Cetus Project

Cetus Project The CETUS Project is a cetacean monitoring programme based at CIIMAR 🐳🔍

CETUS Project started in 2012, with the aim of collecting cetacean occurrence data in the Eastern North Atlantic to study their distribution and habitat. At the moment, it is constituted by a small team of young researchers, each of them specialising in a topic of cetacean ecology but working together to produce integrated analyses and valuable results for cetacean conservation. Over time, CETUS P

roject has built solid collaborations from which they are eager to learn, apply their expertise in the CETUS study area, and investigate novel approaches to cetacean ecology. Within CETUS, the following monitoring activities are ongoing:

- Visual monitoring, along long-transect routes, onboard large vessels used as platforms of opportunity. This is possible thanks to CETUS collaborations with Transinsular (a Portuguese shipping company), the Hydrographic Institute of the Portuguese Navy, and the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere - IPMA. These collaborations allow the collection of cetacean occurrence data in a wide range area, between Mainland Portugal and the Macaronesian archipelagos, covering offshore waters.

- "Botos da Foz": a visual land-based monitoring programme at the mouth of Douro River (Porto, Portugal), in which the focus species is the endangered harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). The CETUS team also participates in dedicated cetacean monitoring campaigns, in the scope of the ATLANTIDA Project, during which data on cetacean occurrence, photo-ID, blow samples, biopsies, environmental DNA and acoustic recordings are collected off the northern coast of Continental Portugal. Furthermore, CETUS Project assumes an active role in environmental education by giving talks in schools and universities, organising cetacean-related workshops/courses, supervising students (bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees) and integrating them in monitoring activities, providing hands-on experience to the interns.

[EN] During yesterday's Ciimar Watch campaign, we spotted common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), including a newborn calf! Those stripes you see in the first photo? They're called neonatal folds, marks left from being curled up in the womb 🐬

We also had harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) sightings. Living up to their reputation, they chose to remain mysterious guests this time 👀 No photos, but trust us... they were there 😅

[EN] We were proud to have presented three short talks at the 37th European Cetacean Society Conference in Dundee, Scotland 🌊🐬

Three completely different perspectives on the challenges of marine mammal conservation:

🔹 Out of sight, out of mind: Scientific effort remaining focused on inshore habitats hinders effective conservation of marine mammal populations - Ana Mafalda Correia

🔹 Natural vs. anthropogenic contamination: Organobromine compounds in distinct ecological populations of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) - Raul Valente

🔹 Patterns of seasonality, circadian rhythms, and behaviour of the critically endangered Iberian harbour porpoise - Cláudia Rodrigues

Grateful to be part of such a dedicated and inspiring scientific community 💙

[EN] Today, our team member Luís Afonso presented his collaborative work with Instituto Español de Oceanografía - IEO under Emphatic Project at the “Second Workshop on Environmental DNA for Monitoring and Ecological Studies of Marine Mammals” at the 37th European Cetacean Society Conference. 🌊🐋

His presentation focused on evaluating different methods in eDNA metabarcoding workflow for marine vertebrate monitoring, highlighting how innovative eDNA approaches can strengthen our ability to track biodiversity and better understand marine ecosystems.

Thank you Dr Simon Goodman (School of Biology, University of Leeds), Dr Elena Valsecchi (Department of Environmental and Earth Sciences, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca) and Dr Bettina Thalinger (Department of Zoology, Universität Innsbruck) for organising this workshop.

[EN] Today, CETUS was proud to host the workshop “Losing genes: deciphering the mechanisms behind gene loss in cetaceans” 🧬🐋 at the 37th European Cetacean Society Conference.

Organized by our team members Raul Valente and Nádia Artilheiro, in collaboration with Filipe Castro, PI of the Animal Genetics and Evolution group at Ciimar, this session explored how gene loss shapes adaptation in cetaceans as they transitioned from land to aquatic life.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us this morning and contributed to such an engaging session!

[EN] We’re excited to share our latest article on cetacean mitochondrial genomic data and its global coverage gaps 🐋

This work, led by Luís Afonso as part of his PhD research, provides the first global assessment of mitochondrial sequence availability for cetaceans, an essential resource for molecular tools like eDNA. Our results reveal significant biases, such as

• Strong overrepresentation of some families (e.g., Delphinidae, Balaenopteridae)
• Major gaps in others, particularly deep-diving groups like Ziphiidae
• Limited geographic metadata across records
