🇵🇹 Provavelmente ainda não falámos sobre isto. Mas foi especial.

No dia 25 de junho, a Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra abriu-nos as portas para encerrar a 3.ª edição dos "Dias do Japão", uma iniciativa dedicada a ampliar a visibilidade da cultura japonesa em Portugal, com o apoio da Embaixada do Japão em Portugal e da Fundação Japão em Madrid. Fizemos dois workshops de Taiko com a comunidade da FLUC e, no final, tocámos no átrio da faculdade.

Numa das universidades mais antigas da Europa. Rodeados de pessoas que nunca tinham visto Taiko ao vivo. Com a história de Portugal e do Japão a pesarem, da melhor forma, em cada golpe.

Há dias que ficam. Este foi um deles.

🇬🇧 We probably never talked about this. But it was something special.

On June 25th, the Faculdade de Letras from Universidade de Coimbra welcomed us to close the 3rd edition of "Dias do Japão", an initiative dedicated to amplifying Japanese culture in Portugal, supported by the Embassy of Japan in Portugal and the Japan Foundation in Madrid. We ran two Taiko workshops with the FLUC community and, at the end, we performed in the faculty's main hall.

In one of the oldest universities in Europe. Surrounded by people who had never seen Taiko live. With the shared history of Portugal and Japan weighing, in the best possible way, on every strike.

Some days stay with you. This was one of them.

É aquele som que aparece nas cenas épicas. Aquela energia que faz o coração acelerar antes de uma batalha. Aquele ritmo que parece carregar o peso de mil anos de história. Amanhã podes parar de o ouvir e começar a fazê-lo.

🇵🇹 Há uma razão pela qual sais de uma aula de Taiko diferente de como entraste 🥁.

Não é só o cansaço físico. Não é só a adrenalina. É que durante uma hora, a tua cabeça teve apenas uma coisa para fazer: estar presente. Sem notificações. Sem listas de tarefas. Sem o peso do que aconteceu hoje ou do que tens de fazer amanhã. Só o ritmo e o teu corpo a responder a ele.

A ciência há muito que reconhece o poder terapêutico da percussão. Reduz o cortisol, a hormona do stress. Sincroniza os dois hemisférios do cérebro. Cria uma sensação de “flow”, esse estado raro em que o tempo desaparece e só existe o momento.

Mas o Taiko vai mais longe do que tocar a solo. É tocar com outros. É sentir que o teu ritmo faz parte de algo maior. É a sensação, impossível de explicar, fácil de sentir, de uma sala inteira a respirar ao mesmo tempo.

Isso não é só música. É medicina 🎌.

It’s not just the physical tiredness. It’s not just the adrenaline. It’s that for one hour, your mind had only one job: to be present. No notifications. No to-do lists. No weight of what happened today or what you need to do tomorrow. Just the rhythm and your body responding to it.

Science has long recognised the therapeutic power of percussion. It reduces cortisol, the stress hormone. It synchronises both hemispheres of the brain. It creates a state of “flow”, that rare place where time disappears and only the moment exists.

But Taiko goes further than playing alone. It’s playing with others. It’s feeling that your rhythm is part of something larger. It’s the feeling, impossible to explain, easy to feel, of an entire room breathing at the same time.

O Taiko conhece bem esse sentimento. É a razão pela qual as pessoas páram quando ouvem os tambores. É a razão pela qual uma sala de estranhos consegue tocar como uma só coisa. É a razão pela qual, quando o ritmo começa, o tempo parece mudar.

Hoje, deixa o eclipse impressionar-te. E se quiseres sentir mais daquele mesmo arrepio...já sabes onde nos encontrar 🥁🎌.

🇬🇧 Today the sun disappears. And the world stops to watch 🌑.

There's something deeply human about this: stopping everything, looking up and letting yourself be moved by something far greater than yourself.

Taiko knows that feeling well. It's the reason people stop when they hear the drums. It's the reason a room full of strangers can play as one. It's the reason that when the rhythm starts, time seems to shift.

🇵🇹 9 de agosto. Nagasaki. 11h02 🕊️. Há 80 anos, o mundo mudou num segundo. Hoje, o Japão pára. E nós paramos com ele.

O Taiko nasceu numa cultura que conhece a dor da guerra e que escolheu transformá-la em ritmo, em comunidade, em vida. Cada vez que tocamos, carregamos essa história connosco.

Hoje não há performance. Não há convite para aulas. Há só um momento de silêncio pelas vítimas de Nagasaki, e uma esperança partilhada de que o mundo nunca mais precise de parar assim.

🇬🇧 August 9th. Nagasaki. 11:02 a.m 🕊️. 80 years ago, the world changed in a single second. Today, Japan pauses. And we pause with it.

Taiko was born from a culture that knows the pain of war and chose to transform it into rhythm, into community, into life. Every time we play, we carry that history with us.

Today there is no performance. No invitation to class. Just a moment of silence for the victims of Nagasaki, and a shared hope that the world never has to stop like this again.
