Archaeologies of Contact – Edition #1: Crossing Waters
Sound piece with a poetic narrative by Ana Carucci

From June to December 2026, the artist Ana Carucci is in residence with the Tramontana Network, hosted by Binaural Nodar, as part of the Artist Residencies at Digital Archives call. Her project draws on sound and textual materials from the four digital archives of the call: the Binaural Nodar Digital Archive (Binaural Nodar, Portugal), the Abruzzo Digital Archive (Bambun APS, Italy), Soinumapa (Audiolab, Basque Country) and Oralitat de Gasconha (Eth Ostau Comengés, Gascony, France).

“Archaeologies of Contact” is conceived as the first edition of an ongoing series exploring archival encounters and interspecies connections. This first edition, “Crossing Waters”, explores the ways in which different communities perceive, name, inhabit and record their relationship with water and with the life that unfolds around it, across time and in different contexts. Within the archives, different ways of naming and relating to the environment emerge, revealing more or less porous relationships between humans, landscapes and other species.

Through a process of listening, reading and selection, the artist works with minimal fragments, gestures, scenes and descriptions that carry a sensory memory of these relationships, approaching the archive as a space where different ways of understanding the world coexist. From this selection she will develop a series of short fragments, closer to sound poems, bringing together materials from different times and places and possibly contemporary field recordings. Rather than being organised in a linear way, the fragments will overlap and affect one another, creating a dialogue between past and present.

Water is the guiding thread: it moves across territories, languages and species, and its presence in the archives makes it possible to perceive how these relationships take shape in different contexts. The result will be a piece composed as a constellation of fragments, each an autonomous unit and at the same time part of a larger whole, opening a reflection on humanity’s shifting sense of belonging in the natural world.

Born in Argentina in 1979, Ana Carucci is an artist trained in the visual arts, with an interdisciplinary practice. Through installations, performances and editorial pieces, she explores the threshold between the strange and the familiar, the natural and the artificial. Particularly interested in how culture relates to nature, she seeks to reveal new layers of meaning in our connections with species, landscapes and objects, in a work inspired by the architecture of dreams that emerges from playing with language and the memory of the senses.

She has taken part in residencies in Argentina, Spain and Germany, and in the programmes “O Cantar das Nascentes” and “Ouvir, Tocar e Imaginar o Barro Negro”, both hosted by Binaural Nodar in Portugal. Her work has been presented at venues such as Seanaps Festival and 48 Stunden Neukölln (Germany), the Museo de Arte Moderno, Museo MACBA, Fondo Nacional de las Artes and Centro de Arte Sonoro (Argentina), and Rota Festival (Spain), among others.

ARTIST RESIDENCY AT THE ARCHIVES: DELPHINE MELLIÈS

This is an initiative of Eth Ostau Comengés as part of the “Creative Europe Tramontana IV” project.

From June to December 2026, the visual artist and performer Delphine Melliès is in residence at Oralitat de Gasconha, the sound archive managed by Eth Ostau Comengés, as part of the Artist Residencies at Digital Archives call of the Tramontana Network.

Carried by the voices of the archive, her project explores the Occitan language, the memory of the Pyrenean mountains and the way speech lives in the body and in gesture. Through attentive listening, she gathers life stories, tales and narratives in the Occitan and Gascon dialects, accounts of daily life in the mountains, of landscapes shaped by farming and pastoral practices, of summer pastures and paths travelled by communities and their flocks, of evening gatherings and of the know-how passed down from generation to generation.

The approach is not a documentary restitution of the archive but a poetic and embodied rewriting, in which the archived voices resonate with the artist’s own memory of the Occitan language. The stories will be handwritten on metal plates, in a slow and repeated gesture: the resistance of the material slows the body down and turns writing into a form of listening, and each plate becomes a trace object carrying both the words and the marks of the hand that rewrote them.

In parallel, she will develop a series of performances of repeated readings, in which the stories are told, retold and shifted. The repetition of voice and gesture deliberately creates a gap with the original accounts, bringing out the variations, omissions and slippages that belong to all oral transmission, and revealing a language in motion rather than a fixed text.

Born in 1993, Delphine Melliès lives and works between Paris, Pantin, the Haute-Corrèze and the Pyrenees. A visual artist and performer, she develops a practice built around a poetics of memory, attentive to rural and pastoral memories and to the ordinary gestures and know-how of everyday life. Her research is deeply rooted in the territory of her childhood, the Ariège and the Pyrenees. She studied photography at the École de Condé and graduated in Art History from the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne in 2018, and she is a member of the Turbo! (Pantin) and Embrayage (Paris) collectives.

In 2022 she presented the performance “Transhumance” at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in Paris, during the Fête de l’Ours, and her work has since been shown at Les Sheds contemporary art centre in Pantin, Les Arches Citoyennes and Galerie Houg in Paris. She has been in residence at La Maison (Salon-la-Tour), Les Sheds and Les Arches Citoyennes, and her embroidered photographs appear in Michel Poivert’s book “Contre-culture dans la photographie contemporaine” (Textuel, 2022).

Immersive sound installation and album by Irane Clavel

From June to December 2026, the violinist and composer Irene Ballesteros Pérez, known as Irane Clavel, is in residence at Soinumapa, the sound archive managed by Audiolab, as part of the Artist Residencies at Digital Archives call of the Tramontana Network.

Her project, “Cartography of Invisible Waters”, builds a new sonic imaginary in which rural water becomes a poetic force. In rural and mountain areas, water has historically been the architectural and social backbone of life: the placement of farmhouses (baserri), roads, bridges and communal washhouses depended on the proximity of streams and springs, and water set the rhythm of work, communal practices and the stories passed down through generations.

The work draws on the water sounds of the Soinumapa archive, presented not as historical evidence but as raw material for a composition: natural water (rivers, streams, springs and fountains), mechanical water (mills, canals and sluices), domestic and social water (washhouses and everyday water sources), oral testimonies about droughts, floods, agricultural labour and rituals, and contextual sounds such as bells, footsteps on bridges, tools and traditional songs related to water.

The violin is the main transformative instrument. Through extended techniques, such as prepared violin and scordatura, and multiple recorded layers, it seeks to emulate the behaviour of water rather than imitate it, gradually merging with the archival recordings until the organic and the interpreted become indistinguishable. Electronic processing and spatialisation blur the boundaries between archive and violin.

The work will take two forms: a multichannel sound installation, in which the audience moves through distinct acoustic and visual zones, and an album, a series of tracks designed for home or broadcast listening.

Born in Valladolid (Spain) in 2002, Irene Ballesteros Pérez, known as Irane Clavel, is a violinist and composer. She studied violin at Musikene and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in violin and electronic composition at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (Hochschule Luzern), under the guidance of Sarah Saviet, Francesca Verunelli and Emilio Guim. Her work, developed under the Anarkopop label, explores electroacoustic composition through an approach that fuses costumbrismo, a focus on everyday customs and popular culture, with postmodern aesthetics and contemporary pop imagery, emphasising gesture and theatricality in performance.

She has taken part in projects such as KASPA, a transdisciplinary research on violin and percussion music, and UKAN, dedicated to premiering works by emerging composers, and attended Colloquium48 in Basel. She has performed at festivals including Lucerne Festival, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Darmstädter Ferienkurse, Impuls Festival and Mixtur Barcelona. Her music has been performed by ensembles such as Dissolution Ensemble, Ensemble Hélix and Luft Linien Duo, and she has received masterclasses from composers including Georges Aperghis, Sarah Nemtsov and Thierry de Mey.

Final presentation of an artist residency carried out as part of the Artist Residencies at Digital Archives call of the Tramontana Network.

The performance will be presented on the afternoon of 31 October 2026 at the Sala Polivalente in Fano Adriano (TE), as part of the Tramontana Festival Toscana-Abruzzo 2026, within the programme of the Festival's Abruzzo leg.

The research draws on sources from the Abruzzo Digital Archive, in particular the sound recordings of the Spitilli Archive and texts from the Nisii and Jobbi Archives. It does not focus on a specific historical period: just like the archival research, the dramaturgy unfolds transversally across time. At its core lies one thematic crux, getting lost. Agro-pastoral culture holds valuable knowledge about orientation, sensory attention, and awareness of the body and the present moment, in an age when we are less and less able to let go of our certainties.

"Transhumance is an anthropological theme that runs through centuries of agro-pastoral journeys. The regions of central Italy are still its beating heart: encyclopaedias of identity that have traced metamorphic paths across the body of the earth, inseparably bound to the life and traditions of Apennine villages. How can we approach the electric and delicate encounter with these possible worlds today, as transhumance wavers between the pursuit of bureaucratic recognition and gradual oblivion?

The research begins with the documents of the Abruzzo Digital Archive. It then draws on the valuable contributions gathered in several Abruzzo villages that are still deeply connected to this practice. From there, the performance proposes a journey through the doubts and gaps that testimonies of transhumance, from the last century to the present day, can raise.

The crossroads, 'u biviu', becomes the dense and mysterious drama of a life, that of the shepherds, shaped by movement. There is the fear of being forgotten, or of forgetting. There is the constant, thrilling temptation to soar above reality and cross into other dimensions, to take refuge in poetry, to flee, to become soul and animal."

Flavia Monfrini, born in Catania in 1997, is an actress, playwright and theatre educator. She holds a Master's degree in Modern Philology from the University of Catania. She trained with directors and teachers including César Brie, Roberto Latini, Davide Enia, Gabriele Vacis and Andrea Lapi. With Lapi, in 2016, she co-founded the Lucipicuraru Company, where she has worked as actress and co-author on productions such as CUNFINI – Sicilia e Grande Guerra, HABITUS and COSI. DUCI., a finalist studio at the 2022 Dante Cappelletti Prize. She is co-founder of the EROSIONI Cultural Association and leads theatre workshops for children and young people. For several years she has also been working on community dramaturgy and socio-cultural projects with the Trame di Quartiere Cooperative in Catania's San Berillo neighbourhood. Since 2023, supported by a research grant from the Tokyo Foundation's Sylff Programme, she has been conducting independent research on identity narratives in the inland areas of Sicily, weaving together anthropology and expressive languages.

HOW DOES A VILLAGE FEED ITSELF?

An initiative organised by Binaural Nodar, as part of the Rede Tramontana project, co-funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme, with the support of the Calde Parish Council and Viseu Municipal Council.

To mark the conclusion of the research and creative residency with anthropologist and sound artist Ana Rodríguez, which explored traditional and contemporary dietary practices in the village of Várzea de Calde, a community dinner was held at which those who had collaborated on the project shared examples of their family cuisine.

“How does a village feed itself?” was conceived as a follow-up to previous projects by Binaural Nodar in collaboration with Ana Rodríguez that dealt, albeit indirectly, with the theme of food: “Plantas Faladas” (2019), “Ecos da Ida do Retorno” (2022) and, more recently, “A Carqueja no Quotidiano de Várzea de Calde” (2025).

This time it was different: eating, cooking and setting the table took centre stage, and it was from this starting point that we sought to understand how Várzea de Calde remembers itself and comes together around food.

“How Does a Village Feed Itself?” was carried out in partnership with the Municipality of Viseu, the Calde Parish Council and the Association of Ukrainians in Viseu, and forms part of the international Rede Tramontana project, funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe Programme — a framework that gives this work, carried out in Várzea de Calde and with the Ukrainian community in Viseu, a dimension that extends far beyond the local level, linking it to a European network of cultural cooperation.

The meeting takes place on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at Klub Pod Kolumnami (pl. Św. Macieja 21, Wrocław).

The European Tramontana Network, dedicated to the intangible cultural heritage of Europe's rural and mountain communities, will reunite in Albania for its 3rd International Forum, hosted by GO2Albania from October 19th to 21st, 2026.

Tramontana Network is an international creative and research network established in 2012 through the European Union's Culture Programme. Since then, it has gone through three further co-financing cycles in the Creative Europe Program—the only project of its kind in Europe—and has now expanded the network to 11 members from 7 different countries, operating in Portugal (Binaural Nodar), Spain (Audiolab), France (Ràdio País, Numériculture Gascogne, Eth Ostau Comengés), Italy (La Leggera APS, LEM-Italia, Bambun APS), Poland (Akademia Profil), Romania (Orma Sodalitas Anthropologica), and Albania (GO2 Albania), in addition to numerous associated partners from all the countries that take part in the project.

With a strong multidisciplinary approach spanning sociolinguistics, anthropology, ethnomusicology, and sound and visual arts, the network is dedicated to the documentation, research, preservation, and creative dissemination of the intangible cultural heritage of European mountain communities. Its work has received international recognition, including its selection among the Creative Europe Success Stories (2018) and the European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Grand Prix (2020) in the Research category.

This year's Forum brings the network to Shkodër and the Albanian Alps, offering an opportunity to reflect on the work accomplished and exchange experiences across different research fields. Through this gathering, GO2Albania welcomes its European partners to a territory where mountain landscapes, collective memory, and living traditions remain closely intertwined, continuing Tramontana's commitment to connecting communities and cultures across Europe's mountain regions.

The 3-day programme will combine working sessions among project partners, discussions on research, digital archives, artistic production, educational initiatives and public engagement, alongside activities dedicated to the cultural heritage of northern Albania. The Forum will conclude with a field visit to Lëpushë, in the Albanian Alps National Park, where project partners will explore the mountain landscape, summer pastures, and local cultural heritage.
Open to public, GO2Albania, in collaboration with Shkodër County, will present the photography exhibition, featuring historical photographs taken in Kelmend dating since 1897. The exhibition offers a visual journey through the landscapes, people, and everyday life of Kelmend, drawing on archival collections from across Europe.

A MORNING WITH THE BLACK CLAY OF RIBOLHOS

Last Saturday, the event "A Morning with the Black Clay of Ribolhos" opened with a guided walk led by potter Jorge Ferreira, taking in several places in the village symbolically linked to pottery. After the walking tour, an audiovisual installation by Luís Costa, coordinator of Binaural Nodar, entitled "A Donkey's Tale", was presented.

Following the walking tour, an audiovisual installation by Luís Costa, coordinator of Binaural Nodar, was presented. Titled “A Donkey Tale,” it imagines the relationship between two donkeys—one from the province of Zamora (Spain) and the other from Ribolhos. This work is part of the author’s research within the context of the Doctoral Program in Artistic Creation at the University of Aveiro, in partnership with two research centers: ID+ (Aveiro) and LiDA (ESAD Caldas da Rainha).

In September 2023, the Oficina do Barro Negro was inaugurated in one of the rooms of the former elementary school in the village of Ribolhos (Castro Daire), a space dedicated to showcasing a craft tradition rooted in this small village, located along National Highway No. 2. This space was curated by Marta Carvalhal, Luís Costa, and Jorge Ferreira, in close collaboration with two initiatives of the Portuguese government: the National “Saber Fazer” Program and the National Arts Plan. Since then, Oficina do Barro Negro has hosted a variety of activities, including artist residencies, school workshops, walking tours, temporary exhibitions, and book presentations, through a joint effort by the various organizations that program the space.

In the weeks leading up to the event, artist-in-residence Rita Gomes conducted a research project titled “Justaposição” on the local territory, exploring the encounter between clay and granite—two distinct materials that create a dialogue between what transforms and what remains. Starting with small granite rocks collected in the Montemuro Mountains—rocks that were once part of walls built for pastoral activities—the artist incorporated them into her creations, allowing the clay to mold itself to the stone and, through fire, enabling both materials to form a new relationship. Each piece explored the tension between fragility and resilience, between the delicacy of hand-crafted material and the raw presence of the mountainous landscape, affirming juxtaposition as a form of proximity without fusion, where different materials coexist and reveal new possibilities.

TRAMONTANA IN MONTEMURO

From 15 August to 12 September, the village of Parada de Ester (Castro Daire) hosted six artists and researchers as part of the Tramontana Network project, co-funded by the European Union's Creative Europe programme.

Four artistic research projects took root in the Montemuro mountain range: 'Nomos', by Francesca Migliorin (IT), traced the routes of transhumance using a hand-built pinhole camera; 'The Mountain Remembers Water', by Jurgen Walschot (BE), drew and painted using water from mountain springs and streams; Ready Thought, by Nicolò Minisi (IT), transformed the Binaural Nodar ethnographic sound archive into an artist's book and a public sculpture carved into the earth; and Heather Kapplow (US) turned her own heartbeat into an instrument, in a project on mental health and self-esteem developed with young people from the community.

The residency also hosted Frances Crow and David Prior (UK), of the duo Liminal, who returned to the Viseu Dão Lafões region to revisit sites from their previous research and write a text for the book celebrating the 20th anniversary of Binaural Nodar's artist residency programme, due to be launched later this year.

A co-production by Binaural Nodar and the Municipality of Castro Daire, through the Municipal Library, with the support of the Union of Civil Parishes of Parada de Ester and Ester.

LIVING HERITAGE AND EUROPEAN PROJECTS: FROM COMMUNITIES TO PLACES

An activity developed with the participation of LEM Italia, in the context of Tramontana Network project, co-funded by the European Union, through its Creative Europe programme

“Living Heritage and European Projects: From Communities to Places” involves a delegation of 23 participants from Volda University, Norway: 20 students and three faculty members.

The afternoon will begin in Cellino Attanasio with the interactive workshop “What Makes Heritage Alive?”, focusing on intangible cultural heritage and its role in contemporary European communities.

Starting from the experience of Tramontana IV, we will explore with the students how living heritage can be collected, documented, transmitted, co-created and shared, as well as the role of local communities in safeguarding and reinterpreting their cultural heritage. The experience of REVIVE will also be briefly presented as a complementary example of the relationship between culture, community engagement and the regeneration of rural areas.

The workshop will be followed by a short visit to the historic centre of Cellino Attanasio and its Belvedere, where we will focus on the relationship between community, cultural landscape and rural territory.

The group will then travel to Montegualtieri, where the visit will focus on its distinctive medieval tower and the surrounding Vomano Valley landscape, providing a further opportunity to discuss the connections between tangible and intangible heritage, local traditions, communities and places.

The activity continues the cooperation with Volda University initiated through the previous study visit in 2024, this time involving a new group of students and two additional faculty members.
