📹 Horizon VET – Personalization and the future of learning

In Episode 2 of the Horizon VET series, James Calleja, President of EfVET, highlights a key shift for vocational education: connecting with Gen Z as individuals, not just as cohorts.

He emphasizes that personalisation — supported by AI — can transform both teaching and learning, benefiting educators as much as students and helping VET systems stay relevant in a rapidly changing labour market.

💡 For initiatives like WIN-WIN, the message is clear: flexible, learner-centered pathways and smart use of technology are essential to prepare future talent.

🔮 Preparing for 2040: What could the future of skills development look like?

A new foresight study from Cedefop explores four AI-powered scenarios that imagine how continuing skills development might evolve by 2040 — and what this means for learners, workers, and education providers.

🌍 The study highlights that artificial intelligence is likely to be the most influential — and unpredictable — force shaping skills systems, interacting with trends such as demographic change, climate transition, and evolving labour markets. ()

Rather than predictions, the scenarios are tools to help policymakers and practitioners reflect on opportunities, risks, and priorities — from futures where AI boosts inclusion and human potential to those where inequality and job precarity increase. ()

💡 The key message: the future of learning will depend on the choices we make today — especially around lifelong learning, reskilling, and inclusive skills ecosystems.

At WIN-WIN, these insights reinforce the importance of designing flexible, forward-looking pathways that keep people at the centre of innovation.

📘 WIN-WIN Glossary spotlight!

What do we mean when we talk about skills mismatch and work-based learning (WBL)?

🔑 Skills mismatch happens when the skills people gain in education don’t fully align with what employers need. This gap can lead to unemployment, underemployment or shortages in key sectors. Through pathway innovation, the WIN-WIN project works to reduce this gap and create better opportunities for learners.

🔑 Work-based learning (WBL) combines structured learning with real workplace experience — such as apprenticeships, internships, and dual training. By immersing learners in real job environments, WBL strengthens employability and helps develop relevant, up-to-date skills.

At WIN-WIN, we are committed to building innovative educational pathways that connect learning with real labour market needs.

From Need to Training:
IPTrans & Falck – an example of the link between business and training providers

Closer cooperation between the business sector and training providers is essential to ensure effective responses to the real needs of the labour market. The partnership between IPTrans and Falck, a leading company in the field of emergency response, rescue and healthcare services, is a clear example of how this win-win relationship adds value for all those involved — companies, schools and, above all, students.

It was precisely the identification of specific sector needs that led Falck to approach IPTrans, challenging the school to offer the Aerodrome Emergency and Rescue Technician course. This initiative reflects the company’s confidence in IPTrans’ ability to develop training solutions that are aligned with professional realities and the technical demands of emergency services in an airport context.

In addition to collaborating on the technical training component of the course, Falck will host students for their Work-Based Learning placement, actively contributing to their professional preparation. In a real working environment, students have the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom, develop specific technical skills and strengthen essential transferable skills such as teamwork, responsibility and the ability to perform under pressure.

From the company’s perspective, this partnership represents a strategic opportunity: to engage with new talent, contribute to defining professional profiles better suited to the sector, and support training that is more closely aligned with labour market needs.

At a time when employability and the relevance of qualifications remain ongoing challenges, partnerships such as the one established between IPTrans and Falck highlight the importance of a win-win relationship. Investing in training is investing in the future — better prepared young people, more qualified companies, and a labour market that is more sustainable and better connected to reality.

How IPTrans Works with Companies to Prepare Students for the Labour Market

The link between schools and companies is essential to ensure that training responds to the real needs of the labour market. At IPTrans, this collaboration plays a central role, promoting a win-win relationship in which everyone benefits — companies, students and the school itself.

According to IPTrans’ Pedagogical Director, Ana Teixeira: “IPTrans establishes and maintains links with companies through a close, ongoing and strategic relationship, ensuring that work-based learning responds to the real needs of the labour market. We seek to involve companies in defining technical and behavioural skills, as well as in identifying sector trends, adjusting professional profiles and teaching methods whenever necessary.”

During Work-Based Learning (WBL), students come into direct contact with the professional reality, allowing them to apply the knowledge they have acquired and to develop skills valued by the labour market, such as responsibility, teamwork, autonomy and the ability to adapt to different professional environments. As highlighted by the Pedagogical Director, “collaboration with companies is fundamental to the quality of training and to our students’ employability. In many cases, work placements themselves open the door to employment opportunities.”

Companies are also active partners in monitoring and assessing students: “They are responsible for welcoming and integrating the student, providing daily guidance through tutors or supervisors, and offering continuous feedback on technical and behavioural skills, ensuring that work-based learning is realistic, rigorous and aligned with professional requirements,” adds the Pedagogical Director.

This approach reinforces IPTrans’ commitment to practical, up-to-date and employability-oriented training, preparing students to enter the labour market with concrete skills and real-world experience.

Best Practices in VET–Business Collaboration: Siemens Portugal

🌟 Siemens Portugal invests in hands-on learning to train professionals ready for the future!

In response to rapid technological change and the growing demand for Industry 4.0 skills, Siemens Portugal has established a structured collaboration with vocational education and training (VET) institutions, integrating work-based learning into educational pathways.

💡 How it works:
• Students take part in alternating programmes, combining theoretical classes with practical training in companies;
• They are supported by Siemens technical mentors, who guide the application of skills in real industrial environments;
• VET institutions define learning objectives jointly with Siemens, ensuring that training content reflects real industry needs;
• Students gain access to advanced technologies and develop both technical and transferable skills in areas such as automation, electrical engineering, digital systems and industrial processes.

🚀 Impact:
• Trainees acquire practical experience and skills that are highly valued in the labour market;
• The transition from education to employment is facilitated, including recruitment opportunities within Siemens and related sectors;
• For Siemens, this approach helps build a pool of qualified talent already familiar with the company’s processes and technologies.

🌍 Transferability:
This approach demonstrates that structured cooperation between companies and VET institutions goes far beyond short-term internships and can be replicated in other sectors and countries, particularly those requiring training in advanced technologies.

The Importance of VET-Business Collaboration

💡 Why is it important for schools and companies to work together?
Collaboration between vocational education and training (VET) and businesses is essential to prepare professionals ready for the labor market. When schools and companies connect:
✔️ Trainees apply knowledge in real-world situations;
✔️ Companies help guide training content according to sector needs;
✔️ Young people develop both technical and socio-emotional skills valued in the job market;
✔️ The transition from training to employment becomes faster and more effective;
✔️ Innovation and competitiveness are promoted in both companies and educational institutions.

The WIN WIN project invests in this collaboration as a catalyst for sustainable development and employability, showing that the partnership between education and industry creates value for everyone.
