This Earth Day, we highlight the Earthna Prize community, showcasing how traditional knowledge and cultural heritage, shaped over generations, can help address today’s sustainability challenges. Our inaugural winners, Blue Ventures, The Farmer Tantoh Foundation, Wuasikamas Ëconeêrã, and Blooming World International, are leveraging traditional knowledge and cultural heritage to tackle key challenges, from water and food security to protecting marine and coastal ecosystems, as well as promoting peace and economic growth. في يوم الأرض، نسلّط الضوء على جائزة إرثنا، ونستعرض كيف يمكن للمعرفة التقليدية والموروث الثقافي، المتوارث عبر الأجيال، أن يسهما في مواجهة تحديات الاستدامة المعاصرة.

Earthna, in collaboration with Hamad Bin Khalifa University, launched ‘Semiotics of Nature: Recharging Nature with Meaning for Environmental Ethics and Action’, a new publication exploring the relationship between humanity and nature through an Islamic ethical and spiritual lens.

Authored by Dr. Recep Şentürk (HBKU), with a foreword by Dr. Gonzalo Castro de la Mata, Earthna, the publication was launched during a dedicated session that brought together experts, practitioners, and institutional leaders. The session featured welcome remarks by Dr. Gonzalo Castro de la Mata, reflections from Dr. Recep Şentürk, and a panel discussion moderated by Ruba Hinnawi and featuring Mutaz al-Khatib and Osman Umarji where they highlighted how Islamic values can inspire nature protection, responsible consumption, and sustainable development, while pointing to pathways for turning values into action.

أطلق إرثنا، بالتعاون مع جامعة حمد بن خليفة، كتاب دلائل الطبيعة: إحياء معنى الطبيعة نحو أخلاقيات بيئية تطبيقية وهو إصدار جديد يستكشف العلاقة بين الإنسان والطبيعة من منظور أخلاقي وروحي مستند إلى القيم الإسلامية.

الكتاب من تأليف الدكتور رجب شنتورك، جامعة حمد بن خليفة، وبمقدمة للدكتور غونزالو كاسترو دي لا ماتا (إرثنا). وقد أُطلق خلال جلسة جمعت نخبة من الخبراء والمهتمين.

تضمنت الجلسة كلمة افتتاحية للدكتور غونزالو كاسترو دي لا ماتا، ومداخلة للدكتور رجب شنتورك، إضافة إلى جلسة نقاشية أدارتها ربى حناوي، بمشاركة الدكتور معتز الخطيب، والدكتور وعثمان عمرجي تناولت كيف يمكن للقيم الإسلامية أن تسهم في تعزيز حماية الطبيعة، وترسيخ أنماط استهلاك مسؤولة، ودعم مسارات التنمية المستدامة، مع التركيز على تحويل القيم إلى ممارسات عملية.

A high-level reception was hosted on January 7 at Al Khater House in Education City to mark the first year of partnership between Qatar Foundation’s Earthna and The King’s Foundation. Attended by Her Excellency Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, the gathering brought together leaders from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the Ministry of Social Development and Family, and the Qatar Fund for Development, alongside dignitaries and practitioners.

The reception’s highlights included updates on the two-year Earthna-The King’s Foundation partnership supporting four heritage-driven initiatives in India, Guyana, Sierra Leone, and Zanzibar. Local initiatives, including the Rihla and Herfah programs, demonstrated how sustainability and environmental stewardship are embedded in experiential learning rooted in culture, heritage, Islamic values, and the preservation of Arab and Islamic craftsmanship.

أقيم حفل استقبال رفيع المستوى في 7 يناير في بيت الخاطر بالمدينة التعليمية، احتفاءً بمرور عام على الشراكة بين إرثنا – مركز لمستقبل مستدام التابع لمؤسسة قطر، ومؤسسة الملك.

وشهد الحفل حضور سعادة الشيخة هند بنت حمد آل ثاني، نائب رئيس مجلس إدارة مؤسسة قطر، إلى جانب قيادات من وزارة البيئة والتغير المناخي، ووزارة التنمية الاجتماعية والأسرة، وصندوق قطر للتنمية، بالإضافة إلى عدد من أصحاب السعادة والخبراء والممارسين في مجال الاستدامة.

وتضمّن الحفل استعراضًا لأبرز مستجدات الشراكة الممتدة لعامين بين إرثنا ومؤسسة الملك، والتي تدعم أربع مبادرات مستندة إلى التراث في كل من الهند، وغيانا، وسيراليون، وزنجبار. كما سلّط الضوء على مبادرات محلية، من بينها برنامجا “رحلة” و”حرفة”، اللذان يبرزان كيفية ترسيخ مفاهيم الاستدامة والحفاظ على البيئة من خلال تجارب تعليمية تطبيقية قائمة على الثقافة والتراث والقيم الإسلامية، وصون الحِرَف العربية والإسلامية.

This week, Earthna and the UN-Habitat Regional Office for Arab States signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the Arab Ministerial Forum on Housing and Urban Development in Doha, establishing a strategic partnership to address sustainability challenges facing hot and arid regions.

The agreement covers collaboration across several key priorities, including mangrove restoration, food security, air quality, and urban sustainability. Activities will include developing best-practice guides, thematic knowledge hubs, and co-developed research projects. It also contains provisions for UN-Habitat’s participation in the Arid Cities Network (ACN), Earthna’s global platform dedicated to addressing the unique sustainability and resilience needs of cities in hot and dry environments.

‎شهد هذا الأسبوع توقيع مذكرة تفاهم بين مركز “إرثنا” والمكتب الإقليمي لبرنامج الأمم المتحدة للمستوطنات البشرية للدول العربية، وذلك على هامش المنتدى الوزاري العربي للإسكان والتنمية الحضرية المستدامة الذي عُقد في الدوحة. وتهدف المذكرة إلى إرساء شراكة استراتيجية لمعالجة تحديات الاستدامة التي تواجه المناطق الحارة والجافة

وتنص الاتفاقية على التعاون في عدد من الأولويات المحورية، من بينها استعادة غابات القرم (المانغروف)، وتعزيز الأمن الغذائي، وتحسين جودة الهواء، ودعم الاستدامة الحضرية. ويشمل ذلك إعداد أدلة لأفضل الممارسات، وإنشاء منصات معرفية متخصصة، وتطوير مشاريع بحثية مشتركة. كما تتضمن المذكرة مشاركة برنامج الأمم المتحدة للمستوطنات البشرية في شبكة المدن القاحلة، وهي المنصة العالمية التي أطلقها مركز “إرثنا” لتلبية احتياجات المدن الواقعة في البيئات الحارة والجافة في مجالي الاستدامة وبناء القدرة على الصمود

Earthna, in collaboration with Msheireb Museums and the German Embassy Doha, hosted the 2025 Doha Climate Talks at Bin Jelmood House on December 11. This year’s edition explored the role of sustainable finance in supporting long-term development and economic resilience.

The session, titled “Driving Sustainable Finance: Collaborative Insights from Qatari and German Experts,” brought together policymakers, financial institutions, and sustainability leaders to examine how innovation, practical tools, and cross-sector collaboration can better equip financial systems to support sustainability priorities.

Speakers also explored opportunities for cooperation between Qatar and Germany, drawing on their complementary strengths in finance, innovation, and policy development.

“Qatar and Germany share a strong interest in advancing financial frameworks that support sustainable development and long-term value creation. I see real progress in our financial systems, rewarding sustainable performance, not only reporting it.”

استضاف مركز “إرثنا”، بالتعاون مع متاحف مشيرب والسفارة الألمانية في الدوحة، محادثات الدوحة حول المناخ 2025 في بيت بن جلمود يوم 11 ديسمبر. وركّزت نسخة هذا العام على دور التمويل في دعم التنمية المستدامة.

وجمعت الجلسة، التي عُقدت تحت عنوان “دفع التمويل المستدام: رؤى تعاونية من خبراء قطريين وألمان”، صنّاع سياسات وممثلين عن مؤسسات مالية وقادة في مجال الاستدامة، لمناقشة سُبل توظيف الابتكار والأدوات العملية والتعاون متعدد القطاعات لتمكين الأنظمة المالية من الإسهام بفاعلية في تحقيق أولويات الاستدامة.

كما تناول المتحدثون فرص توسيع آفاق التعاون بين قطر وألمانيا، مستندين إلى ما يمتلكه الجانبان من مكامن قوة في مجالات التمويل والابتكار وصياغة السياسات.

وفي هذا السياق، قال الشيخ الدكتور سعود آل ثاني: “تتقاسم قطر وألمانيا اهتمامًا راسخًا بتطوير أطر مالية تدعم التنمية المستدامة وتحقق قيمة مضافة على المدى الطويل. ونلمس اليوم تقدمًا ملموسًا في أنظمتنا المالية، حيث نولي اهتمامًا خاصًا بدعم الأداء المستدام، ولا نكتفِ بمجرد الحديث عنه.”

By delivering 740+ impactful events, their passion, leadership, and commitment strengthened the QSW movement and transformed awareness into lasting action, paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future for Qatar.

في 11 ديسمبر، استضاف إرثنا لقاءً خاصاً لتكريم وشكر أكثر من 350 شريكا لأسبوع قطر للاستدامة 2025، الذين أسهموا في إنجاح الحملة الوطنية التي أُقيمت خلال الفترة من 1 إلى 8 نوفمبر بالتعاون مع وزارة البيئة والتغير المناخي. وقام هؤلاء الشركاء بتنفيذ أكثر من 740 فعالية مؤثرة، عزز شغفهم وقيادتهم والتزامهم نجاح أسبوع قطر للاستدامة، وحوّلوا الوعي إلى عمل مستدام، ممهدين الطريق نحو مستقبل أكثر استدامة لدولة قطر.

Qatar Sustainability Week 2025, November 1-8, in collaboration with , engaged more than 200,000 participants across Qatar in a powerful celebration of sustainability. Through inspiring talks, workshops, and hands-on activities, 350+ partners came together to drive action through more than 740 events: from cutting food waste and promoting healthy living, to plastic recycling, tree planting, seabed clean-ups, and mangrove restoration visits. We look forward to building on this momentum toward a more sustainable future for Qatar.

شهد أسبوع قطر للاستدامة 2025 | 1–8 نوفمبر
وبالتعاون مع وزارة البيئة والتغير المناخي مشاركة أكثر من 200,000 شخص في احتفالية وطنية ملهمة في مختلف أنحاء قطر. توحّد أكثر من 350 شريك لتنفيذ أكثر من 740 فعالية تضمنت الحوارات الملهمة وورش العمل والأنشطة التفاعلية التي أحدثت أثراً حقيقياً. شهد الأسبوع العديد من الأنشطة مثل الحد من هدر الغذاء وتعزيز أنماط الحياة الصحية، إلى إعادة تدوير البلاستيك، وزراعة الأشجار، وتنظيف قاع البحر، وزيارات إلى غابات المانغروف. ونتطلع إلى البناء على هذا الزخم نحو مستقبل أكثر استدامة لدولة قطر.

Dr. Mona Al-Kuwari, Editor and Publication Manager at Qatar Foundation’s Earthna, participated as a speaker in the Doha Forum session “Justice in Action: Global & Regional Governance Strategies,” held in partnership with the Stimson Center and the Global Institute for Strategic Research. The session convened senior international leaders and governance experts to examine pathways for advancing justice-driven policy and addressing inequities that challenge global stability. Moderated by Julian Mueller-Kaler of the The Stimson Center, the discussion explored inclusive and effective governance approaches in today’s complex global landscape.

Dr. Mona highlighted Earthna’s work on the Islamic Sustainability Framework (ISF), an initiative developed in collaboration with academic and institutional partners. She emphasized the importance of integrating Islamic ethical principles into sustainability and governance models to ensure culturally grounded, equitable, and justice-oriented policy solutions.
