Prepositions in Romanian
Prepositions are words that are placed before nouns, pronouns, or noun phrases to show their relationship to other words in the sentence. These relationships can include location, time, direction, reason, possession, and more.
In Romanian, prepositions usually come before the noun they refer to.
Common Types of Prepositions in Romanian:
Prepositions of Place (Prepoziții de loc): These prepositions indicate the location of something or someone in relation to another thing or person.
pe: on (horizontal surface)
- Example: Cartea este pe masă. (The book is on the table.)
în: in, inside
- Example: Copiii sunt în casă. (The children are in the house.)
la: at (near), to (location)
- Example: Merg la școală. (I am going to school.)
sub: under, below
- Example: Pisica este sub scaun. (The cat is under the chair.)
peste: over (without contact), across
- Example: Pasărea zboară peste copac. (The bird is flying over the tree.)
lângă: next to, beside
- Example: Stau lângă tine. (I am sitting next to you.)
departe de: far from
- Example: Casa mea este departe de oraș. (My house is far from the city.)
aproape de: close to, near - Example: Magazinul este aproape de casă. (The store is close to the house.)
între: between (two things)
- Example: Mingea este între cutii. (The ball is between the boxes.)
printre: among, through
- Example: Merg printre oameni. (I am walking among people.)
dinaintea: in front of
- Example: Mașina este dinaintea casei. (The car is in front of the house.)
înapoia: behind
- Example: Grădina este înapoia casei. (The garden is behind the house.)
