The United States just released its 2026 National Defense Strategy (NDS), which implements the " " vision established in the December 2025 National Security Strategy ( ).
The strategy marks a fundamental shift toward , , and a prioritized focus on the Western Hemisphere.
Core Strategic Priorities
Homeland Defense & Border Security: For the first time in decades, the primary concern of the United States Department of War is the security of the U.S. homeland and the Western Hemisphere, surpassing the threat from China. This includes countering mass migration and drug trafficking.
The "Donroe Doctrine": The strategy reasserts the Monroe Doctrine to ensure absolute U.S. primacy in the Western Hemisphere, specifically targeting the influence of and in the region.
Deterring China "Through Strength": While still a major competitor, is no longer labeled the "pacing challenge." The U.S. seeks to deter aggression in the Indo-Pacific while avoiding direct confrontation or regime change.
Burden-Sharing with Allies: The strategy demands that allies, particularly in and , take "primary responsibility" for their own conventional defense. U.S. support will be "more limited" and transactional.
Industrial "Supercharging": A "once-in-a-century" revitalization of the U.S. is planned to ensure the U.S. remains the world's premier arsenal and to reduce dependence on foreign supply chains.

The US Army recently signed an agreement with the United Kingdom establishing ground rules for sharing intelligence on drone and counter-drone operations!
The US Army and vendors from the US and allied nations hosted (November 2025) a competition, dubbed Flytrap 4.5, to counter simulated threats from Group 1-3 (small- to medium-sized) drones operating in NATO airspace.

The Army secretary said the “end state” of such arrangements would make the US and its allies "stronger" in a future conflict where they would have to fight together.

What Romania needs is an ecosystem driven not by inherited structures, but by competence, technology, and strategy. The time has come to stop looking backwards, trying to salvage – or revitalise – structures that were never designed to meet today’s challenges. The Romanian government must show the vision and political courage to build something new, something worthy of Romania’s strategic location and Euro Atlantic commitments.”
