Promoting sustainable tourism:

Para La Tierra promotes Paraguay internationally as an ideal destination for ‘sustainable social tourism’. This new approach to tourism encourages visitors to contribute towards existing social, scientific and conservation projects that are designed to have a positive impact on the country. Our objectives:

Our main aim is to help to protect these globally endangered habitats and their inhabitants. We do this by a variety of methods including recruiting volunteers to help and working with the local community. Take part:

We offer a variety of experiences where volunteers can take part in any of our projects. As a volunteer, you can even have a go at all of our projects. Our flexible induction program will give you a taste of everything that’s going on, so you can decide what you like best. If you’re still studying, or just finished, we can help you gain valuable experience to help you on your career path. As an intern, you can design your own project, which we will help you to do in advance, based on your own personal research interests.

Our camera traps have been out in the Dry Chaco this year spying on the creatures that call that amazing forest home!

New article alert! Recently our team published some observations of red and green macaws and hooded capuchin monkeys using the hard, immature fruits of the Acrocomia palm trees as a source of liquid. Both species cracked the hard shells and drank the liquid within!

Our interns where involved in something a little different! They visited the local agricultural high school in Pilar and carried out a poster session for the students, sharing the methods and results of their internship projects. With a variety of studies on howler monkey behaviour and ecology to bird morphology and behaviour this was a valuable intellectual exchange, showing the high school students some of the ways biological science can be applied in the field while giving the interns experience of presenting their results!

This July we welcomed our 9th Project Dragonfly Earth Expedition! For 10 days we were joined by these amazing students as they got a crash course in ecoleadership and applied conservation in Paraguay. They visited the Atlantic Forest, two Mbya Guarani and one Maka communities and then Pilar and the Neembucu Wetland complex. Learning about the complexities and the highs and lows of scientific research, environmental education, collaborating across cultures and languages while visiting places and sharing experiences that most people could even dream of.

Today is the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People. It is such a privilege to collaborate and work with Mbya Guarani and Makâ indigenous communities in Itapua. We’re so excited to see what we can achieve together in the future ❤️

It is that time of year again, the most important day of the year if you ask the children in the Mbya Guarani and Maka schools of Area Educativa 18-13! Día del Niño (children’s day) is coming up in less than two weeks and we want to be able to support the 12 schools in giving the children a chance to enjoy it to the fullest! But to do this we need your help! We are raising money to provide each school with chocolate milk, sweeties, balloons and cakes! There are hundreds of children in these communities who could miss out on a special occasion that they deserve to enjoy, just like any other child in Paraguay.

🎨 Meet the mural that was made by a community, for a community.

As part of our collaboration with Birkbeck, University of London, intern Anne worked with Paraguayan artist Lucero and fellow intern Elora to bring this incredible piece to life at the Mberu Pirapo’i Mbya Guarani school.

Where did Annes amazing design come from? The children themselves. 🧒✏️

We started by asking the kids to draw what mattered most to them — their community, and their dream of an ideal place to live. Their answers said everything: their school, their church (or Opy), forests filled with wildlife, and the yerba mate we’ve been planting together since 2023. 🌿

Every element in this mural came straight from their imaginations.

Thank you to Anne, Lucero, and Elora for turning those drawings into something that will last. What a gift to Mberu Pirapo’i. 💚

🌿Today is World Environment Day — and what a day to share this exciting news.

Our 2026 planting season is complete! Over just six weeks in April and May, we put 30,000 saplings in the ground with two of our Mbya Guaraní partner communities in our reforestation programme.

In Mberu Pirapo’i there are now 25 families taking part — and this season we welcomed a second community, Potrero Guaraní, with 14 families already on board.

The saplings are a mix of native Atlantic Forest species and yerba mate — a cash crop endemic to the region that gives families a sustainable income while the forest grows back.

Every tree planted is habitat restored for the hooded capuchin monkey, and a step toward sustainable livelihoods for the families. 🐒🌱
