Change doesn’t only come from big institutions or governments. It is also built every day by people who organise, support, educate, care and create alternatives within their communities.

That’s why we were happy to collaborate with AMRIS on the creation of this promotional video, helping share the work they do and the impact they have.

AMRIS is a powerful example of how people can cooperate through mutual support, solidarity and collective care. This network of women supporting one another offers a glimpse of how we might organise our societies differently, drawing inspiration from feminist and decolonial perspectives to build a fairer and more just world.

We believe that stories matter. Not only the stories that warn us about the problems we face, but also the stories that show the people already working on alternatives.

🌱 The future is already here. Sometimes it just needs more visibility.

🎬 Why do we keep watching the same stories over and over again?

Superheroes save the world. A chosen one defeats evil. The sequel. The reboot. The remake. Maybe these stories feel comfortable because we already know how they end.

But stories do more than entertain us. They shape how we imagine society, power, change, and the future itself. If all the stories we consume tell us that change comes from one exceptional hero, how can we imagine collective action? If every future on screen looks dystopian, how can we believe that a better world is possible?

We don’t just need new characters. We need new narratives. Stories that challenge us, stories that move us, and stories that help us imagine futures worth fighting for. Because the futures we can imagine are often the futures we can create.

We are constantly told to be realistic. To adapt. To manage crises. To survive.

But what if “realism” is not neutral? What if the futures we are able to imagine are shaped by the stories, images and narratives that surround us every day?

At Rakonto, we have spent years exploring desirable futures through cinema, photography, artistic creation and non-formal education. We are interested in how imagination can become a tool for social and ecological transformation.

Because imagining alternatives is not about escaping reality. It is about creating the conditions to change it.

Volunteering can create meaningful connections, support local initiatives and contribute to positive change. But not every project is built in the same way.

As travelers moving through Latin America, we’ve been asking ourselves a simple question: how can we make sure our presence is actually useful and not unintentionally reproducing unequal dynamics?

Over time, these became some of our main criteria when deciding which projects and organizations to support:

• We don’t pay to volunteer
• Projects should be led by local people
• We avoid profit-driven volunteering models
• The work should respond to local realities and needs
• Long-term relationships matter more than short-term experiences
• Local workers should not be displaced

These are not universal rules and we’re still learning ourselves. But they help us approach volunteering with more care, humility and responsibility.
