SABIAS QUE? Ep.4 [English]: The housing crisis in Portugal: Some aspects that might help to understand it!

This video was filmed at Rua da Banharia, quite in the heart of Porto Historical Centre. In this case in the area of “Sé” neighborhood. The initial idea was to edit and make a sort of semi-professional vídeo but it turned out, considering my edition capacities, to be a too ambitious plan.The main goal in this video is to “offer” some reflections and likely causes that help to explain the extremely severe housing crisis that Portugal is facing since some years ago. For sure the issue/crisis is not exclusive from Portugal but there are probably some aspects that make it particularly serious.

The price of the houses in Portugal as been growing since 2013, with a increase of 170%!!! in the past 10 years.
The number of people in homeless condition doubled since 2019 and it´s now estimated in 14.000!

Porto has 6.198 “Alojamento Local” registers, the majority in the so-called historical centre. (2018).

TODAY, the 26th of September, we did again (after a long time) the SMT4 - Porto Stories and Legends in Miragaia and around (renamed) and we revisited many of the stories and legends that turn this area into such a relevant place to get so much of Porto´s history, identity and culture.

The photo is one that sadly represents quite well what´s the reality of Porto nowadays. A city dominated by speculation and mass tourism. A city losing its identity and essence at an extremelly fast speed. But a city that is still resistance somehow as the photo also expresses.

SMT4 - Porto Stories and Legends in Miragaia and around
Porto is full of stories and legends, you can find them almost in every corner and neighborhood. But probably there isn´t any other place like Miragaia where even its name is “legendary”. So join us in this adventure through some of the most iconic and even “essential” legends of Porto. Lets explore this place deeply connected with the Douro River, with the naval construction, also with the jews, so in each step you can find stories, legends, places related with such ancient relation and identity. Join us and come find some of them.

What´s Porto patron saint (and perhaps it´s actually not S.João), where´s (or was) Rua dos Banhos or Rua do Ouro - that actually don´t longer exist, the “bloody” legend of “Gaia”, where was the jewish cemetery, what´s the “Bandeirinha da Saúde”, the dolphin that looks like … anything but a dolphin, among many other relevant aspects of Porto and Portugal history, culture, society and ecology.

Thank you to all the folks that joined us in this adventure and support the Project. Next month (October) we should have an APSCS – Academy of Portuguese Socio Cultural Studies Session and we will return to the Tours (Tour in this case) in November. Probably a quite “fresh” one.

APSCS - Academy of Portuguese Social-Cultural Studies sessions and the Slow Motion Tours... Tours.

Dear APSCS Students, Slow Motion Tours friends and Slow Motion Tours friends that are also APSCS Students:

As you might now, last year (School Year ;O) finally, after a long process of “germination” and “preparation”, Slow Motion Tours started the APSCS - Academy of Portuguese Social-Cultural Studies sessions. Which means that, besides that Ecossocial Tours that we already organise, we started dealing with all the work that it demands to communicate and preparate an APSCS session.
Slow Motion Tours is “just” one of the several Projects that I´m already involved or responsible for. With this new responsability the level of work required increased in very significant. Basically it meant to be responsible for preparing, organising and managing two activities each month.
Also in what relates to the Slow Motion Tours, we started a process of redesigning our Tours and even some of the dinamics in which they happen.
So, all of that together with my main work at the Institution, my Capoeira lessons, my Ecological and Self Development activities, Projects, Responsabilities, together with the proper time, energy, focus needed to be also a good and a present father and so on... and still also being able to offer my self good moments of relax and pure joy (normally in connection with the Nature) the reality became extremelly demanding.

So, in the process of trying to live my self in the most possible “Slow” and also sustainable way, the main purpose of this text is to inform our dear Friends, Students, Community somehow, that the Ecossocial Tours and the APSCS Sessions will start happening with an alternating dinamics. Which means that one month we will do one and the next month the other. So each one of them will be really special, or even more special, since there will be a longer and deeper process of preparation related to each of them.
Even more motivated and excited for this new stage of the Project(s) and, most important, looking forward to meet you again soon in the activities!
