✏️🍎Donations Support Forestry Education for CA Kids & Youth 👩🏻‍🏫

Just $2.05 will fund one student kit which includes a Tag Along With Twig activity book, Our Forest Gives Us coloring sheet, a pencil, a ruler, and three educational forest bookmarks. Donations will also fund youth education about sustainable forest management and help support our Talk About Forests lesson delivery. 🖍️📚

Did you know that our forests are not just a place of natural beauty or a place to harvest timber, but also a source of some of our favorite flavors? This week, we're giving a shoutout to the forest for providing us with some incredible products:

🍁 Maple Syrup: Straight from the heart of the forest, this liquid gold transforms our pancakes and waffles into a sweet, comforting delight. The perfect touch of nature's sweetness!

🌿 Cinnamon: Harvested from the inner bark of trees, cinnamon adds warmth and depth to our dishes. Sprinkle it over your morning oatmeal or latte for that cozy forest hug.

Check out these awesome benefits to sustainable forestry! 🪵♻️

🌲Forestry Careers 💼

According to a publication from UC ANR, the forestry and forest products sector contribute approximately $39 billion and 177,000 jobs to California’s economy.

This includes $22 billion and 82,800 jobs in direct contributions and $17 billion and 95,100 jobs in indirect or induced contributions.

The forestry and logging industries directly contribute $437 million and 5,700 jobs to the state economy and $500 million and 3,600 jobs in indirect or induced economic impact.

⚡Renewable Energy ⚡

There are 87 biomass power plants throughout the state of California. Together, they produced a total of 5,628 gigawatt hours of biomass-produced electricity. One gigawatt is roughly the size of two coal-fired power plants and is enough energy to power 750,000 homes!

🪵CA Mass Timber Projects 🪓

The International Mass Timber Report noted that California has the most mass timber projects in the United States. Some of these projects will reach heights up to 18 stories tall!

On September 28th, we had the privilege of hosting 14 legislative staff members from the capital on an educational tour through the Sierra Nevada forests. 🌲🌿

We visited some remarkable locations and couldn't be more grateful for the insights and knowledge we gained along the way. Here are a few highlights:

🌲 **UC Berkeley’s Blodgett Forest Research Center:** We delved into the heart of research and innovation in forestry. The incredible minds at UC Berkeley shared their wisdom on sustainable practices, forest health, prescribed burning, management techniques, land ownership, reforestation, and post-fire salvage.

🔥 **King Fire and Mosquito Fire Burn Scars:** We witnessed the impact of wildfires on our beloved forests. It was a stark reminder of the challenges we face and the importance of pre- and post-wildfire management.

🪓 **Active Timber Operation with Advanced Cable Logging:** Guests got up close and personal with the world of timber operations. The cutting-edge techniques used to ensure minimal environmental impact during post-fire salvage operations were eye-opening.

🌱 **Reforested Property after the King Fire:** Witnessing the rebirth of a forest decimated by fire was truly inspiring. It showcased the resilience of our natural environment when foresters create the right conditions for success.

They answered questions on Forestry 101, discussed the critical issues facing California's forests, and highlighted the benefits of sustainable forest management to the overall health of our forests. Our forests are vital to our economy, well-being, and environment, and it's essential that we all understand their importance. 🌍

Sustainable forestry practices can ease the pressure on our forests. 🪵♻️ Sixty years and 2 billion board feet later, this sustainably managed forest still holds 1.5 billion board feet of standing timber, and supports great blue heron rookeries, black bears, rubber boas and bald eagles. 🦅🐍

Though the Dixie fire burned through there in 2021, sustainable forest practices allowed the area to keep the forest stock plentiful and healthy. 🌳
