🇵🇹 No passado dia 12 de setembro, percorremos novamente o concelho de Belmonte, com o apoio do CERVAS, do Município de Belmonte, da Junta de Freguesia de Maçainhas e da Junta de Freguesia de Inguias, à procura das aves que habitam este território. Entre aldeias, campos agrícolas, linhas de água, charcas e miradouros, conseguimos observar 52 espécies de aves, proporcionando aos participantes uma nova oportunidade para conhecer e valorizar o património natural de Belmonte e, simultaneamente, contribuindo para aprofundar o conhecimento sobre a ocorrência destas espécies no território.

🇬🇧 On 12 September, we once again explored the municipality of Belmonte, with the support of CERVAS, Belmonte Municipal Council, the Maçainhas Parish Council and the Inguias Parish Council, in search of the birds that inhabit this area. Amidst villages, farmland, watercourses, ponds and viewpoints, we managed to observe 52 species of birds, giving participants a fresh opportunity to discover and appreciate Belmonte’s natural heritage whilst, at the same time, helping to deepen our understanding of the occurrence of these species in the area.

🇵🇹 A paisagem da Estrela guarda nela traços de uma identidade antiquíssima, sulcados pelas mãos de homens e mulheres que, de cajado na mão e pés assentes nas rochas desta Montanha, percorreram a Estrela vezes sem conta. Ora subiam ora desciam a Montanha. À frente o fiel companheiro e protetor, o cão Serra da Estrela, que fazia a escolta a um numeroso rebanho que dava cor e som às encostas desta serra. Durante séculos a pastorícia marcou o nosso quotidiano, moldou a paisagem e fez parte do seu ecossistema. Hoje, embora em número muito mais reduzido, continua a ser uma marca indelével do nosso património cultural e intangível. Preservar esta atividade é contribuir para uma paisagem mais diversa e culturalmente mais rica, é preservar o nosso legado comum!

🇬🇧 The landscape of the Estrela holds within it traces of an ancient identity, shaped by the hands of men and women who, staff in hand and feet planted firmly on the rocks of this mountain, traversed the Estrela countless times. At times they climbed the Mountain, at another they came down. Leading the way was their faithful companion and protector, the Serra da Estrela dog, which guarded a large flock that brought colour and sound to the slopes of this mountain range. For centuries, sheep farming shaped our daily lives, moulded the landscape and formed part of its ecosystem. Today, although their numbers are much smaller, it remains an indelible part of our cultural and intangible heritage. Preserving this activity means contributing to a more diverse and culturally richer landscape, it means preserving our shared legacy!

🇵🇹 As cascalheiras são depósitos rochosos, constituídos por rocha exposta e solta, fragmentada na última idade do gelo. Apesar de aparentarem ser nada mais do que rocha, este habitat é um importante refúgio para espécies de flora de montanha, com destaque a 𝘚𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘥𝘢 subsp. 𝘧𝘰𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘥𝘢, um endemismo lusitano. Fauna de pequeno porte, como a lagartixa-da-montanha (𝘐𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘢 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘢 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘢), também tira proveito das fendas para se abrigarem de ameaças. As cascalheiras não têm sofrido grandes alterações por parte de fenómenos naturais, sendo a sua principal ameaça a construção de vias rodoviárias na sua base.

🇬🇧 The screes are rocky deposits consisting of loose, exposed rock that was fragmented during the last Ice Age. Although they may appear to be nothing more than bare rock, this habitat provides an important refuge for species of mountain flora, notably the Portuguese endemic 𝘚𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘥𝘢 subsp. 𝘧𝘰𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘥𝘢. Small fauna, such as the Iberian mountain lizard (𝘐𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘢 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘢 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘢), also use the crevices for shelter from threats. The screes have not undergone significant changes due to natural phenomena because their main threat is the construction of roads at their base.

🇵🇹 Com 201 espécies registadas, a avifauna é o grupo de macrofauna com maior representação na Estrela Reserva da Biosfera UNESCO. Entre as espécies registadas, 75 são residentes às quais se juntam as espécies estivais, invernantes e as migradoras. A serra da Estrela abriga aves típicas de montanha e diversas aves de rapina, muitas das quais apresentam estatuto de conservação desfavorável a nível nacional e europeu. A conservação da natureza e do nosso território é essencial para a proteção deste grupo e do equilíbrio dos ecossistemas da nossa Estrela.

🇬🇧 With 201 reported species, birds are the most numerous group of macrofauna in the Estrela UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Of the recorded species, 75 are resident, summer, wintering and migratory species. Serra da Estrela is home to typical mountain birds and various birds of prey, many of which have an unfavourable conservation status at both national and european level. Preserving nature and our territory is essential for the protection of this group and for maintaining the balance of the ecosystems in our Estrela.

🇵🇹 Conhecer o território é aproximarmo-nos dele, descobri-lo, valorizá-lo e senti-lo como nosso. Com este mote, no próximo dia 17 de outubro, vamos voltar a caminhar pelos Passadiços do Mondego, numa iniciativa do ESTRELA, Geopark Mundial da UNESCO e Reserva da Biosfera da UNESCO, em parceria com o Município da Guarda e com o La Vie Guarda. Ao longo dos 12 km, levamos o conhecimento mais perto das nossas comunidades e de quem nos visita, partilhando a riqueza natural, cultural e paisagística que torna este território único. Junta-te a nós e vem caminhar, descobrir e valorizar este património connosco.

🇬🇧 Getting to know the area means drawing closer to it, discovering it, appreciating it and feeling it as our own. With this in mind, on October 17th, we will once again be walking along the Mondego Boardwalks, as part of an initiative organised by ESTRELA, a UNESCO Global Geopark and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, in partnership with Guarda Municipal Council and La Vie Guarda. Over the course of the 12 km, we’ll bring knowledge closer to our communities and to those who visit us, sharing the natural, cultural and scenic riches that make this area unique. 🇵🇹 No dia 6 de setembro dinamizámos uma atividade com investigadores do FAST do Centre for Functional Ecology - Science for People & the Planet da Universidade de Coimbra. O dia iniciou-se com uma visita ao parceiro Bee Serra da Estrela, onde conversámos sobre práticas de agricultura sustentável e sistemas agroflorestais, soluções fundamentais para responder aos desafios das alterações climáticas e às transformações da sociedade. A tarde foi passada nas Penhas Douradas onde, durante um percurso pedestre, demos a conhecer a geodiversidade, a biodiversidade e cultura da ESTRELA, Geopark Mundial da UNESCO e Reserva da Biosfera da UNESCO.

🇬🇧 On September 6th, we organized an activity with researchers from FAST from Center for Functional Ecology at the University of Coimbra. The day began with a visit to our partner, Bee Serra da Estrela, where we discussed sustainable farming practices and agroforestry systems, key solutions for addressing the challenges of climate change and societal transformation. The afternoon was spent in Penhas Douradas, where, during a hike, we explored the geodiversity, biodiversity, and culture of ESTRELA, a UNESCO Global Geopark and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

🇵🇹 Companheiro do ser humano há dezenas de milhares de anos, o cão terá sido domesticado a partir de um ancestral comum com o lobo e, ao longo do tempo, selecionado para desempenhar diferentes funções de acordo com as necessidades das comunidades. Na serra da Estrela, a utilização tradicional dos cães na proteção dos rebanhos deu origem a uma raça especialmente adaptada às condições da Montanha. O Cão Serra da Estrela distingue-se pelo porte robusto, resistência e comportamento territorial, características fundamentais para proteger os rebanhos da presença de predadores, particularmente o lobo. Mais do que um animal de trabalho, é parte integrante da história, da cultura e dos modos de vida das comunidades da Estrela. Por isso, o Dia Mundial do Cão Serra da Estrela, celebrado a 8 de setembro, é também uma oportunidade para valorizar este património biocultural da Estrela Reserva da Biosfera da UNESCO.

🇬🇧 The dog has been a companion to humans for tens of thousands of years. It is thought to have been domesticated from a common ancestor with the wolf, and over time it has been bred to perform different roles according to the needs of communities. In the Serra da Estrela region, the traditional use of dogs to protect flocks has given rise to a breed that is particularly well-suited to the mountain environment. The Serra da Estrela dog is distinguished by its robust build, endurance, and territorial behaviour, characteristics that are essential for protecting flocks from predators, particularly wolves. It is not just a working animal; it is also an integral part of the history, culture and way of life of the Serra da Estrela communities. World Serra da Estrela Dog Day, celebrated on 8 September, therefore provides an opportunity to celebrate the Estrela UNESCO Biosphere Reserve's biocultural heritage.

🇵🇹 A Zona de Transição da Estrela Reserva da Biosfera da UNESCO corresponde à área em torno da Zona Tampão e é onde se concentram os principais aglomerados urbanos e sedes de concelho. Na Estrela, esta área foi delimitada de acordo com os limites dos municípios de Celorico da Beira, Covilhã, Gouveia, Guarda, Manteigas e Seia e corresponde a 62% da área total da Reserva da Biosfera. É aqui que vive maior parte da população e se desenvolvem atividades cruciais para o desenvolvimento do território, como a agricultura, a indústria e o turismo. Intrínseco à sua designação, esta área serve de transição entre os ambientes semi-naturais e as zonas agrícolas e urbanizadas, garantido que o desenvolvimento socioeconómico ocorre em equilíbrio com conservação dos valores naturais da Estrela.

🇬🇧 The Transition Zone of the Estrela Biosphere Reserve corresponds to the area surrounding the Buffer Zone and is where the main urban centers and municipality seats are concentrated. In Estrela, this area was defined according to the boundaries of the municipalities of Celorico da Beira, Covilhã, Gouveia, Guarda, Manteigas, and Seia, accounting for 62% of the Biosphere Reserve's total area. It is home to most of the population and where activities crucial to the territory's development, such as agriculture, industry, and tourism, take place. Intrinsic to its designation, this area serves as a transition between semi-natural environments and agricultural and urbanized areas, ensuring that socioeconomic development occurs in balance with the conservation of Estrela's natural heritage.

🇵🇹 Os azereirais são bosques dominados pelo azereiro (𝘗𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢 subsp. 𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢), uma planta autóctone que cresce em vales húmidos e sombrios. Normalmente, ocorrem junto a linhas de água, pelo que podem ser encontrados pequenos núcleos deste habitat ao longo das margens do rio Alva, bem como na região sul do município de Seia. Além de estabilizarem os solos e fornecerem alimento e abrigo à fauna, estes bosques constituem um importante refúgio para as espécies relíquia, pertencentes às antigas florestas laurissilva. Hoje em dia, os incêndios, as espécies invasoras e a colheita ilegal de exemplares ameaçam a sua conservação, sendo fundamental a proteção destas relíquias da Natureza!

🇬🇧 Portuguese laurel woods, as the name suggests, are areas dominated by the portuguese laurel (𝘗𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢 subsp. 𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢), an autochthonous plant found in shaded and humid valleys. They are frequently found closer to rivers, such as Alva, and on the south side of Seia municipality in the form of small and fragmented patches. They fixate soil and are solid food source for birds and small mammals, but more importantly, they serve as a biodiversity haven for relict species, such as the portuguese laurel. As of today, wildfires, exotic invasive species and illegal harvest of individuals are a threat for the conservation of this natural ancient species!

🇵🇹 A designação da Serra da Estrela como Reserva da Biosfera esteve em destaque no Jornal da Noite da TVI. A jornalista Andreia Marques deu a conhecer um território que agora detém dois selos UNESCO e realçou a algumas das tradições que se complementam e fortalecem a ligação ao território: da pastorícia à produção do queijo e do burel, da água que é captada para consumo à que move moinhos, do centeio ao pão e da agricultura à gastronomia que faz a delícia dos locais e de quem nos visita. 🇬🇧 The designation of Serra da Estrela as a Biosphere Reserve was featured on TVI’s Jornal Nacional. Journalist Andreia Marques presented a territory that now holds two UNESCO designations and highlighted some of the traditions that complement one another and strengthen the connection to the territory: from pastoralism to the production of cheese and burel, from the water collected for drinking to the water that powers the mills, from rye to bread, and from agriculture to the gastronomy that delights both locals and visitors.
