I love what I’ve built with Black in Portugal. But somewhere along the way, I forgot to make room for myself. 🌿

After a few weeks of being quiet, I’m finally ready to share why I stepped away.

Sometimes taking a break gives you the clarity you didn’t even realize you needed.

A lot has been happening behind the scenes, both personally and with Black in Portugal, and I’m opening up about it in my latest Substack article.

A little reflection, some life updates, and a look at what’s coming next. ❤️

What if “eat healthier” isn’t actually good enough advice?

For Chanel Wilson, nutrition isn’t just about what people choose to eat—it’s about what they can actually access.
From Lisbon to Birmingham, she’s turning her Jamaican roots in holistic wellness into work around nutrition equity, community education, and healthier choices that are actually within reach.

Because healthy living shouldn’t be a luxury.

You build a bigger room.

You probably weren’t expecting to find THIS in Évora.

Tucked inside the historic city is Rift Snack Bar —an African spot bringing flavors from Cape Verde, Angola, Mozambique, São Tomé, Guiné-Bissau and beyond to one table.

Fried plantain. Cape Verdean pastries. Angolan franguité. Cassava. Hibiscus. Baobab. And even Cuca b**r. 🤤

But the food is only part of the story.

Soraya Silá and her husband created Rift to celebrate African culture, challenge the way Africa is often represented, and give the diaspora a little piece of home in Évora.

Portugal turns 5 today. So do I, in a way. I just turned 40.

I asked the consulate to move my visa date years ago just so I’d land in Portugal on my birthday. What I didn’t know then was everything that first year would ask of me, and everything it would give back.

The full story, the hard parts and all, is up now. Link in bio.

What happens when you stop looking for a place where you fit in?

After Portugal, Anna moved to Thailand—not looking for community, but looking for herself.

No familiar language. No Black community where she lives. No cultural mirror reflecting back who she was supposed to be.

And somewhere in that absence, she began discovering something deeper.

Accepted, but never fully understood.

Finding a home in Portugal is stressful enough. Finding someone you can actually trust shouldn’t be.
For years, I’ve watched the same question come up in our community:

“Does anyone know a good realtor?”

So we finally put the answers in one place.

Sometimes community starts with one conversation.

A language exchange.

A shared meal.

A stranger who doesn’t feel like one for very long.

What began as a small meetup between people from across the African diaspora has grown into INCADI—an organization creating spaces for connection, culture, and opportunity in Lisbon.

Because when the language barrier comes down, community has room to grow.

🖤 Tag someone who’s looking for community in Portugal.

Black men carry a lot.

But where do they get to put it down?

Victor Santos wasn’t trying to start a men’s circle.

He was simply looking for community.

What he found was a gap—and the opportunity to create a space where Black men in Lisbon could be seen, heard, and supported.

Because sometimes the strongest thing you can do is speak out loud.

🖤 Tag a Black man who needs to know about this.
