Scent detection work isn’t just field operational time—it requires continuous baseline maintenance. 🐾

Training sessions like this help keep our dogs' noses calibrated for their conservation and tracking missions. Precision in scent discrimination takes regular work, routine practice, and structured setups, to ensure top performance in the field.

Consistency is key to keeping working dogs sharp, focused, and ready for nature conservation efforts in Portugal.

Sniffing out vital research! 🐺🌿

Watch our detection dog in action as he alert on wolf s**t during one of our ongoing field projects in Portugal.

Scent detection dogs play a crucial role in non-invasive wildlife monitoring—helping research teams track protected species like the Iberian wolf without disturbing their natural habitat.

At Dogs for Nature, we are passionate about the power of canine abilities, whether it’s specialized field detection work or providing high-energy, nature-based care.

The Power of Canine Odor Detection in Land and Wildlife Management 🐄🐑🐐

While the work of conservation detection dogs isn't always glamorous, it is incredibly vital.
Recently, the Dogs for Nature k9 Team located a missing sheep carcass hidden deep within thick wetland reeds.
Locating deceased livestock and wildlife is a critical component of:

- Disease Surveillance: Prompt removal prevents the contamination of local water sources and the spread of pathogens.

- Agricultural Support: Helping land managers and farmers account for livestock and manage livestock health.

- Ecosystem Monitoring: Providing accurate data on wildlife mortality and predator tracking.

An incredible demonstration of focus and environmental utility by the team today.

An inside look at our recent work at Marseille Airport. 🐾✈️

When the Dogs for Nature team conducts surveys at airports, the logistics look a bit different than standard field projects.

To find and protect the eggs of the endangered Tetrax tetrax, we worked night shifts directly between the active runways and taxiways. We took this short video to give you a simple, unfiltered look at what our work environment is like on these types of projects.

It’s a unique setting, and we are very proud of how steadily our dogs handle the specific challenges of working on a live airfield.

🥚🐾 Amazing work by K9 Ajax at the Aeroport Marseille Provence

Watch as our newest conservation detection dog, Ajax, guides us through the grass in the pitch black to find a nest of Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax) eggs.
The Little Bustard is one of Europe's most endangered steppe birds. Locating these nests safely is a major step in protecting the species, a mission driven by the incredible LIFE Programme LIFE La Valbonne..

It takes an immense amount of training, drive, and partnership for a dog to work this accurately in a busy environment like an airport at night.

We couldn't be prouder of him!

Show Ajax some love in the comments! 👇🐶❤️

A dog’s life is beautifully simple: be present, wait patiently, and trust the process. 🐾

While the human side of conservation involves a lot of paperwork and time-dependent logistics, our detection dog reminds us to stay grounded in the moment.

But it’s all worth it. We are thrilled to be at supporting the project to "hunt" for Little Bustard eggs and protect this amazing species! 🥚🐕

Proximity alert. Do you know what it is? It can be extremely useful to know this behavior of your dog—especially in conservation, when working with and around targets as fragile as little bustard chicks.
