📢 INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY: ACCOUNTANT INTERN

Friends of Motherland Initiative “Ubumuntu” (FMI “Ubumuntu”) seeks a motivated, detail-oriented, and responsible Accountant Intern to support its Finance team in accurate record-keeping, transaction processing, financial management and reporting.

📌 RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Record and maintain accurate financial transactions and accounting records.
• Prepare payment vouchers and requests.
• Organize and update accounting documentation; ensure proper filing and safe custody.
• Prepare bank reconciliations and help resolve discrepancies.
• Manage petty cash under the Finance Manager’s supervision.
• Support budgeting, financial reporting, and related processes.
• Perform other finance and accounting duties assigned by the Finance Manager.

🎓 QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Financial management, Business Administration or a related field.

💼 EXPERIENCE:
Previous accounting or finance experience is an advantage. NGO, donor-funded project or development organization experience is an added advantage.

🧠 COMPETENCIES:
• Good knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and record-keeping.
• Ability to prepare and maintain accurate financial records and reports.
• Microsoft Office proficiency, particularly Excel.
• Experience using at least TWO recognized accounting software packages.
• Strong analytical and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
• Integrity, accountability, confidentiality, and professionalism. • Ability to work independently and within a team.

🌍 LANGUAGES:
Fluency in Kinyarwanda and English required; French is an added advantage.

HELPING CHILDREN UNDERSTAND AND PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS MOST

Through our Weekend and Holiday Coaching Program, children explored Beyond Success Lesson 3: “Priorities”,learning to manage time, organize responsibilities, make thoughtful choices, and focus on what matters most.

The session closed with recreation, social interaction, and modern dance, creating space for learning, creativity, and self-expression.

The program reaches 102 children, including 57 girls and 45 boys, supporting their holistic development.

FROM DROPPING OUT TO MOVING FORWARD

Dropping out of school does not have to mean the end of learning or opportunity.

Through community outreach and follow-up by FMI “Ubumuntu” under the LIFT Program, out-of-school children across the five LIFT-supported sectors in Gisagara District are being connected to Alternative Learning Pathways (ALP) through vocational training and apprenticeships.

They are gaining practical skills in tailoring, carpentry, welding, mechanics, hairdressing and construction, and learning both through training and hands-on experience.

For children who did not have the opportunity to complete their schools, these skills provide a pathway to employment, self-employment, and sustainable livelihoods while rebuilding their confidence and hope for the future.

👉Because leaving the classroom should never mean leaving opportunity behind.

FROM ACTIVITIES TO IMPACT: FOLLOWING THE JOURNEY OF CHANGE

Last week, FMI “Ubumuntu” staff and volunteers conducted a two-day field visit across all five LIFT Program sectors in Gisagara District, taking monitoring and learning directly to the communities we serve.

👉Follow-up with back-to-school children
👉Visits to young people undertaking vocational skills training
👉Engagement with community savings groups

At every stop, we listened, learned, and captured stories of change, looking beyond activities to understand how LIFT interventions are contributing to meaningful changes in people’s lives.

Every needs a direction, and every child deserves the support to move toward it.

Through our Weekend and Holiday Coaching Program, Yesterday, children supported by FMI “Ubumuntu” set their goals for the 2026–2027 school year from the grades they aim to achieve and areas they want to improve, to their future dreams and the actions they will take to reach them.

They also identified the support they need from parents, teachers, and FMI “Ubumuntu” along the way.

For us, success is more than good grades. It is about nurturing children with , , , and to build a better future.

KEEPING CHILDREN IN SCHOOL, PROTECTING THEIR FUTURE

For a child eager to learn, lacking a notebook, pen, or school uniform can become a real barrier to education. Removing that barrier can open the door to a brighter future.

Today, FMI “Ubumuntu”, in collaboration with school leadership, provided notebooks, pens, and school uniforms to 102 children supported by the organization, 59 girls and 43 boys from four schools in Nyanza and Kigembe Sectors: ES Kigembe, ES Higiro TSS, EP Higiro, and EP Rusongati.

More than providing school supplies, this initiative is about removing barriers to learning, preventing school dropouts, and helping children stay in school with confidence and hope.

FROM LEARNING TO LASTING CHANGE: EMPOWERING FRONTLINE ACTORS TO STRENGTHEN PATHWAYS OUT OF POVERTY

What does it take to help a family move out of poverty and build a sustainable future? It starts with skilled frontline actors who can listen, guide, connect, and walk alongside them.

Yesterday marked the closing of a three-day capacity-building training conducted by FMI “Ubumuntu” in partnership with Nyanza Sector. The training brought together Para Social Workers and Socio-Economic Development Officers (SEDOs), strengthening their ability to effectively accompany vulnerable households on their journey from poverty towards self-reliance and improved well-being.

Participants developed practical skills in household assessment, active listening and trust-building, adult learning principles, growth mindset, stress management, effective facilitation, purposeful household visits, goal-setting, and sustainable behaviour change. They also strengthened their ability to connect families with essential services, livelihood opportunities, and development programmes.

Through practical exercises and the Tree of Life approach, participants explored how to help families recognise their strengths, resources, support networks, and aspirations and use them as foundations for lasting change.

The bigger story begins after the training. Para Social Workers and SEDOs will now take these skills back into their communities, where they will continue walking alongside families, strengthening resilience, encouraging informed decisions, and supporting sustainable graduation from poverty.

We sincerely appreciate the leadership of Nyanza Sector, the Local Administrative Entities Development Agency (LODA), Southern Province Graduation Programme representatives, all facilitators and participants for their invaluable contributions throughout the training.
