Peace Action Training and Research Institute of Romania (PATRIR)

Peace Action Training and Research Institute of Romania (PATRIR) PATRIR is the joint effort of hard working people believing in its values. It is essential, necessary and achievable.

Dedicated to the promotion and practice of peacebuilding and prevention of armed conflict in partnership with communities, organisations, governments and agencies worldwide. The Peace Action, Training and Research Institute of Romania (PATRIR) was founded in 2001 as a non-governmental, non-profit, politically independent organization in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The institute has as basic principles n

on-violence, conflict transformation, the promotion of human rights through information and awareness raising by solutions oriented, social, political and economic analysis. PATRIR was created as a result of numerous dialogues with representatives from various social sectors, as a response to the need of change within the local communities. In its strive to support the local communities in their development and meeting everyday challenges, the Institute lays its activity on to four pillars: action, training, research, advocacy and awareness raising. It joins together diagnosis, necessary to identify problems and challenges with prognosis and therapy, disseminating information and making sure that the promoted message reaches across communities. These people coordinate, work or volunteer for the existing departments and programmes, or in the administrative division of the Institute. While the impacts and effects of war and armed conflicts are enough to make even the most courageous lose hope and question whether there is indeed anything we can do to make the world a better place, there is another, quieter and perhaps more powerful story unfolding; one less visible to the world's television cameras and photographers. It is the story of increasing numbers of individuals in their thousands and tens of thousands and organisations on all continents working in peacebuilding; of a field becoming ever more collaborative, experienced and capable; of governments and citizens increasingly recognizing that to overcome war and violence we need to commit the intelligence and responsibility to invest in peacebuilding and developing our capacities to handle conflicts effectively. Peacebuilding is not a 'soft' field, an abstract field, or an idealistic way of dealing with violent conflict any more than medicine is soft, abstract or idealistic as a way of dealing with sickness and disease. PATRIR is one of many authors and contributors to this story. Through patience, dedication, hard work, and a commitment to professionalism and passion, the Institute is working to enable both immediate results and long-term contributions to building an architecture, culture, and practice of peacebuilding. It is working with practitioners, policy makers and the public to deepen our knowledge, skills and understanding, and to make visible an important choice. The choice of whether we continue policies and practices which escalate violence, insecurity and instability for billions of people world-wide, or whether we find alternatives, and commit our social, economic, political, scientific, cultural and human resources and capacities to transforming conflicts by peaceful, determined means. That choice of overcoming all forms of structural, cultural and direct violence is up to us; every single one of us.

Today, 21 September, on the International Day of Peace, we stand united for a world free of violence, hatred, and division.

Peace is not just a dream, it's a daily commitment. Behind every conflict there are children, families, and communities longing for peace. Today, we should honour those living in conflict areas and those working for peace in the most difficult conditions.

Let’s choose peace - in our words, our actions, and our hearts.

12/09/2025

Peace isn’t just a dream - it’s a choice we make every day.
Now it’s time to act. Speak up against injustice. Practice kindness. Support those working for a better tomorrow.

Every step you take sends ripples of hope into the world.

We thank Laura Pistarini for joining our project.

Peace grows stronger when we stand together. By listening to one another, sharing resources, and celebrating our differences, we weave a fabric of trust that can’t be torn.

Together, we can create communities where everyone feels safe and valued. What can you do to feel more at peace?

We thank Sergiu Ursa for joining our project.

Before we can share peace with the world, we must find it within ourselves. Inner peace comes from self-reflection, gratitude, and letting go of the weight we cannot carry.

Peace inside you becomes peace around you.

We thank Robert Konoplia for joining our project.

If we want peace to grow, we must learn it, teach it, and live it. Peace education helps us understand each other and resolve conflicts without harm. Every conversation, classroom, and community event can be a lesson in understanding.

Watch the video and discover we can preserve peace.

We thank Alexandru Divile for joining our project.

Peace begins with what we hold inside - our values and our hope for a better tomorrow.

Today, take a moment to ask yourself: What values do I want to live by? What gives me hope?

We invite you to watch this short video and let it remind you: peace is possible, and it starts with us.

We thank Anna Shevchenko for joining our project.

Last week in Bad Bevensen, Germany, the youth taking part in the Living Diversity training had the opportunity to discover the NewGen project and its inspiring Peace Portraits. Alongside this, they explored themes of conflict and peacebuilding, while also reflecting on their own understandings and experiences of peace.

This activity was carried out in the context of the NewGen project - A New Generation wakes up to war: Reducing militarization, tensions and prejudices. This is the result of a cooperation between four organizations working in the field of peace, mediation and social justice: Peace Education Institute - RKI (Finland), Peace Action, Training and Research Institute of Romania - PATRIR, Institute for Social Safety - IBS (Poland), and Berlin Center for Integrative Mediation - CSSP (Germany). The project is funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.
