CinTurs is a multidisciplinary research unit that combines
knowledge and approaches from Human, Social and
Environmental Sciences to produce and transfer knowledge in Tourism and Hospitality. The mission of CinTurs is the development and transfer of knowledge towards the sustainable development of tourism destinations and their stakeholders’ well-being, strengthening the position of UALG as an international reference in the field.

📚 CinTurs Researcher Alexandra Gonçalves opens Teachers' Welcome Event in Portimão!

Alexandra Gonçalves, integrated researcher at CinTurs, in her role of Vice-President of CCDR Algarve, recently opened a welcome event for teachers in Portimão, organised by the Municipality of Portimão.

The event marked the beginning of a new academic year and provided an opportunity to recognise the important role teachers play in shaping future generations, encouraging critical thinking, and preparing students for the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

During the event, Alexandra Gonçalves highlighted the importance of quality education, knowledge, and skills development for the Algarve's sustainable future, reinforcing CCDR Algarve's commitment to supporting education and regional development.

🎙️ CinTurs Researcher Miguel Puig-Cabrera Featured on 90 Segundos de Ciência!

Miguel Puig-Cabrera, Integrated Researcher at CinTurs, recently participated in an episode of 90 Segundos de Ciência, a radio programme dedicated to showcasing scientific research carried out in Portugal.

The episode focused on the SmartVITATUR project, through which a team of researchers at the University of Algarve is exploring smart tourism best practices in Spain and how they could be applied in the Algarve.

This research highlights the importance of knowledge sharing and innovation in supporting the development of smarter tourism destinations.

Last week, the Faculty of Economics at the University of Algarve welcomed its new PhD students from around the world, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their academic journeys.

As part of the welcome session for students joining the PhD programmes in Tourism and Business and Management Sciences, CinTurs had the opportunity to introduce its research activities and the opportunities available within its scientific community.

The session was an opportunity to present CinTurs to the new doctoral students and highlight the importance of research, collaboration, and knowledge exchange throughout their academic journeys.

🎓 PhD Net Talks | YouCanToo Community: Mentorship Network – Empowering Women in Research

Join us on October 21 for the next PhD Net Talks webinar, featuring Dr. Hilal Akdemir, Researcher and Scientific Director at KIPT CoLAB and Founder of the YouCanToo Community.

This session will introduce YouCanToo Community, a global mentorship and networking platform that connects and supports women in research and academia, particularly early-career researchers and those facing challenges in accessing professional networks and academic guidance.

Participants will also have the opportunity to explore the platform through a live demonstration, including its one-to-one mentorship features and support for grant applications, scholarships, and CV preparation.

🤝 CinTurs Announces New Partnership with YouCanToo Community!

CinTurs and the CinTurs PhD Network are pleased to announce a new partnership with YouCanToo Community, a free, global peer-to-peer mentorship and networking platform dedicated to supporting women in academia and research.

A key focus of this collaboration is the Mentorship Network for Women in Academia, which helps women navigate academic careers, explore international opportunities, and overcome challenges related to academic mobility and access to professional networks.

Through one-to-one mentorship, career guidance, and knowledge exchange, the initiative offers support with academic applications, scholarships, funding opportunities, and professional development. It is particularly aimed at early-career researchers and women adapting to new academic and cultural environments.

🌍 This partnership reflects a shared commitment to creating a more inclusive and supportive research community, where women can build connections, gain confidence, and access opportunities for personal and academic growth.

🌍 CinTurs Researcher Luís Nobre Pereira Attends EMAC Fall Conference 2026!

From September 16 to 18, Luís Nobre Pereira, researcher at CinTurs, participated in the 17th EMAC Fall Conference, held at the University of Bremen, Germany.

Organised by the University's markstones institute, the conference brought together around 184 researchers from 30 countries under the theme “Mind the Gap – Marketing Relevance in a Technology-Driven World.”

The event provided an opportunity for researchers to exchange ideas and explore how marketing can remain relevant in an increasingly technology-driven world, with a particular focus on changing markets and regional perspectives.

🌍 Beyond the Scenic View: Rethinking Destination Transformation and Inclusive Wellbeing

October 7, CinTurs hosted the seminar “Beyond the Scenic View: Reimagining Destination Transformation through Eudaimonic and Hedonic Tourism Consumption for Inclusive Wellbeing”, featuring Nelson Matos, Bernardete Sequeira, and Ana Bender, from the University of Algarve, and Miguel Sánchez Jiménez, from the University of Cádiz.

The session brought together different perspectives on how tourism can contribute to destination transformation and create value for visitors, residents, and local communities.

💡 One of the key messages from the seminar was:
“Transformation does not reside solely in what individuals feel, but also in the equity, sustainability, and inclusion that the destination structurally provides.”

This message highlights an important idea: meaningful destination transformation goes beyond individual visitor experiences. It also depends on how destinations promote equity, sustainability, and inclusion, creating the conditions for broader and more lasting wellbeing.

We would also like to thank the European University of the Seas (SEA-EU) project for its support in making this event possible, under the Partnerships for Excellence initiative (Grant Agreement No. 101089757 – SEA-EU 2.0).

🌍 CinTurs Researcher Manuela Rosa Joins the Jury of EU TalentOn 2026!

On September 10 and 11, Professor Manuela Rosa, researcher at CinTurs, took part in EU TalentOn 2026 as a jury member for the Climate-neutral & Smart Cities Mission.

EU TalentOn is a European scientific competition held as part of Science Comes to Town 2026, an EU-funded initiative that brings science closer to citizens and encourages collaboration and innovation across Europe.

Throughout 2026, the cities of Kiel (Germany), Brest (France), and Split (Croatia) are hosting a year-long programme connecting scientific institutions, innovation ecosystems, and local communities.

CinTurs is organising a seminar dedicated to the presentation and discussion of the results of the Beyond the Scenic View project, exploring new perspectives on destination transformation and the role of eudaimonic and hedonic tourism consumption in promoting inclusive wellbeing.
