From the 6th to the 8th of October we will receive the visit of Dr. Jenny Smith from the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory at Stanford University for a Workshop titled “FPGA/RFSoC-Based Instrumentation for Next-Generation Detectors”.

Dr. Smith got her PhD in Physics in 2024 at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her PhD work focused on the scaling of Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detector (MKID) readout to support the development of cutting-edge superconducting single-photon-counting detectors, which can be applied in biological microscopy, integrated photonics and exoplanet direct detection. As part of this work, Dr. Smith designed and implemented an FPGA/RFSoC-based real-time monitoring system for 2000 superconducting detectors. Combined with a PYNQ-based software platform, this system enables a simpler setup and operation of large-scale MKID arrays. Currently, at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Dr. Smith is leading the development of FPGA-based instrumentation for next-generation detectors, with applications ranging from cosmology to quantum technologies.

Curious to learn more about Dr. Smith’s research journey and the technologies behind her work? Alongside a research talk and a round table, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in a hands-on workshop on FPGA/RFSoC-based sensor readout using PYNQ, providing a practical introduction to Python-based control of FPGA systems that you can use on your experimental setups.

And one more thing! Our colleagues at FISUA agreed to partner with us, and will be conducting an astronomical observation session for our community, which will make this event even more special!

Excited to join us? All you need to do is to register using the link in our bio! Stay tuned for updates on the full scientific and social program, coming very soon!

On July 8, the UA OPTICA Student Chapter had the pleasure of welcoming a group of curious high school students into the fascinating world of optical communications as part of the 2026 edition of Academia de Verão Universidade de Aveiro . 🚀

The visit began with an introductory presentation, followed by a guided tour of the Optics Labs of , where they got to learn about all the different fields they can explore in this area. From photonic chips, to quantum communications and to free-space optics, our PhD student collaborators showed our guests a bit of what the exciting word of optics can look like. Before they went home, our young researchers took part in a hands-on optical fiber fusion splicing activity showing their potential as future optical engineers.🔬✨

A big thank you to Margarida, Vìtor and João for agreeing to collaborate with us in making this activity possible!

It is always a great pleasure to welcome these eager young minds into our day-to-day lives as researchers in optics, and our Chapter is committed to keep on sharing these enriching experiences with the community. 💡🔍
