Mount of Oaks/Monte dos Carvalhos We are a non-profit Association (WHITE STONE) who runs a Farm (Mount of Oaks) in Portugal based on Permaculture ethics to educate and provide regeneration.

We are based here in the foothills of the beautiful Gardunha mountain range at about 350m above sea level. We are about 40km from the highest mountain range in Portugal - Serra da Estrela with a max height of 2,000m. Our land is about 5 hectars of terraces. Before we came here the land had been abandoned for many years - so we were really lucky that there were no signs of chemical use and the soil was in good shape! We have different soil quality in different parts of the land - this is useful for our different needs. Good soil for the garden; more loamy soil in the terraces below which have lots of water; and a good mix of clay for building - we used it for plastering our strawbale house! A main priority for us is to build the soil quality by mulching the gardens and around trees - we have a donkey who poops a lot - we use his waste as a valuable commodity, and we are about to try the hugelkulture raised beds - we are super excited about this! As for water, something that is often a question here in Portugal, we are really blessed with two drinking water springs and a huge pond/small lake at the top of the land - which collects rain and also has a spring. As for trees...here we go with a sort of inventory of our trees.....the land has about 65 olive trees - we are really lucky as these are a very old variety which produces amazing olive oil - organic!!! We have lots of citrus fruits, including oranges; different qualities of tangerines and mandarines and lemon. We have figs; apricot; pears (old variety); nêspera; plums; mimosa (which in a controlled way we have been using as productiively as possible - for fire wood, building and fencing); as our name suggests we also have LOTS of oaks and cork oaks; ash; willow - salgueiro; we have a few pines and a few eucalyptus. We are intending to graft the wild grapes we have found growing all over the place. We planted in the last years some new cherry trees, medronho (strawberry tree), apple, almonds, chestnuts, hazelnuts, birch, feijoa, nashi pear, lime, walnut, elderflower, weeping willow, planes. Finally we also have several large cherry trees - again of an old variety, both sweet and sour. This region, near Fundao is known throughout Portugal as the premier area for growing cherries - there is an annual cherry festival here in May time. As for buildings, when we arrived there was only an old small ruin - where the cows lived - this is currently the common kitchen space. The land has permission for more buildings, and this is a real bonus. We constructed a super duper compost toilet which also acts as a library. Other structures include a common shelter where workshops take place - this has a broom roof! We have a bathhouse with a solar shower and a fire bath. Our donkey has a house - which is also our recycling center! There is a guestroom made from wood, a tool shed and finally we have a strawbale pantry house. This building was constructed during a workshop lead by Lesley Martin. In all our building we seek to use local material - mostly what we can find on the land, and as we dont have much money we also have to pace ourselves and wait for the oportune time to start. We are lucky in that we have had help coming from other places when we most need it! We have a caravan for guests and a bus where we (barbara and emma) live. As for projects, we have many and we try to take it day by day - setting our priorities by the season and the design we have for the place. Our gardens are based on designs incorporating companion planting, intercroping and stacking - heavy on the mulch throughout the year. We started an experimental forest garden in 2012 which we are observing and improving. In the near future we have plans to renovate the current common kitchen space and add a second floor for better guest accomodation - with a downstairs space to run workshops in the winter. Soon we will have chickens which will live in the mobile house so we can move them around to help prepare the soil before planting seeds. Here at the Mount of Oaks we have successful held 5 PDC's and look forward to hosting more every year. Please get in touch if you would like more information - about the project or about a PDC.

LONG TERM LAND GUARDIANS AND MONASTIC LIVING
We, Barbara and Emma, a married couple, are the only guardians at the moment living at the Mount of Oaks, an Off grid Permaculture Project since 2006 in Central Portugal. We are calling new full time guardians as the ecosystem grows and requires more human beings as part of it.
As it has already a specific call to be a monastic community, we are looking for humans who not only have experience on off-grid living in permaculture systems, but mainly that have a divine call to pray and be at service (to God, Nature and local community).
We are looking for humans who aspire to be producers more than consumers and who desire to live simple lives with very little financial needs.
We like transparency in this area, so, this project, as it is already well developed, has many ways to finance itself and the costs to run it are quite reasonable even for a southern european country. With an average of 10.000e a year (less than a portuguese minimum wage) we provide a living for 2 humans with one car and a working farm van, 2 mobile phones, some gas for the kitchen, petrol machines like a water pump, solar system, 2 dogs, 4 cats, chickens, ducks and geese, a donkey and a mare...
We are a non-profit Association so we also count with some fees from our international faithful associates who believe in what we are about...This cover mainly our accountant that we have to employ as a public institution. Then we have hospitality (renting our guest room, caravan and camping for people on retreats or holidays), Events and Courses (Permaculture and natural building courses, retreats, medicine cerimonies, mushroom identification walks, etc), Produce (eggs, chicken meat, vegetables, herbs, teas, tinctures, oils, fermented food and other medicines) and also occasional donations that we are always very grateful for... With a bit here and there we manage to cover our total expenses and have enough for our own personal needs (maybe 1000-2000e a year for each, coming from our own personal projects).
We will expect any new guardian to contribute financially on the initial stage of their staying as me and Emma did for many years to develop this place... Eventually, for those who become a "match", there are many possibilities to develop your own income generation from the land, as long as it fits our ethics and principles...
At this moment, as it is, there is abundance enough to welcome more humans and we believe that more humans will also generate more abundance as the system has much potential to grow and develop if we would have more hands and minds to share all the work and responsibility...the potential is imense to regenerate and produce even more and provide a healthy and good quality living for 2 - 4 more capable human beings...
As I mentioned before, the main motivation is not only to live off-grid or out of the capitalist system, but the reason why we want to produce most of what we need to consume using the least capital as possible and not overworking is so we have more time to dedicate to pray, meditate, study and serve our local community as we have been doing all these years... At this moment, besides hospitality and education we also hold singing/praying circles every 2 weeks, purification sweat lodges every new moon, occasional healing ceremonies for our local community and personal counseling as is Emma´s main gift among many others.
We are both followers of Christ for many years, came out of institutional christianity a long time ago too, and we were guided by the Spirit who brought us to this land to serve this way and work alongside those who have a clear call from The Great Spirit of Love and Light to pray and serve this land/earth and the community God builds around it...
If all this calls you or is already part of your life, get in touch and we can start a conversation.
On the 17th of February 2025 we will start our open season with our off-grid permaculture internship and this would be an ideal time for us to get to know a potential new guardian.
In March we will host a Perculture Design Course, and if you don't have one already, we recommend enrolling on that too, as it´s very important for us that we all share the ethics and principles of Permaculture and regenerative land practices.
Check our website and specially our internship post, as it might give you a more clear idea of what we are about and how we see this place...

Mount of Oaks (MoO) is opening for applications for those who feel called to be part of our 10 week "Permaculture Off-Grid/Greed Internship".(reviewed text-April 2024) This idea has developed out of our own experience since 2006, hosting hundreds of guests, friends, volunteers and family. We...

A message from Emma...

" I wanted to let you know that we are in the last day of life with super dog Tali. She is lying next to me on the bed, wrapped in my wooly dressing gown. The last weeks have been more difficult for her, with her energy lessening. This disease she developed in 2020 (leishmaniose) left her with the kidney problems, and despite the medication, change in diet and the last 2 months daily injections, she is very tired. Over the weekend she was communicating that she is ready to enter the eternal bliss. She has brought so much love, life and joy to many many folks who passed by, and has been a dear friend to us and Goofy for the last 12 years. Yes, she is ready, and so are we to transform our relationship with her. A vet, Dr. Judite will come tomorrow at 8.30am and help her to sleep. Various of her fans are coming to visit today, mostly kids who adored her. We ask that you remember her today, tomorrow and the following days. If you can join us in lighting candles, it would be welcome. It feels fitting she leaves us in this form tomorrow, on this particular full moon day - the cycles of life, death, rebirth continue and this powerful moon light will lead her home. So, if you have words to share or photos of her, we would appreciate this too. Much love from me, Emma and Barbara and all the seen and unseen beings at the Mount of Oaks.
