PLEASE READ this first before using our page to know our remit, standards, values and guarding against fake news and misinformation

Association Safe Communities Portugal is the only qualified Civil Protection Volunteer Organisation under Portuguese law, serving the international community resident here in Portugal , and visitors in the English language. We are also a utilidade pública declared by

the Council of Ministers in 2018. We provide news, information and advice for residents in Portugal and visitors to the country, not only of local news, but also any overseas news concerning major incidents on topics within our safety and security remit, which could affect residents travelling to those countries or who may have relatives and friends overseas who could be affected. Such news also reminds us all of the need to constantly work to create greater resilience for our communities in order to reduce the impact of disasters. Civil Protection

The country faces the risks of meteorological hazards, such as extreme temperatures, floods and droughts for example. We therefore officially work with the Portuguese government to help communicate key prevention and self protection measures and advice particularly for the international community here and residents. Standard of conduct

There are Facebook groups and pages which are abound with misleading information, provocative statements, argument, negativity and personal insults which is not helping during times of crisis and goes against our standards and values. This maybe a reflection of stressful times for many, which we understand, but we will not allow this on our page and such comments will be removed. The aim of our association and page is to provide information and guidance from official channels which helps people during these difficult times. This can take us quite a bit of research and time, especially when we are publishing this in English. It may take a few minutes to publish a piece of information, but an hour or more to prepare it. We are also there to answer, as far as we can, people’s questions, which again we need to research. When Facebook becomes full of opinions often bearing no relevance to the topic, this can result in long drawn out debates. This detracts from the topic and with long threads makes it more difficult for people to find the answers they really need. There are many Facebook groups where opinions and personal argument abound and Safe Communities Portugal is not one of them. The challenge for our administrators who have to deal with and try and answer the many questions we receive, is immense. Whereas the vast majority of our posts are for anyone to comment, taking the above into account, we occasionally limit comment when considered necessary in accordance with Facebook rules. Crime Prevention

Although Portugal is a safe place to live and visit there is, as in any country some crime. Portugal however, has one of the lowest crime rates in Europe. It is important however that residents do their part to assist the police in terms of crime prevention

🇬🇧🇵🇹 THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF EDINBURGH ARE VISITING PORTUGAL FROM 1 TO 3 JUNE 2026, TO MARK THE 640TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TREATY OF WINDSOR.

Signed in 1386, the Treaty of Windsor, cemented the oldest diplomatic alliance still in force.
The program begins in Lisbon with the opening of an exhibition at the Torre do Tombo National Archives dedicated to the historic treaty. It will be the first time since the signing of the document that the original copies in Portuguese and English will be presented side by side to the public.

During their visit to Lisbon, the Duke and Duchess have also visit the Jardim da Estrela where they were received by the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, followed by a ride on one of the city's traditional trams.

The first day of the visit concludes with a reception hosted by the British Embassy, dedicated to celebrating the ties between the Portuguese and British peoples. The meeting brings together representatives of the British community in Portugal and Portuguese partners involved in social, community, and innovation projects.

On June 2nd, for instance, the Duke visits St. Julian’s School (Carcavelos) he will tour the high school art rooms, where he will observe work being done by 9th-grade students in partnership with adults from the Cercica association, as part of a community engagement project. The program also includes meetings with members of the Portuguese Paralympic team, a visit to the school's rugby club training sessions, and the symbolic planting of an oak tree in the gardens of the principal's residence. The visit concludes with a meeting with students participating in the “Duke of Edinburgh Award” program, an international youth development initiative created by Prince Philip, his father.

WILL THE GENERAL STRIKE ON JUNE 3RD AFFECT FLIGHTS AND AIRPORT'S OPERATION?

Yes! Both ground operations and flight attendants and air traffic controllers will be affected. Check with your airline and expect baggage problems as well.

SITAVA (Union of Aviation and Airport Workers) was the first to announce its participation in the protest, and therefore strong participation is expected from all personnel responsible for ground operations at Portuguese airports.

Furthermore, SNPVAC (National Union of Civil Aviation Flight Personnel) also announced that its members voted in favor of joining the strike, stressing that with more than 500 flights scheduled for that day alone, disruptions will be inevitable. More recently, air traffic controllers also decided to join.

The disruptions have already been acknowledged by Portuguese carriers, including TAP, SATA, and Azores Airlines, for flights scheduled for June 3rd.

NATIONAL CORK OAK (SOBREIRO) DAY - JUNE 1ST

The cork oak (Quercus suber) was officially declared the national tree of Portugal in 2011.
Portugal marks National Cork Oak and Cork Day today, June 1st—a unique ecosystem that covers 22.3% of the national forest. Portugal has the world's largest area of cork oak forests, the "Montados de Sobro," recognized as some of the richest in biodiversity in Europe, serving as habitat for numerous endangered species.

Portugal is the world's largest producer of cork, representing about 46% of global production. The cork oak is widely represented in the Portuguese agroforestry landscape, with a greater presence in Ribatejo and Alentejo, occupying 720,000 hectares of the mainland territory, over 600 000 hectares are located in the Alentejo, where the agroforestry landscape known as ‘montado’ predominates. It supports an industry responsible for more than 1.1 billion euros in annual exports. It has 200 companies associated with APCOR, responsible for 85% of Portuguese exports.
Used since ancient times as a floating and sealing material — cork stoppers are still its best-known application — today cork has countless other uses, whether in civil construction (thermal and acoustic insulation), in footwear and fashion or even in the aerospace industry.

The cork oak is an evergreen, slow growing tree, which can live for more than two centuries and grow to a height of 25 metres.
The world's largest cork oak tree — the Whistling Cork Oak (Sobreiro Assobiador), 239 years old — is located in Águas de Moura, in the Alentejo region, and was distinguished in 2018 as the European Tree of the Year.

DECIR 2026 - FIREFIGHTING DEVICE ENTERS PHASE CHARLIE WITH REINFORCEMENT OF RESOURCES

Level Charlie of the Special Device for Combating Rural Fires (DECIR) comes into effect today.

According to National Operational Directive No. 2, approved by the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority, DECIR 2026 defines the coordination between the various civil protection agents, firefighters, security forces, aerial resources and other entities involved in the prevention, pre-suppression, suppression and rescue of rural fires.

TODAY THE METEOROLOGICAL SUMMER STARTS

To align the seasons better with how meteorological records were kept, METEOROLOGICAL SEASONS were created.
Each meteorological season is still three-months long, but unlike astronomical seasons, they start and end on exactly the same dates from year to year, and they align precisely with our calendar months.

Meteorological seasons are based on annual cycles of temperature and precipitation (unlike the astronomical seasons which are determined by the Earth's position in relation to the Sun) and are divided:
▶ Winter: December 1 to February 28 or February 29 (December, January and February)
▶ Spring: March 1 - May 31 (March, April & May)
▶ Summer: June 1st to August 31st (June, July and August)
▶ Autumn: September 1 to November 30 (September, October and November)

The meteorological summer starts and the weather in Mainland Portugal has been clearly of summer time. HAPPY SUMMER

FIRE WEATHER INDEX (FWI) (Right map):
The Fire Weather Index (FWI) is a model-based index used worldwide to estimate fire danger. It indicates intensity of potential fires by combining the rate of fire spread with the amount of fuel being consumed, taking into account temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, precipitation, drought conditions, fuel availability, vegetation characteristics and topography. ‘Critical’ fires are defined as those covering an area greater than 10,000 ha and are challenging to extinguish until air temperatures fall and precipitation increases. They are typically associated with ‘extreme’ fire danger, which is an FWI of over 50.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Because it indicates the intensity of fires and the rate of spread. The Fire weather index is used for general public information about fire danger conditions, and is an essential tool for firefighters (FWI tab)
TAKE CARE NOT TO START A FIRE.
