How Complexity Science is Redefining Forest Therapy and Human Health

The pristine, UNESCO-protected ancient beech forests of Strâmbu-Băiuț, Maramureș, recently served as the backdrop for a profound convergence of ecology, medicine, and advanced physics. On May 29–30, 2026, the second edition of the International Symposium on Forest Therapy (Simpozionul Internațional de Silvoterapie) brought together leading international researchers, foresters, and medical balneologists under the guiding motto: “Nature heals, and health begins in the forest.”

Organized by Asociația Multiculturală Johannes Banfi Hunyades in partnership with WWF Romania and supported by Băiuț Town Hall, the symposium aimed to ground the empirical, ancient practices of “forest bathing” (Shinrin-yoku) into concrete scientific frameworks.

Central to this mission were the back-to-back presentations delivered by the delegation from the Center for Complexity Studies (CSC), which introduced an entirely new, non-linear paradigm for understanding human healing and planetary ecology.

Can we mathematically prove how nature heals?
At the International Symposium on Forest Therapy, the CSC team redefined health.

Drd. Emil Canciu introduced DiMuSe, a geophysical-inspired algorithm proving that healing sounds and nature share an objective, structural fingerprint. Right after, Prof. Dr. Florin Munteanu scaled this to Gaia - The Living Planet perspective, framing forests as "Orthosensors"—living networks that actively preserve planetary coherence.

Together, they redefine health as multi-level phase synchronization, where nature acts as our ultimate coherence anchor.

At the interdisciplinary conference “AI: Beyond Humanity,” held on 7-8 May 2026 at the Romanian Academy, a perspective for the future of science was presented by Dr. Florin Munteanu, PhD, Founder of the Center for Complexity Studies. His presentation marked a departure from traditional scientific inquiry, proposing an epistemic shift from a force-centered paradigm to a coherence-oriented perspective.

Following the successful dialogues initiated at the 23rd International Conference on Smart Technologies & Education (STE 2026), a working meeting took place between the Laboratory of Forest Products (Faculty of Silviculture and Forest Engineering, Transilvania University of Brașov) and the team from the Centre for Complex Studies (CSC).

This inaugural meeting aimed at exploring the intersections of wood, trees, and forests through a multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary lens. By shifting the focus from simple resource exploitation to the complexity of phenomena, the two teams are charting a course for a long-term collaborative calendar.

We thank our host Mariana Domnica Stanciu for facilitating the meeting !

On March 27, 2026, the 5th Edition of the International Scientific Conference, “Emerging and Disruptive Technologies’ Impact on Global Security” (EDT 2026), convened in Sibiu. As a partner of the event, the Academy of Romanian Scientists (AOSR) highlighted the participation of distinguished experts addressing the complex security challenges of the modern era.

Among the invited speakers, Dr. Ing. Florin Munteanu—Founder of the Center for Complexity Studies and Full Member of the AOSR— presented in front of the plenary session the problem of “Good Governance Between Organization and Emergence: Rethinking Governance in the Age of Complexity”.

Dr. Munteanu’s presentation challenged traditional views of leadership, asserting that “Governance is not a property of position, but an emergent function of the level of understanding”. He argued that while roles like CEOs, governors, and educators remain essential, the conceptual framework defining them must evolve. CCS @ the Science and Technology in Education Conference - 2026 Highlights

The Center for Complexity Studies group participated at STE 2026 with an innovative setup, a Scientific Jam Session, inspired by music improvisation, which moved beyond traditional academic formats to foster an encounter between engineering, biology, physics, computation, and epistemology.

The Jam Session brought together researchers from diverse fields around the Atlas of Conceptual Nodes, a framework intended to catalyse transdisciplinary reflection and exploratory dialogue.

The exhibition space—designed as a visual landscape of ideas—
allowed participants to navigate freely among conceptual nodes,
at one's pace or accompanied by one of the CCS members present at the conference.

STE 2026 Post-Event Reflections : Transilvania University of Brașov hosted between March 11 - 13, the 23rd International Conference on Smart Technologies & Education (STE) in collaboration with the Edunet World Association (EWA) and the International Education Network (EduNet).

The city—already highly attractive due to its rich cultural and historical landscape— became even more vibrant with the presence of academics and researchers eager to exchange ideas and share scientific experience.

Our contribution to the conference, the Scientific Jam Session, introduced an original format designed to stimulate creative and transdisciplinary scientific thinking within the academic environment.

The Scientific Jam Session: An Invitation to Dialogue during the Smart Technologies & Education (STE 2026) conference.

Paradigm shifts often emerge from shared minds, from the "spark" of new questions found in the flow of informal conversation.

The Center for Complexity Studies is pleased to announce a dedicated workshop organized this Wednesday, March 11, in the Aula of Universitatea TRANSILVANIA din Brasov within the framework of the Smart Technologies & Education (STE 2026) conference. We invite all conference participants to join us in exploring this contemporary exercise in scientific maieutics.

Moving away from traditional academic monologues, the Scientific Jam Session treats inquiry as a fluid encounter akin to musical improvisation. By centering the dialogue on radical questions, we aim to:

- Foster intuition through cognitive interference.

- Cultivate transdisciplinary thinking among researchers.

- Bridge the gap between established knowledge and emerging insights.

Join us to explore a new architecture of discovery. Full details and session schedule:

The Center for Complexity Studies (CCS) is proud to announce the Scientific Jam Session, a pioneering event held as a specialized section within the 23rd International Conference on Smart Technologies & Education (STE 2026). Scheduled from March 11–13,
