🌍 Thought everyone went back to school in September? Think again! 🎒✨

The member schools of the International Schools Association are spread across the globe, and their academic calendars vary enormously! Local climates, seasons and even cultural traditions shape the rhythm of the classroom.

Here are a few fascinating global facts from across our school network:

🌸 Spring starts in Japan: Rather than September, schools kick off on 1st April, coinciding with the new financial year and the blooming of the cherry blossoms (sakura).

☀️ Summer in the Southern Hemisphere: At our member schools in Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, the new school year starts between February and March as they bid farewell to their summer holidays.

📚 A national celebration: In Russia and across Eastern Europe, 1st September marks 'Knowledge Day'—a longstanding tradition where pupils turn up in their finest clothes carrying flowers for their teachers.

🌡️ Weathering the elements: In the Philippines and the Maldives, term dates are tailored to avoid extreme heatwaves, monsoons and typhoons.

75 years of uniting the world through education and humanism ✨

There are anniversaries that do not simply commemorate the past, but forcefully illuminate the future.
As part of the 75th Anniversary celebrations of the International Schools Association (ISA), we have experienced a historic milestone that will be forever etched into our institutional memory.

With immense pride, the prestigious
ISA Humanism Awards 2026 have been presented—an accolade presided over by Narin Stassis (Chair of the Board of Directors at ISA) to recognition of two global icons who are truly transforming the world:

🏅 Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (Director-General of the WTO) | Honoured for her global leadership, resilience and steadfast commitment to equitable trade that always puts people first. Ngozi Okonjo iweala

🏅 Tatsuya Yoshioka (Founder of Peace Boat (NGO) ) | Honoured for his exceptional career promoting peace, human rights and global sustainability.

Seeing the pedagogical heritage of ISA converge on the stage with the impact of these laureates inspires us to continue cultivating classrooms without borders, where critical thinking and solidarity mean everything.

Our heartfelt thanks to the Board of Directors for leading this historic encounter, and warmest congratulations to the recipients. Your example is the greatest lesson we can offer to future generations!

75 years leading the future of global education

Yesterday, we experienced an unforgettable day for education. To mark our 75th anniversary, the International Schools Association (ISA) hosted a strategic meeting that brought together key leaders and representatives from across the international educational landscape.

The event featured the participation of our entire Board, reaffirming our institution's commitment during this milestone year. We were also joined by leading figures from the sector to debate and chart the future course of education:

Our thoughts are with Venezuela and Japan 🖤

Following the recent earthquakes, we wish to extend our deepest solidarity and support.

Our hearts go out to everyone affected in Venezuela. We send our utmost strength and hope to the Venezuelan families during this challenging time of reconstruction.

At the same time, we send our warmest thoughts to Japan. We are deeply relieved to learn that, fortunately, no casualties have been reported following the major earthquake.

Now more than ever, empathy and mutual support unite us all.

Form tutors are having careers conversations every week.

Nobody trained them for it.
Nobody gave them a framework.
Nobody told the career counsellor either.

So two people are doing overlapping work, with no shared language, and students are getting inconsistent support, or none at all.

That's not a people problem. It's a structure problem.
