ECREA Radio and Sound Section

The Radio and Sound is a thematic section part of ECREA. It will create a radio community and initiate academic dialogue on the future of radio.

The Radio and Sound Section will provide opportunities for the international exchange of information and collaboration across disciplines within the field of communication focusing on radio. The section will assist members in developing their work through conferences, publications and by promoting dialogue among members. This level of interaction will assist members in finding partners and in developing international research projects.

We look forward to welcoming researchers and professionals to continue exploring the transformations, challenges and opportunities shaping radio and sound in contemporary media ecosystems.

🏆🎙️ Guy Starkey Prize for the Most Original Presentation 🎙️🏆

We are delighted to announce that the Guy Starkey Prize for the Most Original Presentation at the 8th ECREA Radio and Sound Conference (Sheffield, 8–9 September 2025) has been awarded to Abdullah Yelken (Bilgi University, Istanbul).

His paper, “From Sonic Heritage to Individual Soundmaps: Negotiating Urban Belonging in Istanbul’s Soundscapes”, impressed the jury with its originality, innovative approach, and contribution to the field of radio and sound studies.

The Radio and Sound Section of ECREA is delighted to announce that Professor Caroline Mitchell (University of Sunderland) has been awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Radio and Sound Studies Award.

This recognition is presented at the 8th ECREA Radio and Sound Conference (Sheffield, 8–9 September 2025) in honor of her pioneering scholarship, academic leadership, and lasting impact on the field of radio and sound studies.

👩‍🏫 About Prof. Lindgren:
• Leading international podcast researcher
• Adjunct Professor at RMIT University and University of Tasmania
• Former Dean of Social Sciences, Media, Film and Education (Swinburne University, 2019–2022)
• Founding Head of School of Media, Film and Journalism (Monash University, 2014–2018)
• Associate Dean Research, College of Arts, Law and Education, UTAS (2022–2025)
• Co-editor of The Routledge Companion to Radio and Podcast Studies (2022)
• Co-editor of Radio Journal: International Studies in Broadcast and Audio Media

Her research, funded by national competitive grants, focuses on audio storytelling in public health, developed through podcasts, documentaries, and media partnerships.

🌍🎙️ Meet the YECREA Representatives for the ECREA Radio & Sound Section! 🎧✨

We’re thrilled to introduce Ana Sofia Paiva and Neval Turhalli, two outstanding researchers bringing fresh perspectives to the field of radio and sound studies.

🔹 Ana Sofia Paiva is a Ph.D. student at NOVA University of Lisbon. Her research explores audio innovation in public radio, media labs, and audio journalism. She is part of the NOVA Institute of Communication (ICNOVA/NOVA FCSH) and the Media Innovation Observatory (Obi.Media).

🔹 Neval Turhalli ( ) holds degrees in Psychology, Film & Television, and a Master’s in New Media. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), focusing on the distribution of music on digital streaming platforms in Spain and its impact on gatekeeping roles.

We look forward to their contributions to the YECREA and ECREA communities! Stay tuned for exciting discussions and collaborations. 🎙️📡
