On December 10, 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, marking a landmark achievement for human rights.
From the right to education to equal pay, the UDHR established for the first time the indivisible and inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being, regardless of race, colour, s*x, language, religion, political or other opinions, national or social origin, property, birth, or another status.
As a tribute to this milestone, every year on December 10th, Human Rights Day is celebrated, reminding the international community of the importance of taking action to uphold and promote human rights.
On the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Human Rights Day focuses on the unceasing effort for “Freedom, Equality, and Justice for All”. Despite important steps forward since the UDHR’s adoption, recognizing and guaranteeing these fundamental values remains a constant challenge.
Especially today, more than ever, when approximately 80% of the world’s population lives in countries or territories rated as Not Free or Partially Free by Freedom House reports and anti-democratic regimes are preventing billions of people from exercising their fundamental rights, we must join the fight for human rights, in respect of our vision to a just world where respect for human dignity and cultural diversity prevails.
