Don't miss this fascinating exhibition if you're in Bucharest this summer!

"The exhibition features original videotaped recordings of interrogations of four detainees investigated by the secret police, shown on grainy, wall-mounted monitors in the museum’s central hall. All were recorded in 1989 by the Criminal Investigations Directorate of the Securitate."

An exhibition in Romania’s capital highlights the harsh reality of interrogations by the country's communist-era secret police

🚪 What story is waiting behind this door?

In our latest ARCS Journal community project, we're inviting readers and writers to create a flash fiction piece inspired by Gate of Blossoms, a painting by Romanian artist Liliana Sâmbotin.

If you're in the Seattle area, even better: the painting is currently on display at Macrina Bakery in Belltown through the end of July. Spend a few minutes with it. Look closely. Let your imagination wander.

Who planted the blossoms? Where does the door lead? What is hidden behind it? Or perhaps what is trying to get out?

Then write your story and send it to [email protected].

Selected submissions will be published together in a future ARCS Journal collection, just as we previously did with "Not Everyone Sees the Same Cat", where one painting inspired many very different stories.

and join us.
We can't wait to see where this door leads. 🌸📖

Returning to Eminescu

Today we remember Mihai Eminescu, a poet who continues to occupy a unique place in Romanian culture.

His poems ask questions that never quite disappear: What is love? What is time? What do we do with longing, memory, solitude, and the feeling that reality is somehow larger than what we can see?

Every generation discovers a different Eminescu. The romantic dreamer. The philosopher. The observer of nature. The restless seeker.

Today, we invite you to revisit a poem you have not read in years. You may find that it has changed. Or perhaps you have.

And if you are wondering where to begin, try Sara pe deal. You may discover why some poems refuse to stay on the page.

🍦How does the summer light feel? Is it golden and nostalgic? Is it blindingly bright? Does it linger on sticky fingers after a melted ice cream? As you soak in the beauty, energy and memories along the way this season, let your photographs speak what words cannot.

ARCS is delighted to invite local and national photographers to participate in a group exhibition, celebrating the joy of capturing sun-kissed moments! This is the first in our new series, Through your Eyes.

🖼️ We will print the images for a group show at Gallery 4500 in Seattle and each one will be made available for purchase. A portion of the proceeds will go to the photographers. More details to come when registration opens in August.

☀️In the meantime, start getting inspired and take photographs you feel are honest representations of the many layers of summer.

Dates:
August 1-20: Submissions open
September 7: The photography exhibition opens at Gallery 4500 in Seattle
September 12: Opening reception

Upcoming photo walks for teens!
We are happy to offer opportunities for teens interested in photography to create images for the group show and/or to submit to ARCS Journal!

🧶 We often talk about preserving culture.

But culture is not a museum artifact. It is something we keep making together.

In our latest ARCS Journal piece, we explore the idea of community as a living tapestry. Woven from books, art, stories, and the connections between people.
It is a reflection on the Community Library, Artist Network, and Journal, and on the work of building cultural continuity across generations and across oceans.

🎭 Caragiale Never Seems to Grow Old.

This week we celebrate Romania's great playwright, Ion Luca Caragiale, whose work continues to make us laugh, recognize ourselves in his characters, and wonder how much has really changed over the past 140 years.

If you'd like to discover one of his most famous plays, A Lost Letter (O scrisoare pierdută), TVR Cultural has made available on YouTube a recording of Liviu Ciulei's landmark 1982 production at the Bulandra Theatre.

Featuring Victor Rebengiuc, Mariana Mihuț, Dem Rădulescu, Octavian Cotescu, Mircea Diaconu, Ștefan Bănică, and Fory Etterle, this production is considered a classic of Romanian theater.

A Lost Letter is a sharp political satire about elections, ambition, corruption, and a misplaced love letter that throws an entire town into chaos. Written in 1884, it remains surprisingly relevant today.

Discuția de astăzi cu autoarea Doina Ruști.
Doina a fost caldă.
Doina a fost directă.
Doina a râs.

Today's discussion with author Doina Ruști.
Doina was warm.
Doina was direct.
Doina laughed.
Doina became passionate when she felt misunderstood.
It felt less like a literary event and more like a conversation among friends.

We talked about Ferenike, about writing, about characters, and about the stories that stay with us long after the book was closed.

This Saturday, June 6, members of the ARCS Book Club will have the opportunity to discuss *Ferenike* with its author, acclaimed Romanian novelist Doina Ruști.

Ahead of our meeting, we invite you to read a new interview published in the ARCS Journal. In conversation with Ileana Marin, Doina Ruști reflects on Balkanism, femininity, memory, the demons of history, and the ideas that shape her fiction.

If you are reading *Ferenike* or simply interested in contemporary Romanian literature, this is a wonderful introduction to one of Romania's most distinctive literary voices.

We are delighted to welcome Anca Moldoveanu to the ARCS Artist Network and to share her remarkable work with our community.

Working with driftwood shaped by water, weather, and time, Anca transforms overlooked pieces of wood into sculptures that reveal unexpected forms, characters, and stories.

Her work invites us to look more carefully at the world around us and the possibilities hidden in things we might otherwise pass by.
