From Individual Intervention to System-Level Practice: How Can ABA Support an Entire School Community?

What happens when ABA moves beyond individual student intervention and becomes part of the way an entire school supports learning, behavior, and social-emotional development?

In her practice-based presentation, Katrina Tsai (IBA Intern, Licensed Special Education Teacher and Licensed School Counselor, China) shares her experience implementing ABA frameworks in an international K–12 school in Shanghai.

Over one academic year, ABA strategies were implemented across multiple levels of the school system:

🔹 At Tier 1, teachers received training in the ABC model, behavioral functions, reinforcement, and self-management. A school-wide reinforcement system was also introduced.

🔹 At Tier 2, targeted interventions included social skills groups, self-management training, Check-In/Check-Out, and training for teaching assistants in DTT.

🔹 At Tier 3, students received individualized behavioral, social-emotional, and academic support based on functional assessment, individualized reinforcement systems, behavior intervention plans, and parent collaboration.
The results show what can happen when behavior support becomes a shared responsibility rather than the work of a single specialist:

📊 88% of teachers reported increased confidence in classroom management.

📊 70% of trained teaching assistants implemented DTT in their classrooms.

📊 90% of parents reported improvements in their children's academic and/or social behavior.
An important part of the model was also data-based decision making: student data, standardized assessments, and intervention outcomes were used to guide planning and adjust support.

The central message of the presentation is simple but powerful:

ABA is not just an intervention. It can become a framework for how schools support learning and behavior.

A new student enters your therapy room.
The case is challenging — but you know where to begin.

First: build rapport and cooperation.
Then: teach the child how to learn, gradually increasing participation in structured activities.

Over time, skills emerge. New programs are mastered. Progress during sessions is impressive.

A few years later, it is time for school.

But at home, parents are still helping with dressing, feeding, toileting, and daily routines. Free time is still spent arranging objects or engaging in repetitive activities.

Why does this happen?

Why do children sometimes acquire skills in therapy sessions but struggle to use them in everyday life?
And how can we design instruction so that skills become meaningful parts of daily routines?

Yan He (IBA, BCaBA, China) will address this question by presenting results from a 12-week study involving two preschool children with autism spectrum disorder.

The study focuses on Natural Environment Teaching (NET) — teaching through real-life contexts such as meals, play, household activities, and daily routines rather than isolated table-based exercises.

📌 Key findings:

✔ Increased independence at home and preschool
✔ Reduced reliance on adult prompts
✔ Better generalization of skills across settings
✔ More spontaneous initiation of everyday activities

The presentation will also explore NET alone versus NET combined with TEACCH — and why combining approaches may lead to more sustainable outcomes for children and families.

This session will be valuable for behavior analysts, educators, and early intervention professionals who want learning to extend beyond the therapy room and become part of a child’s real life.

Why nothing works out? Why should behavior analysts care about Theory of Mind?
Do behavior analysts really need to know about Theory of Mind – the ability to understand other people's thoughts, intentions, beliefs, and desires?
After all, behavior analysis explains behavior through environmental variables rather than hypothetical mental states.
This question was raised by Dr. Hank Schlinger in his keynote presentation at last year's conference, prompting many behavior analysts to reconsider their assumptions. The answer has important implications for how we understand the social challenges experienced by autistic individuals and how we design effective interventions.
At the 12th International Conference "Applied Behavior Analysis: Theory and Practice", Анастасия Козорез Anastasia Kozorez, IBA and psychologist, will present "Why Should Behavior Analysts Care About Theory of Mind? False Belief or Deictic Frame"
In this presentation, she will examine Theory of Mind from two complementary perspectives: through the lens of Verbal Behavior and Relational Frame Theory (RFT), as well as through findings from contemporary cognitive psychology.
📚 The presentation will review both classic and recent research and discuss how an understanding of Theory of Mind can inform evidence-based intervention for autistic children.

🔹 How false-belief tasks work and what they tell us about child development.
🔹 Why infants and great apes appear to possess Theory of Mind despite having limited or no complex verbal repertoires.
