Stepping back in time to where Madeira’s history first began... 📜✨

After an inspiring morning in Santo da Serra, our TALES 2.0 group traveled to the coastal town of Machico to experience the Mercado Quinhentista, a vibrant 16th-century historical festival that brings the island's rich origin story to life.
Machico holds a unique place in Portuguese history: it is the landing site where navigators Zarco and Tristão Vaz first stepped foot on the island, celebrated Madeira's first mass, and established its first captaincy. Founded in 2006 as a educational initiative, this award-winning festival transforms the entire town into a living showcase of heritage, traditional crafts, and historical reenactments.
To truly connect with the festival's atmosphere, our participants embarked on a hands-on exploration task. Navigating the historical market, they searched out key heritage sites and interacted directly with historical figures, discovering the living stories behind each character and location.
Putting our project’s digital storytelling methodologies into action, teams then became video production crews. They filmed, interviewed, and captured the sights and sounds of the festival to produce short documentary videos preserving Machico's living culture.
When you combine historical discovery with mindful digital tools, heritage stops being something locked in history books, it becomes a story you can live, capture, and share with the world. 🎬🏛️

What happens when you trade your smartphone screen for the rustle of leaves and the sound of running water? 🌿✨
Our morning in Santo da Serra began with an intentional step back from technology. Leaving our phones behind, we set off on a mindful walk along one of Madeira’s traditional levadas, clearing our minds and immersing ourselves in the island's natural rhythm.
Back at Quinta do Lagar, that presence was immediately put to the test during the "Spider Web" teambuilding challenge. Split into two groups with one major twist, everyone was restricted to speaking only their native languages, we had to strategize and physically pass every team member through the web structure without breaking rules. Without a common language, non-verbal cues, deep trust, and creative teamwork became our universal way to communicate.
Next, we connected with local culture through a hands-on craft workshop led by Francisco from our host organization, Forgotten Folktales. We learned the art of crafting traditional Madeiran "joeiras" (kites) patiently shaping flexible canes for the frame, securing the structure with fishing line, and attaching light tissue paper for the body and tail.
After a coffee break, we took our handcrafted joeiras out to an open field to see if our designs could catch the wind. Watching our kites take flight against the sky was the ultimate morning reward, a powerful reminder of what happens when we replace digital distraction with hands-on creation, teamwork, and living tradition. 🪁🍃

Stepping away from screen notifications to tune into the rhythm of nature set the tone for Day 9 of TALES 2.0. 🌲✨
Our morning began in Santo da Serra with a mindful, phone-free walk along Madeira’s traditional levadas, trading digital noise for presence and focus.
Back at Quinta do Lagar, we jumped straight into the "Spider Web" challenge, working in teams restricted to speaking only our native languages. Without shared words, non-verbal communication, trust, and creative problem-solving took center stage.
Next, we connected with local tradition during a hands-on workshop led by Francisco member of the hosting team, crafting traditional Madeiran "joeiras" (kites) using canes, fishing line, and tissue paper before heading out to an open field to fly them. 🪁
In the afternoon, we traveled to Machico to experience the Mercado Quinhentista (16th-Century Historical Market), a cultural festival created in 2006 to celebrate the historical identity of Machico’s Captaincy, where Portuguese navigators first landed on the island. Surrounded by living history, participants navigated key heritage sites, interacted with historical figures, and applied digital storytelling methodologies to film short documentaries capturing the festival's vibrant atmosphere. 🎬📜
When you disconnect from distractions, you make space to connect with people, heritage, and the real stories around you.

After sharing a delicious fusion dinner around the table, the energy shifted into a magical joint Cultural Night hosted by Ukraine and Malta! 🇺🇦🇲🇹✨

Intercultural exchange sits right at the heart of Erasmus+, and tonight was all about stepping into each other’s heritage through taste, stories, and hands-on traditions:

🇺🇦 Ukraine: Eugene led a fun, hands-on workshop teaching us how to roll dough and craft traditional Ukrainian dumplings (Varenyky) from scratch!🥟
🇲🇹 Malta: The Maltese team introduced us to "Il-Quċċija," a charming first-birthday custom where a toddler picks an object from a lineup to symbolically predict their future career path. They also treated us to a spread of local flavors, from traditional fesh Maltese sandwiches and savory quiche-style pastries to a variety of iconic Maltese chips and the famous local soft drink, Kinnie! 🥤

From rolling dumplings to discovering unique customs and flavors, moments like these remind us how shared traditions and storytelling bring six partner countries together as one TALES family. ❤️

When culinary traditions merge, incredible things happen around the dinner table! 🍡🍔
After an action-packed day of racing wooden cars and crafting cultural tokens, everyone pitched in to prepare a special fusion dinner. Guided by our barbecue pro, Samet, we fired up the grill to prepare the barbecue in a traditional Turkish style, bringing unique flavours to a classic Madeiran favorite: the iconic Prego no Bolo do Caco!
Our trainer Andreia took command of the grill, leading a true community effort as the entire group joined hands to assemble the meal. Together, we served chicken pregos on the Bolo do Caco prepared by the participants, along with delicious grilled skewers of mushrooms, cucumbers, tomatoes, and vegetarian hamburgers ensuring our vegetarian friends enjoyed a fantastic feast as well!
Sharing a meal prepared by so many hands was the ultimate celebration of culture, teamwork, and togetherness before diving into our evening Cultural Night. 🍽️✨

After the thrilling adrenaline of the wooden car race, it was time to slow down, reset, and immerse ourselves in a peaceful afternoon of creative cultural exchange 🎨🌿
Gathered together over a relaxing coffee break, our national teams took center stage to share meaningful pieces of their heritage through hands-on art workshops:
- 🇹🇷 Turkey guided us in decorating tote bags, adorning them with traditional symbols and intricate cultural patterns.
- 🇱🇻 Latvia hosted a grounding rock-painting session, teaching us the stories and meanings behind ancient Latvian motifs.
- 🇲🇹 Malta led a crafting workshop where we built miniature models of the Luzzu, the iconic, brightly colored traditional Maltese fishing boats.

Sitting side by side, painting and crafting, we did more than just create physical tokens to take home. We shared stories, slowed down, and connected deeply through non-formal learning and creative expression. It was the perfect reminder that preserving culture isn't just about looking at the past, it's about creating together in the present. ✨

And then came the moment everyone had been waiting for… the long-awaited Carrinhos de Pau race! 🏁🏎️
After a morning filled with creative video editing, team-building challenges, relaxing yoga, and decorating our handmade wooden cars, it was finally time to put our creations to the ultimate test. Built around traditional Madeiran heritage, these wooden cars were no longer just timber they were vibrant, custom-designed racers packed with team pride and days of anticipation! 🎨✨
The energy on the track was pure adrenaline as teams lined up, cheering, laughing, and pushing their handcrafted racers to the limit. A few participants experienced some wild, unexpected crashes along the way, but fortunately, no one was injured, just lots of sore muscles from laughing so hard! 😅🙌
It wasn't just about speed, it was about celebrating living cultural traditions through non-formal learning, teamwork, and turning centuries-old craftsmanship into an unforgettable shared experience. 🌿🏁

Once the puzzle was solved, it was time to unleash pure creativity! 🎨🚗
As part of our hands-on traditional heritage activities, participants turned raw wooden "Carrinhos de Pau" into vibrant works of art for the evening’s big race. Working together, each team decorated their car with incredible imagination, making every single one distinct, colorful, and packed with personality.
It was amazing to see how a simple wooden frame could bring out so much team spirit, laughter, and artistic expression! ✨

We kicked off our morning with a high-energy icebreaker to align our focus before stepping into an advanced video editing workshop. Guided by digital storytelling methodologies, facilitated by a member of the hosting team Gabriel, participants explored the critical role of sound design and cut styles, applying these fresh insights directly to refine the video footage they had previously recorded. 🎬✨
To keep the momentum going, we jumped into a hands-on teamwork challenge: bound together at the wrists with string in pairs, participants had to communicate, adapt, and cooperate to figure out how to untangle themselves! 🧩
Right after solving the puzzle, Dominika guided us through a peaceful yoga session, offering a mindful physical reset to center our thoughts and restore energy. 🧘‍♂️
We wrapped up the morning with an interactive cybersecurity workshop facilitated by the Turkish team. Through a playful "intervention" where they "accused" a participant of oversharing on social media, they turned a real digital risk into an engaging case study on online safety, digital footprints, and social responsibility. 🔒📱
