Light can draw us closer. It can also ask us to look with care.

For artist and researcher M. Arantza Gaztañaga Garabieta, living with uncontrolled epilepsy shapes a deeply personal exploration of light, vision and vulnerability — a visual language in which beauty, risk and creativity coexist.

Based at the University of the Basque Country and currently collaborating with the University of Madeira, Gaztañaga is exhibiting in ISLANDS.2026 — SOIL & TERRA at Art Center Caravel Art Center Caravel

Thank you to everyone who applied for Creative Maps — The Arts Are Hiring, wrote to us, asked questions and shared the opportunity. We’ve loved hearing about your work and why you’d like to join us in Madeira.

We’re reviewing the applications and will contact selected participants with the next steps.

🌍 CAN NUMBERS LIE? LET’S FIND OUT IN MADEIRA!

From 2–9 November, Madeira will welcome 16 seniors from Poland and Portugal to explore how numbers, statistics and climate information shape the way we see the world.

Through “From Numbers to Evidence”, a creative learning laboratory, we’ll question graphs, challenge misinformation and discover why critical thinking matters at every age.

This is our next adventure within “Od liczb do klimatu” (From Numbers to Climate), an Erasmus+ project developed with our Polish partner Fundacja Inthinknity and local collaboration with Sociohabitafunchal, E.M.

Because learning never gets old! 🌿

🇵🇹✈️ Heading home with new ideas, fresh perspectives and wonderful connections!

Our first training on Peace Education and Reconciliation has come to an end, but the journey of Roads and Routes continues !

The Portuguese ARTE.M team became even stronger with the participation of our wonderful partners from UMAR Madeira UMAR Madeira and Fortes Sempre Associação Fortes Sempre 💛

A big thank you to our partners from Estonia 🇪🇪, 🇮🇪 Ireland, 🇫🇮 Finland and 🇺🇦 Ukraine — and especially to our fantastic Finnish hosts for bringing us all together!

Different countries, different experiences, and plenty of conversations worth continuing.

A new creative soul has joined the ARTE.M team — Noémi Zelenák Nozo from Budapest. 🌿

Fresh from her Master’s in Fine Arts, Noémi works with painting, sculpture, textiles and large-scale crochet installations. She has taught art, painted murals in children’s hospitals and worked as a set sculptor and painter on Dune: Part Three.

She also has a black cat named Behemoth — after The Master and Margarita. 🖤

“I came to Madeira on my own to step outside my comfort zone, discover a completely new place and become more confident. I’m naturally curious and always ready for an adventure.”

SOIL & TERRA — Where does an island begin?
With soil? With stone? Or perhaps with fire beneath the ocean?

For the ISLANDS.2026 — SOIL & TERRA exhibition artist Liz Marie de Abreu Lize-Mari De Abreu created a series of works using Madeira’s volcanic sand — taking us back to the island’s very origins, born from volcanic activity rising from the Atlantic.
And then there are the whales.
They belong to the ocean, yet their story is inseparable from the land. They migrate past our shores, connecting territories and reminding us that an island is a living space where land and ocean constantly meet.
This connection gives the installation another dimension: it is also part of the Whale Festival by WHA Madeira Madeira Whale Fest . Visit us this Friday and Saturday, from 11:00 to 17:00, as part of the festival.
The installation is part of our Soil & Soul initiative , inspired by the SoilTribe SoilTribes project and its exploration of our relationship with soil, place and belonging.

🇬🇧 HURRAY! Our first day in Greece at the Craft Academy — Exploring Sustainable Jewellery Making! 🇬🇷✨
Diana D\BACKYARDD and Anita Roods meet again! ❤️ Our wonderful craft duo from Portugal and Romania continues their creative collaboration within the Craftwork4All Craftwork 4.0 All project — exchanging ideas, experimenting with materials and, of course, creating together.
A huge thank you to our host CUBE cube_nonprofitorganisation for such a great event and warm welcome!
And this is only Day 1… We’ve just started, and there is so much more ahead! 🔨💍♻️

🧵 A plataforma europeia Craftwork4.0All abriu a terceira ronda de mobilidades de dez dias para profissionais do artesanato e organizações de acolhimento dos países participantes no Programa Europa Criativa.

🌍 As mobilidades decorrem entre 1 de Novembro de 2026 e 31 de Outubro de 2027 e têm como objectivo promover a troca de conhecimentos, a aprendizagem entre pares e a criação conjunta de uma peça de artesanato.

🤝 Podem candidatar-se organizações de acolhimento estabelecidas nos países participantes no Programa Europa Criativa. Existem também oportunidades para profissionais do artesanato da Croácia, França, Irlanda, Itália, Portugal, Sérvia, Eslováquia, Eslovénia, Espanha e Suécia.

✈️ Cada mobilidade tem uma duração de dez dias, incluindo o fim de semana, acrescidos de dois dias de viagem. O apoio financeiro cobre viagens, alojamento e subsistência diária dos profissionais selecionados.

💶 As organizações de acolhimento podem receber até 400 euros para despesas com materiais necessários à criação conjunta, mediante as condições previstas no acordo escrito.

🌱 A selecção terá em conta a clareza e a viabilidade do plano de criação conjunta, os benefícios para os participantes e a integração de aspectos relacionados com a sustentabilidade. O programa incentiva especialmente profissionais em início de carreira e criadores emergentes.

⏳ Prazo de submissão: 31 de Outubro de 2026

👌 A Craft Work4.0All, co-financiada pelo Europa Criativa, é uma plataforma internacional que congrega 12 organizações de 12 países europeus que apoiam novos e emergentes artistas e profissionais de artesanato, entre elas a portuguesa Arte.M - Cultural and Artistic Association.

Applications are open for the CRAFTWORK4.0ALL Craftwork 4.0 All Residency in Plovdiv OECON GROUP Bulgaria Bulgaria!

From 22 March to 4 April 2027, five emerging creators will explore textile techniques and couture design methods, reinterpreting traditional Bulgarian motifs in collaboration with Ivan Donev.

The programme also offers cross-cultural collaboration and direct industry exposure through TEXTAILOR EXPO and the festival.
