ALBANIAN ALPS SUMMER SCHOOL III
"Mapping the Cultural Landscape in the Settlements of the Albanian Alps"
OPEN CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS

Location: Budaçe-Lëpushë, Kelmend, Lëpushë Valley
"Albanian Alps" National Park
Dates: 03-09 July 2026
Application deadline: 10 June 2026

Organised by GO2Albania
Co-organisers: Réseau Tramontana, The Administration of Protected Areas, Shkodër
Funded by: Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust - PONT, European Union - Creative Europe programme

The "Albanian Alps" National Park (IUCN Category II) was established by Government Decision No. 59, dated 26.01.2022, as the largest park in Albania, with an area of 82,844.65 ha.

Situated in the northernmost part of the country, the Park extends across the municipalities of Shkodër and Malësi e Madhe in the Shkodër District, and the municipality of Tropojë in the Kukës District. To the south, it is bordered by three nature parks: "Nikaj-Mertur" (2014), "Lugina e Shalës" (2022) and "Shkrel" (2016). To the north, it is bordered by the Prokletije National Park (2009) of Montenegro, and to the north-east by the Bjeshkët e Nemuna National Park (2012) of Kosovo. Together, these parks form the Albanian Alps, which are situated on the south-easternmost edge of the Dinaric Alps.

The Albanian Alps represent the most magnificent region of Albania. They are the land of myths and legends, of the Këngët e Kreshnikëve and of the Kanun, of heroes who set out to war with a warrior's song and are honoured with a manly wail, of besa and of burrnesha. The Alps are the origin and territory of the majority of the 10 untamed tribes of Gegnia, scattered throughout history from the Danube to the Aegean, and from the Apennines to beyond the Atlantic.

The traditional way of life of the inhabitants, settled from the river valleys to the deepest and most isolated streams, has evolved very slowly over the last 3,000 years, shaping the cultural landscape.

This landscape contains a precious heritage of historical, anthropological, archaeological, ecological and spiritual significance, often threatened by abandonment, modernisation, and climate change.

Taking place in one of the Alps' newest settlements, which until a century ago was used for grazing livestock, this 7-day summer school will offer a unique field experience for the recognition, documentation and mapping of the cultural landscape, to help understand rural civilisation in the mountains of Gegnia.
The programme provides an interdisciplinary space for field-based study of mountain settlements in northern Albania, critical reflection and collective knowledge production.

Details about the Summer School process and the application process can be found in the open call pack at the following link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vGsTWYIfV7xfMQaPVOY4nh5xLzOPXmd3/view?usp=drive_link

FLAVOURS OF UKRAINE
A culinary gathering between the Ukrainian community and project partners

Saturday, 27 June | 6.00 pm – 8.00 pm
Casa da Ribeira (Viseu, Portugal)

As part of the project “Landscapes, Voices and Flavours of the Ukrainian Community in Viseu”, the gastronomic gathering “Flavours of Ukraine” will take place on 27 June at Casa da Ribeira in Viseu.

Following the collection of stories, memories and voices from the Ukrainian community in Viseu, we continue to explore Ukrainian identity through another fundamental aspect of the country’s culture: its cuisine, both in its regional variations and those linked to the cycle of the year.

It is through these flavours that the project’s partners and friends will be introduced to a little more of the traditions, diversity and richness of Ukrainian cultural heritage.

This event marks the start of the second phase of the project, developed by Binaural Npdar in partnership with the Association of Ukrainians in Viseu, with the support of the Municipality of Viseu, through Casa da Ribeira and the Várzea de Calde Linen Museum, and co-funded by the Creative Europe programme as part of the Rede Tramontana project.

We would like to thank everyone who is joining us on this journey and who is helping to preserve, promote and raise awareness of Ukrainian culture amongst the wider community. 💙💛

ROMAN FLOCKS. A POEM

June 11th, 2026
palazzo Valentini, Rome
Italy

This event is organized by Bambun APS as part of the Tramontana Network project.

The presentation of the book “Gregge romane. Poema", edited by Elio Di Michele, Giampiero Giamogante, and Roberta Tucci, with a preface by Gianfranco Spitilli and an afterword by Giovanni Kezich, published by Bambun/Centro Studi Don Nicola Jobbi in December 2025, will take place at the Palazzo Valentini in Rome, starting at 5.30 p.m., coordinated by Nando Giammarini, with remarks by Dario Nanni, Ercole Di Girolamo, Gianni Lattanzio, Katia Ranieri, Elio Di Michele and Giampiero Giamogante, the book’s editors, with the participation of the anthropologist Giovanni Kezich, author of the book’s afterword, in collaboration with the Abruzzese Association of Rome.
"In 1942 – writes Roberta Tucci –, Agostino Annibaldi, a shepherd from Poggio Cancelli (AQ) who moved his flocks to the Roman countryside, completed his remarkable poem in hendecasyllables, "Gregge romane": a unique work, comprising over two thousand five hundred verses divided into twelve chapters, in which the author distills all his knowledge and experience as a sheep farmer rooted in a family and regional context deeply tied to sheep herding", combined with an extraordinary, personal poetic flair. "The poem traces the experience of the transhumant shepherd throughout the entire year, following the changing of the seasons: the ascent to the mountain pastures, with its route, dangers, and customs of rest stops, and reunions with families; mountain grazing; sheep breeds; the herding centers between Abruzzo and Lazio; summer grazing; winter grazing; the lease agreements; the organization of the farm; sheep diseases; the descent from the mountains with the arrival in the Roman countryside; births; shearing; cheese and ricotta production; music, dance, and religious observance.
While Agostino Annibaldi’s biography remains partly obscure, [...] cut short by the tragic conclusion of his death in 1944 following a wartime event, "Gregge romane", hitherto almost entirely unpublished, is finally brought to light and offered to the reader as a 'classic' of Apennine pastoral civilization".
