Today, we are back with Leica’s story — and, finally, with some good news. ❤️
We rescued Leica in April 2025, when we found her in pain, heartbroken and abandoned in a kennel at the Public Shelter.
She had escaped from a yard and was then hit by a car. Her left front leg was fractured.
That is how this gentle and beautiful soul survived from December 2024, when she was brought in from the streets, until that day in April 2025, when we stood in front of her kennel and were horrified by the pain we could see in her eyes.
Once upon a time, Leica had been an adorable puppy, abandoned at the shelter. She was adopted, but after she was hit by a car, her owner no longer wanted her back.
Four months of pain. Four months during which people at the shelter, visitors — no one — showed her mercy. No one seemed to care about her suffering.
The day we rescued her, we went straight to a veterinary orthopedic clinic. After taking X-rays, we were told that the fracture was too old and that the only solution was to amputate her leg.
It was a heartbreaking decision, especially because we felt that Leica would not be able to move easily on three legs.
And that is when the fight began.
Phone calls. Second opinions. Searching. Hoping.
Finally, we found a veterinary clinic in Bucharest that had the possibility of saving her leg through a difficult surgical procedure.
On the morning of May 1st, 2025, we left for Bucharest with our hearts full of hope.
The surgery was a success.
The bone was practically broken again, cleaned and repaired, stabilized with an intramedullary pin and a metal plate.
Everyone was happy and confident that, within a month or two at most, we would return for the second surgery, when the pin and metal plate would be removed.
And finally, our girl would be able to have a normal life.
To walk.
To run.
To be happy.
Sadly, things did not go according to plan.
Leica’s bone was healing very slowly, with callus formation taking much longer than expected.
Months followed — medication, restrictions, veterinary visits and X-rays, waiting and hoping.
And today, we once again left home with our hearts tight, anxious to see how her bone had progressed.
As always, Leica happily jumped into the car, excited because she thought she was going on another little adventure with us.
After today’s X-ray, the decision was made to remove the intramedullary pin first.
On Thursday, Leica will undergo surgery.
So we are asking you, from the bottom of our hearts, to send her your good thoughts, your prayers, your positive energy. ❤️
