordination office.

The finals of the Igisoro project, a cooperation between Jumelage and the Rwanda Cultural Heritage Academy, took place at Rwanda Art Museum in the framework of the celebrations of the International Museum Day. After thrilling final matches, in the girls' category, UMUGISHA Rachel Happy from Huye Deaf School took first place and in the boys' category, MURWANASHYAKA Shema from G.S. Mburabuturo won. In recognition of their efforts the students received gifts to support their education.

After a good time at their partner school TSS Nyagahuru in Gisagara District, where they participated in cultural activities and exchanged on future collaborative projects, students and teachers from BBS Kirn visited the coordination office to share their experiences. This first visit of the two partners was particularly marked by the planting of friendship trees at TSS Nyagahuru.

For Gymnasium am Rรถmerkastell from Bad Kreuznach it was already the second visit to their partner school ES Munzanga in Karongi District. Besides talking about future collaboration, the students and teachers played volleyball together and also planted trees to honour their growing partnership. In addition, during a cooking class the German students and teachers learnt how to cook traditional Rwandan dishes. Their stop at the coordination office gave us the opportunity to learn more about their experiences. [...]

In early May, Layla Engeln, Managing Director of the Partnership Association in Mainz, visited her colleagues in Kigali. The programme included several project visits, during which she was able to gain first-hand insight into current developments on site. She visited a number of schools where projects had recently been successfully completed and accompanied the responsible colleagues in assessing potential new initiatives as well as in exchanges with project partners and other stakeholders on the Rwandan side. The attendance of the Igisoro competition in Huye also provided exciting insights: the traditional board game is experiencing growing attention and enthusiasm among young people.

A particular highlight of the trip was the time spent with the colleagues from the coordination office in Kigali. The personal exchange, close collaboration, and opportunity to further develop projects and partnerships together made the visit an especially valuable experience.

Anfang Mai besuchte Layla Engeln, Geschรคftsfรผhrerin des Partnerschaftsvereins in Mainz, die Kolleg*innen in Kigali.

On German Constitution Day (May 23), we commemorate the foundation of our democratic way of life in Germany. The German Constitution (Grundgesetz) was adopted in 1949 as a response to the crimes and contempt for human life that characterized the N**i era. It was intended to ensure that freedom, human dignity, and democracy are permanently protected.

At its core is the conviction that all people are equal in dignity and rightsโ€”regardless of origin, religion, gender, or lifestyle. The Grundgesetz stands for respect, openness, and the acceptance of every human being.
Especially in a time when openness and liberal values are not taken for granted everywhereโ€”and not always even in Germanyโ€”the Grundgesetz reminds us of how important it is to protect participation, diversity, and human rights.

International partnerships, such as those between Rhineland-Palatinate and Rwanda, demonstrate that successful cooperation thrives where people meet as equals and share a common understanding of respect, equality, and humanity.
Grundgesetz Day is therefore not only a look back at history, but also a call to action to jointly preserve and strengthen our values and contribute to peaceful coexistence.

In light of the Igisoro project implemented by Jumelage at the moment we would like to take the opportunity to present this traditional Rwandan strategy board game and show how it is played. Igisoro is a variant of the mancala family and is played, with slight regional differences in East Africa. In Rwanda, the game became popular in the 16th century, during the reign of King Ruganzu II Ndoli. There are places in Rwanda where Igisoro boards have been carved from a rock, such as Gasoro, in Nyanza District or in Kibuye. Normally however, the board is made of wood and consists of 32 pits, 16 for each player. The game is played with seeds from the Ubusoro tree and each player has 32 seeds, meaning there are 64 seeds in total. A playerโ€™s territory is the two rows of pits closest to him. The seeds symbolize a herd of cows โ€œownedโ€ by the players. The goal of the game is to take enough seeds, or cows, from the other player, so that the opponent cannot move anymore and thus loses the game. The game fosters strategic thinking, mental agility and social interaction. It also conveys the idea that much can be accumulated from little when one plans properly and uses the right strategies, but that also the reverse is true.

At the end of April 2026, the Ludwigshafen University of Business and Social Sciences (HWG LU) welcomed a visit from its partner institution, the โ€œRuli Higher Institute of Healthโ€ in Rwanda. The focus was on expanding cooperation in nursing and midwifery, as well as exchanging ideas on teaching, clinical practice, and future collaborations.

Representatives from HWG LU, the Rhineland-Palatinateโ€“Rwanda Hospital Association, and graduates of the midwifery program discussed joint projects and toured the universityโ€™s skills and simulation center. Reciprocal visits by faculty and students between Ludwigshafen and Rwanda have been taking place since 2024.

A particular focus is the launch of a joint research project on birth cultures in Germany and Rwanda. Funded by the ASA University Program, midwives Leonie Hartwich and Charlotte Saal will each spend several months in both countries to gain intercultural experience and conduct on-site research.

The cooperation is to be further deepened in the future through additional exchange and research programs.

Last week the Igisoro Project implemented by Jumelage and the Rwanda Cultural Heritage Academy (Inteko yโ€™Umuco) started with two regional competitions. The first competition took place on Monday at the Rwanda Art Museum in Kigali and comprised partner schools from Kigali City, the Northern Province and the Eastern Province. The second competition took place on Wednesday at the Ethnographic Museum in Huye where students from partner schools from the Southern Province played against each other. Each school sent two students, one boy and one girl, to participate. On Wednesday, the Managing Director of the Partnership Association Layla Engeln, visiting from Mainz, and the Director of the Coordination Office Hanna Schรผhle attended the competition. They were able to witness the skills of the students and enjoyed playing Igisoro for the first time.

Last week, the Rwanda Club of the Gymnasium auf dem Asterstein in Koblenz hosted a presentation evening during which the students shared the impressions and experiences from their journey to Rwanda with an interested audience.
Together with four teachers, the members of the Rwanda Club spent two intensive weeks in Rwanda that left a lasting impression on everyone involved. Encounters filled with warmth and hospitality, shared lessons at the partner school, a football match, and many personal conversations quickly turned strangers into friends.

Particularly moving were the visits to a kindergarten as well as the engagement with the countryโ€™s history, especially the genocide, which led to emotional and reflective moments.
What remains is a connection that goes far beyond the journey itself and the realization of how valuable genuine encounters between people truly are.

For four years, Kallstadt has maintained ties with the District of Rutsiro in Rwanda, Rhineland-Palatinateโ€™s partner country. As part of the BLP conference organized by the GIZ in Berlin, Mayor Thomas Jaworek presented the partnership and subsequently accompanied the guests from Rwanda, Eugene Ndungutse and Manzi Bertrand, during their visit to the Palatinate region.

The program included, among other things, a visit to the Zein asparagus farm in Erpolzheim, the โ€œGemรผsegarten Pfalzโ€ vegetable garden project with Markus Keller, as well as a guided tour of the Pfรคlzerwald Associationโ€™s cabin at Lake Ungeheuersee. An exchange with the local rural womenโ€™s association during a joint asparagus cooking and dining event was also part of the visit.
