Vadia Boats

A boat restoration event and documentary arts project that showcases the maritime heritage of Madeira "Zona Velha - The Community and its Sea".

VADIA Boat Project is an initiative accepted by Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias to work for the month of June 2023 in the "Artist Residency" programme in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal. The project will gather elements from the community of the Old Town and compile them in a short video documentary, which will include the reconstruction of a traditional wooden Madeiran boat. The project recognises that there are less and less of these characteristic fishing boats, unique handbuilt pieces that tell the experiences of a people, which help preserve the cultural identity of this old fishing village.
