[PT] Na semana passada inaugurámos “Uncharismatic Aliens: Weird Life on Earth and Beyond in Science Fiction and Bio Art” no Jardim Botânico do Porto👽🦋🌿

Esta exposição colectiva integra o projecto Extraterrestrial Posthumanism, que investiga de que forma a ciência contemporânea, a ficção científica e a bioarte podem transformar a nossa compreensão da vida, ao centrar-se nas formas de existência extraterrestre mais prováveis — mas menos imaginadas: os microrganismos e outros organismos “não carismáticos”.
Partindo de descobertas recentes da astrobiologia, que sugerem que a vida alienígena poderá assentar em bioquímicas radicalmente diferentes das que conhecemos na Terra, o projecto questiona por que razão os microrganismos continuam a ser culturalmente negligenciados, apesar de constituírem as formas de vida mais antigas e diversificadas do nosso planeta.

[EN] Last week we opened “Uncharismatic Aliens Weird Life on Earth and Beyond in Science Fiction and Bio Art” at Porto’s Botanical Garden.

This collective shown is drawn from the Extraterrestrial Posthumanism project that investigates how contemporary science, science fiction, and bio art can reshape our understanding of life by focusing on the most likely—yet least imagined—forms of extraterrestrial existence: microbial and “uncharismatic” organisms. Building on recent astrobiology, which proposes that alien life may rely on radically different biochemistries, the project explores why microbes remain culturally overlooked despite being Earth’s most ancient and diverse life forms.

“No âmbito da nossa residência artística Cosmic Consciousness no SETI Institute, e durante uma residência na Cultivamos Cultura, nós — três artistas-investigadores, Daniela Brill Estrada, Bart Kuipers e Julie-Michèle Morin — realizámos uma experiência de co-criação artística com seres extraterrestres especulativos. Estávamos a treinar uma IA para personificar um poeta alienígena, utilizando uma combinação de poesia humana e dados sobre a composição química de atmosferas de exoplanetas promissores.”

 “As part of our Cosmic Consciousness artist residency at the SETI Institute, and during a residency at Cultivamos Cultura, we—three artist-researchers, Daniela Brill Estrada, Bart Kuipers, and Julie-Michèle Morin—conducted an experiment in artistic co-creation with speculative extraterrestrial beings. We were training an AI to impersonate an alien poet using a combination of human poetry and data on the chemical composition of promising exoplanetary atmospheres.”

A exposição, intitulada “Natureza Corpuscular”, com curadoria de Marta de Menezes, integra obras da colecção e conta com a participação dos artistas: Daniela Brill Estrada, Ingrid Hess, Shuang Xu, Christina Gruber, Maya Fernandes, Kempe, Paulo Bernardino Bastos, Felipe Shibuya, Anna Isaak Ross, Mariana Dias Coutinho, Gail Hocking, Ellen Wetmore and Lee Russell

Entre a margem e a maré, entre o cheio e o vazio, entre o visível e o invisível, o Rio Mira desfaz e refaz seus corpos: partículas de luz, sedimentos e silêncio que habitam o espaço entre as matérias. As obras desta exposição elaboram sobre uma natureza múltipla, onde o visível se fragmenta e o invisível pede passagem. ”

“Between the riverbank and the tide, between fullness and emptiness, between the visible and the invisible, the Mira River dissolves and reshapes its bodies: particles of light, sediment, and silence inhabiting the space between forms of matter. The works in this exhibition reflect on a multiple and shifting nature, where the visible fragments and the invisible asks to emerge.”

Nasceu em Lisboa e vive em Santa Clara-a-Velha (Odemira). O seu trabalho entrelaça escultura, instalação site-specific e práticas colaborativas numa reflexão sobre como habitamos e nos relacionamos com o mundo. Guiada pela atenção ao material – a sua memória, sabedoria e potencial de conexão –, envolve-se com os recursos locais e o artesanato tradicional como atos de cuidado e pertença.

[EN] Mariana Dias Coutinho was one of our residents for the first edition of the OASis project “Por baixo da Figueira” between October 2025 and March 2026 🌿

She was born in Lisbon and lives in Santa Clara-a-Velha (Odemira). Her work intertwines sculpture, site-specific installation, and collaborative practices in a reflection on how we inhabit and relate to the world. Guided by an attention to material—its memory, wisdom, and potential for connection—she engages with local resources and traditional craftsmanship as acts of care and belonging.

Foi uma noite muito especial, com casa cheia e uma energia incrível partilhada entre público, som, natureza e tecnologia.

“Symbiotic Noise” é uma instalação viva que cruza bioacústica, inteligência artificial e ecossistemas locais numa experiência sonora e visual imersiva. Através de fungos, micélio e dados em tempo real, a obra transforma sinais biológicos em música e luz, criando um diálogo entre natureza, tecnologia e comunidade.

It was a truly special evening, with a full house and an incredible energy shared between audience, sound, nature, and technology.

“Symbiotic Noise” is a living installation that merges bioacoustics, artificial intelligence, and local ecosystems into an immersive sonic and visual experience. Using fungi, mycelium, and real-time data, the work transforms biological signals into music and light, creating a dialogue between nature, technology, and community.

[PT] 4ª edição do Festival das Florestas Marinhas a acontecer entre 13 e 22 de maio de 2026, em Vila Nova de Milfontes. Ao longo de uma semana, o festival propõe um conjunto de iniciativas e experiências, com momentos destinados à sensibilização para a conservação marinha, à partilha de conhecimento científico e à descoberta ativa do ambiente costeiro e marinho.

A Cultivamos Cultura teve o prazer de contribuir com workshops nos passados dias 14 e 15 com os temas “Herbário de Algas” e “Mundos Microscópicos”.

[EN] The 4th edition of the Seaforest Festival happening between May 13th and 22nd, 2026, in Vila Nova de Milfontes. Over the course of a week, the festival proposes a series of initiatives and experiences, including moments dedicated to raising awareness for marine conservation, sharing scientific knowledge, and actively discovering the coastal and marine environment.

Cultivamos Cultura was pleased to organize workshops on the 14th and 15th, focusing on the themes “Algae Herbarium” and “Microscopic Worlds.”

[PT] Sreya está em residência na CC de 16 de maio a 13 de junho!
“Acabei de pensar tanto na água que ela deixou de fazer sentido. Mas é preciso sê-la. Mais do que ser apenas invisível, elástica, bonita, cheirosa, forte, matriz, ser água é um super poder que engloba todas as características necessárias para percorrer a via daqui para a frente de forma cristalina. Os cardos ficaram para trás e também eles foram contornados flawlessly. Em residência na Cultivamos Cultura irei continuar a explorar a imagem da água para não esquecer a necessidade de o ser. Esta residência resultará numa exposição na Galeria Zaratan, em Lisboa, ainda este ano.”

Sreya (Lisboa, 1988) é uma artista que trabalha principalmente no campo da escultura cerâmica, desenvolvendo também práticas em pintura, instalação e música.
A sua prática artística é intuitiva e investigativa, enraizada em processos emocionais e contextuais. Aborda a escultura cerâmica através da figuração, ornamentação e narratividade, recorrendo ao imaginário pessoal e  colectivo como recurso simbólico e expressivo.

 “I just thought so much about water that it stopped making sense. But one must be it. More than just being invisible, elastic, beautiful, scented, strong, matrix — being water is a superpower that encompasses all the necessary characteristics to move forward from here in a crystalline way. The thistles are left behind, and they too were flawlessly navigated around. While in residence at Cultivamos Cultura, I will continue to explore the image of water in order not to forget the need to be it. This residency will result in an exhibition at Galeria Zaratan, in Lisbon, later this year.”

Sreya (Lisbon, 1988) is an artist who works primarily in the field of ceramic sculpture, also developing practices in painting, installation, and music. Her artistic practice is intuitive and investigative, rooted in emotional and contextual processes. She approaches ceramic sculpture through figuration, ornamentation, and narrativity, drawing on personal and collective imagery as a symbolic and expressive resource.
