Ou em grande ou nada 🍷 O dia mais longo do ano pede as garrafas maiores. No dia 21 de junho, os vai tomar conta da Praça Beato para o Alentejo à Grande, uma celebração do solstício de verão dedicada aos vinhos de grande formato de toda a região – quanto maior, melhor!

20 produtores do Alentejo irão servir vinhos em garrafas magnum, salmanazar e tudo o que há entre elas – e a conversa será igualmente grandiosa, com um painel de debate liderado pelo jornalista especializado em vinhos, gastronomia e azeite Edgardo Pacheco. Venha preparado para provar, conversar e fazer perguntas.

Go grande or go home 🍷 The longest day of the year calls for the biggest bottles. On 21 June, will be taking over Praça Beato for Alentejo à Grande, a summer solstice celebration of large-format wines from across the region – the bigger, the better!

20 Alentejo producers will be pouring from magnums, salmanazars and everything in between – and the conversation will be just as large, with a panel discussion led by wine, gastronomy and olive oil journalist Edgardo Pacheco. Come ready to taste, talk and ask questions.

Se encontrasse uma vinha centenária abandonada, iria recuperá-la? 🍇

Foi exatamente essa a aventura que o antigo bailarino principal João Afonso iniciou em 2009, ao descobrir uma vinha centenária abandonada no sopé da Serra de São Mamede.

Trabalhando de forma 100% orgânica e integrando práticas biodinâmicas, João e a sua família cultivam a terra tal como os seus antepassados o faziam: sem químicos e em harmonia com as vinhas antigas, já profundamente enraizadas naquele lugar.

Seguindo o antigo estilo de field blend, diferentes castas são colhidas numa única passagem na vinha: as brancas em conjunto e as tintas em conjunto, dando origem a vinhos mais ricos, complexos e multidimensionais.

If you found an abandoned 100-year-old vineyard, would you rescue it? 🍇

That’s exactly the adventure that former principal ballet dancer João Afonso began in 2009 after discovering a neglected centenarian vineyard in the foothills of the Serra de São Mamede.

Working 100% organically and integrating biodynamic practices, João and his family farm the land exactly as those before them – without chemicals, in harmony with the ancient vines already deeply rooted there.

In the old “field blend” style, many different varietals are harvested in a single pass – whites together, reds together – creating wines that are richer and more multidimensional.

As nossas flores favoritas? Vinhas em flor 🌼 Nesta altura do ano, as vinhas do Alentejo entram numa das fases mais importantes e frágeis do ciclo vegetativo – a floração. Aqui ficam 3 pontos essenciais:

1. Uma janela breve 🪟 A floração ocorre no final da primavera e dura normalmente 1–2 semanas, dependendo das condições meteorológicas. No nosso clima mediterrânico quente, pode até durar apenas alguns dias.

2. Flores sensíveis 🌡️ As flores da videira são vulneráveis a condições meteorológicas extremas – os produtores têm de estar atentos a ameaças como picos de calor intenso ou ventos fortes, que podem afetar o seu desenvolvimento.

3. Da flor ao fruto 🍇 As videiras têm flores hermafroditas e são autopolinizáveis, o que significa que cada flor pode fecundar-se a si própria e dar origem a um pequeno bago. Idealmente, os cachos desenvolvem-se de forma sincronizada para um bom vingamento do fruto, preparando o caminho para uma excelente colheita!

Our favourite flowers? Vines in bloom 🌼 At this time of year, Alentejo vineyards enter one of the most defining and fragile stages in the growing season – flowering. Here are 3 things to know:

1. A brief window 🪟 Arriving in late spring, flowering typically lasts 1-2 weeks, depending on weather conditions. In our warm Mediterranean climate it can be over in a matter of days.

2. Sensitive flowers 🌡️ Vine blooms are vulnerable to extreme weather – growers must be on the watch for threats from intense heat spikes or strong winds that can affect their ability to develop.

3. Flower to fruit 🍇 Grapevines are self-pollinators, meaning each flower can fertilise itself and become a tiny berry. Ideally clusters are synchronised for an even fruit set, setting the stage for an excellent vintage!

Dia Internacional da Biodiversidade 🌍 O Alentejo pode representar apenas 0,3% da área mundial de vinha, mas os mais de 700 membros do PSVA estão a ter um grande impacto na biodiversidade, trabalhando em 60% dos 20.022 ha de vinhas da região para proteger e restaurar a natureza:

Eis o que isso significa na prática:

🌱 Plantação de culturas de cobertura como leguminosas nativas e flores silvestres para reativar o microbioma do solo.
🌳 Preservação dos antigos montados de sobro e azinho do Alentejo – um dos ecossistemas mais biodiversos da Europa.
🦉 Manutenção de corredores ecológicos e habitats naturais nas propriedades, permitindo que a natureza se mova livremente.
🐝 Promoção de predadores naturais de pragas, redução do uso de pesticidas e introdução de colmeias para apoiar os nossos preciosos polinizadores.
🐑 Pastoreio de animais entre as linhas de vinha como alternativa suave e natural aos herbicidas e à mobilização mecânica do solo.

Com 29 produtores certificados, mais de 700 membros e 11 prémios internacionais, o PSVA é a prova de que vinho e natureza não só coexistem como prosperam juntos.

World Biodiversity Day 🌍 Alentejo may represent just 0.3% of the world's vineyard area, but our 700 WASP members are having a big impact on biodiversity, working across 60% of the region's 23,653 ha of vineyards to protect and restore nature:

Here's what that looks like on the ground:

🌱 Planting cover crops of native legumes and wildflowers to bring the soil microbiome back to life.
🌳 Preserving Alentejo's ancient cork oak and holm oak forests – one of Europe's most biodiverse ecosystems.
🦉 Maintaining wildlife corridors and natural habitats across estate land so nature can move freely.
🐝 Welcoming natural pest predators, scaling back pesticide use and introducing beehives to support our precious pollinators.
🐑 Grazing animals between vine rows as a gentle, natural alternative to herbicides and mechanical mowing.

With 29 certified producers, 700 members and 11 international awards, WASP is proof that wine and nature don't just coexist – they thrive together.

É época de tosquia no Alentejo! 🐑 Tal como todos nós, todas as primaveras estas belas ovelhas Merino despedem-se dos seus casacos de inverno de lã – uma tradição pastoril milenar, já praticada aqui desde os tempos dos romanos.

Na adega familiar Casa Relvas, em Évora, a tosquia é levada muito a sério e feita com cuidado. A remoção da lã ajuda o rebanho Merino a regular a temperatura corporal e a enfrentar os meses mais quentes com maior conforto.

💡 Depois de tosquiada, a lã não é desperdiçada: é incorporada em estrume orgânico, devolvendo nutrientes diretamente ao solo que alimenta as vinhas. “Na natureza, nada se perde – tudo volta à terra," dizem.

It's shearing season in Alentejo! 🐑 Like all of us, every spring these beautiful Merino sheep bid farewell to their woolly winter coats – a pastoral tradition that continued here since the Roman times.

At the family-run winery Casa Relvas in Évora, shearing is taken seriously and done with care. Removing the wool helps their Merino herd regulate their body temperature and get through hotter months more comfortably.

💡 Once shorn, the fleece doesn't go to waste: it's incorporated into organic manure, returning nutrients directly to the soil that nourishes their vines. "In nature, nothing is lost – everything returns to the earth,” they say.
