On our coastal snorkelling expeditions participants contribute directly to our Coastal Survey Project, documenting certain key species like Octopuses, Nudibranchs, Turtles, Slipper lobsters and Sea horses. Species composition and environmental parameters are recorded as well as distribution and abundance, all while comparing sites within and outside the marine protected areas. Above, an Octupus found around the Princess Ring Island, out of Vila Franca, Azores.

A closer look at the enormous nostrils of the Blue whale, known as blowholes, uniquely adapted for breathing in an aquatic environment and to the extraordinary metabolic oxygen demands.

Each blowhole is connected to the lungs via a short, wide airway and is sealed underwater by powerful muscular valves, being able to replace up to 80-90% of their air in their lungs in a single breath.

During our snorkel expeditions sometimes we cross with very special observations like this curious association between a black moray eel (Muraena augusti) and a blacktail comber (Serranus atricauda). Both animals were swimming together for a long time, being the blacktail comber the one that seemed to be following this young black moray eel.
