Participating in the « Marginalized Youth Against Disinformation » project in Berlin was an experience I didn’t know I needed—both for my mind and my heart.
One of my favorite moments was our fieldwork at the Berlin Wall. My group was tasked with interviewing people passing by this iconic spot. I honestly expected people to be busy or indifferent, but I was so wrong. Whether they were locals or tourists, people stopped. They wanted to talk. It was surprising and inspiring to see how conscious people actually are about the history of this place, the dangers of propaganda, and the fight against fake news today. It gave me hope to realize that people are much more aware of these problematics than I thought.
But this trip was also personal. I actually had an accident while I was there, and that’s when the true spirit of this exchange shined through. I was in a tough spot, but I found unexpected kindness in this group of strangers who quickly became friends. The way everyone helped me out and supported me was amazing.
I came to Berlin to learn about critical thinking, but I left learning just as much about myself and the power of human connection. Thank you to the organizers and my team for the knowledge, the laughs, and for being there when I needed it most.
