Amigos dos gatos da Rua - Penela, Portugal... Friends of the Street Cats of Penela, Portugal

In my little town of Penela, street cats are in abundance, some born on the street, many others are abandoned. Many suffer from starvation, injury, illness and abuse by Humans. There are no facilities in Penela for the care and/or protection of street cats or a sterilization program to control the over popuation of cats on the street. I have picked so many and ran with them to my vet. Some we lost because of their illness, some survived and at some point I adopted 10.

I know there are many good people in my town and around who love cats, who have opened their dorrs for cats to come in but cannot afford to adopt them, sterilie tem or provide them with the health care they require. So I am starting this association and introduce it to you, my friends, before I tackle the council and the Bureaucracy to set up the association. You can advise me, give me ideas, challenge me and I will take on board what you give then, perhaps add my own ideas, too, in the cauldren.

Basically, I would like to see the street cats of Penela happy and safe in their own environment by offering basic and humane help... Food to eat in feeding stations around the town, sterilization to control the population, shelter in different areas from the harsh weather, treatment for those injured, humane euthenisation for those who are terminally ill or with incurable diseases thet lead to great suffering, protecting pregnant cats and kittens.

Most feral cats love the outside world so those who are well can stay in their own environment but with a better quality of living conditions. Those that are very young or abandoned will require more help and attention... When I first came here I frequently heard people say “ cats can look after themselves”... From what I have seen and experienced, I think not!
