🌈🐋To see nature’s true colors, sometimes you just have to change the light🐋🌈

🦎Have you ever wondered why we picked the Namib sand gecko (Pachydactylus rangei) as our icon for the Q***r Nature Photography Awards 2026?

🌗By day, these tiny desert-dwellers blend seamlessly into the sand. But under the moonlight, a hidden world is illuminated. They absorb the faint blue light of the moon and project it back into the pitch-black darkness as a vibrant, neon-green glow!❇️

🕸️🌈This spectacular inner light isn’t a performance reserved for a strict, predictable binary. Every single individual glows. In a vast, barren desert, this brilliant neon signal acts as a community beacon—a biological signature that says: “I am here, you are not alone, and we belong to the same pack.”

🌕The Q***r Nature Photography Awards want to shine a light on the parts of the natural world that are unseen, misunderstood, or ignored. We invite (wildlife) photographers from all over the globe to show us how biodiversity challenges conventional norms and rewrites the rules.

Bring your unique perspective and help us change the light. Showing us the vibrant intersection of q***rness and biodiversity!

The “Invisible” Rainbows? 🏳️‍🌈🐳🦂

Probably you have heard by now that same-sex behaviour has been officially recorded in over 1,500 species. From penguins to primates, the animal kingdom is pretty q***r.

But today, we’re looking at some of the Wallflowers. These three species currently have no registered scientific evidence of same-sex behaviour. Is it because they don’t do it? Or because no one has wanted to capture this behaviour before?

1. The Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus)

The biggest fish in the sea is also one of the most mysterious. We rarely see them mate at all, let alone witness their social nuances. Are they the ultimate deep-sea introverts?

2. Scorpions (Scorpiones)

While many insects and arachnids are known for diverse mating habits, scorpions are famous for their “dance” (the promenade à deux). So far, science has only clocked this between male-female pairs. But in the dark of the desert, who knows?

3. The Narwhal (Monodon monoceros)

The “Unicorn of the Sea.” Living under thick Arctic ice makes them nearly impossible to study year-round. While they are social and touchy-feely with their tusks, a confirmed “Rainbow Narwhal” moment has yet to be captured by science.

Help us uncover the world’s rainbow of diversity. This is your shot at representing the natural world 📸

Of course we could have missed some research, please let us know if that’s the case!

Looking for a way to shake up the classroom? 🧪✨

One of our favorite lessons in our recent high school pilot, “The World Wonders -at Diversity,” challenges students to look at science through a new lens. We dive into the biases that have historically existed in research/biology and then hand the mic (and the research tools) to the students.

Their mission? Pick a species and uncover the truth about:
🏳️‍🌈 Same-sex behaviors
⚧️ Gender fluidity
🐧 Rainbow families in the animal kingdom

By exploring Q***r Nature—the scientific diversity of sexuality, gender, and family forms in the wild—students learn that diversity isn’t just a human concept; it’s a fundamental part of the world around us. It’s all about fostering empathy, curiosity, and the critical thinking skills needed to navigate today’s world. 🌍
