As Lebanon continues to face the devastating humanitarian consequences of conflict, thousands of families remain displaced, while widespread destruction has left many without safe shelter. At the same time, Syrian refugees continue to endure severe socio-economic hardships, underscoring the urgent need for sustained humanitarian support. With the new school year approaching, many displaced Lebanese families are still living in schools serving as temporary shelters, while countless homes remain damaged or uninhabitable.
During a field mission to Lebanon, Ms. Aisha Al Kawari, Director of Humanitarian Operations at Qatar Charity, met with representatives of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to assess the evolving humanitarian situation and review ongoing response efforts. The visit also provided an opportunity to evaluate the impact of Qatar Charity’s support to UNHCR in assisting displaced Lebanese families and vulnerable Syrian refugees.
Through Qatar Charity’s contribution of US$532,878, implemented between June and November 2026, UNHCR has supported 1,731 displaced families, benefiting approximately 8,655 people. The funding has enabled the rehabilitation of collective shelters for displaced Lebanese families and the provision of cash-for-shelter assistance to vulnerable Syrian refugees, helping improve protection, restore dignity, and provide safer living conditions.
Reflecting on the visit, Ms. Al Kawari highlighted the significant humanitarian needs that persist across Lebanon, noting that many schools continue to serve as temporary shelters despite the imminent return of students, while countless families remain unable to return home. She also emphasized the ongoing challenges faced by Syrian refugees, many of whom continue to rely on humanitarian assistance amid limited livelihood opportunities.
The mission marked the first joint field visit between Qatar Charity and UNHCR in Lebanon, reaffirming the strength of their partnership and their shared commitment to delivering timely, effective, and people-centred humanitarian assistance to those most affected by the crisis.
