🌟Today, UNESCO successfully concluded the final activity of its psychosocial response and well-being program for journalists in the West Bank, implemented in partnership with Witness-شاهد🤝

Around 35 dedicated journalists took part, with an inspiring 80% being women - a powerful testament to the role of female media professionals in the region. A representative from SIDA Consulate General of Sweden in Jerusalem also took part in the session, highlighting the importance of international support for journalist well-being.

This initiative was made possible through the UNESCO Multi-Donor Programme to Support Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists.

UNESCO is delivering critical recovery support in Gaza mobilizing $5.7 million in emergency assistance to protect cultural heritage, restore access to education, and support independent media.

From stabilizing damaged heritage sites and creating local jobs, to enabling thousands of children and students to continue learning, and empowering journalists with training, equipment, and psychosocial support, UNESCO’s actions are helping communities endure and recover amid crisis.

To sustain and expand these efforts, $116.5 million is still needed.

Continued international support is essential to safeguard culture, rebuild human capital, strengthen resilient media, and support long‑term recovery of Gaza.

Together, we can help ensure hope, learning, and cultural identity are not lost, even in the most challenging times.

الحقيقة هي مفتاح تحقيق السلام.

إنّ الحصول على معلومات موثوقة ومؤكدة ليس خياراً، بل هو ركيزة أساسية لإرساء أسس مجتمعات تنعم بالسلام والعدل وقادرة على التكيف.

لكن هذه الركيزة تتعرض اليوم للضغط. إذ سجلت حرية التعبير تراجعاً عالمياً بنسبة 10% منذ عام 2012. وارتفع معدل الرقابة الذاتية لدى الصحفيين بنسبة 63%، إذ زاد حرصهم على تجنب تناول قضايا الفساد وحقوق الإنسان والبيئة. ولا تزال نسبة الإفلات من العقاب على الجرائم المرتكبة ضد الصحفيين 85%.
تعمّق المعلومات التي تخضع للتلاعب الانقسامات وتزعزع الثقة، إلا أن المعلومات الحرة والصادقة تعزز المساءلة والحوار وحقوق الإنسان.

تدعو اليونسكو في اليوم العالمي لحرية الصحافة إلى تجديد الالتزام بحماية حرية التعبير ودعم الصحافة باعتبارها ركيزة لتحقيق السلام.

Peace begins with truth.

Access to reliable, verified information is not optional. It is fundamental to building peaceful, just and resilient societies.

Yet today, this foundation is under strain. Freedom of expression has declined by 10% globally since 2012. Self-censorship for journalists has surged by 63%, as they increasingly avoid reporting on corruption, human rights and environmental issues. At the same time, impunity for crimes against journalists remains at 85%.

When information is manipulated, it fuels division and weakens trust. When it is free and truthful, it strengthens accountability, dialogue and human rights.

On World Press Freedom Day, UNESCO calls for renewed commitment to protect freedom of expression and support journalism as a pillar of peace.

Ahead of the , at the European Broadcasting Union - EBU conference in Geneva, is represented by focal point for Communication and Information, Hala Tannous, who delivered a stark and urgent message: We do not speak about Palestinian journalists from a distance — we work with them.

Statistics were shared from the UNESCO World Trends Report as well as UNESCO’s interventions in Gaza.

But beyond the statistics lies a deeper truth: Gaza’s journalists are not just covering the war — they are surviving it. Training happens under airstrikes. Mobile journalism is a lifeline. And trauma is cumulative.

UNESCO’s call to action is clear — not a wish list, but a professional necessity:
1️⃣ Establish a baseline – a full media sector assessment
2️⃣ Upskill – AI fact-checking, cybersecurity, crisis leadership
3️⃣ Sustain mental health – permanent MHPSS programs, not short-term counseling
4️⃣ Improve media resilience – transparency, inclusivity, local ownership
5️⃣ Build the future – Gaza Journalists’ Alumni Network & Women’s Media Club

The message is clear: “Rebuilding media is not a separate track from reconstruction. It is the prerequisite for all other forms of rebuilding to be sustainable and meaningful.”




بمناسبة اليوم العالمي لحرية الصحافة، وخلال مؤتمر اتحاد البث الأوروبي (EBU) في جنيف، مثّلت اليونسكو السيدة هلا طنوس، منسقة قطاع الاتصال والمعلومات، والتي وجّهت رسالة واضحة وحاسمة: "نحن لا نتحدث عن الصحفيين الفلسطينيين من بعيد — بل نعمل معهم مباشرة".
تم عرض إحصاءات من تقرير اليونسكو العالمي للاتجاهات، وكذلك من تدخلات اليونسكو في غزة.

لكن خلف الأرقام تكمن حقيقة أعمق: صحفيو غزة لا يغطون الحرب فقط — بل يعيشونها ويكافحون من أجل البقاء. التدريب يتم تحت القصف. الصحافة عبر الهاتف المحمول أصبحت شريان حياة. والصدمات النفسية تتراكم يومًا بعد يوم.

دعوة اليونسكو للعمل واضحة — ليست مجرد قائمة أمنيات، بل ضرورة مهنية:
1️⃣ وضع خط أساسي — تقييم شامل لقطاع الإعلام.
2️⃣ تطوير المهارات — التحقق بالذكاء الاصطناعي، الأمن السيبراني، القيادة في الأزمات.
3️⃣ دعم الصحة النفسية — برامج دعم نفسي واجتماعي مستدامة، وليست استشارات قصيرة الأمد.
4️⃣ تعزيز مرونة الإعلام — الشفافية، والشمولية، والملكية المحلية.
5️⃣ بناء المستقبل — شبكة خريجي الصحفيين في غزة، والنادي النسائي للإعلام.

الرسالة واضحة: "إعادة بناء الإعلام ليست مسارًا موازيًا لإعادة الإعمار. بل هي الشرط الأساسي لكي تكون كل أشكال التعمير الأخرى مستدامة وذات معنى".

In celebration of International Girls in ICT Day, UNESCO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, and with the support of partners, hosted an online event under the theme “AI for Development: Empowering Girls to Shape the Digital Future.”💻✨

The webinar brought together experts, educators, and inspiring young voices to explore how girls can lead in the age of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. Focusing on challenging stereotypes about women in tech, highlighting the importance of pursuing education in emerging technology fields, and emphasizing how girls’ participation in the digital world strengthens their independence and future prospects.

The webinar also focused on inclusive technology and the vital role girls must play in shaping innovative and equitable digital solutions.

في إطار الاحتفال باليوم الدولي للفتيات في مجال تكنولوجيا المعلومات والاتصالات ، نظّمت اليونسكو ، بالتعاون مع وزارة التربية والتعليم العالي وبدعم من الشركاء، فعالية عبر الإنترنت تحت شعار: "الذكاء الاصطناعي من أجل التنمية: تمكين الفتيات لرسم ملامح المستقبل الرقمي".

جمعت الفعالية خبراء وتربويين وأصواتًا شابة ملهمة لاستكشاف سبل تمكين الفتيات من القيادة في عصر الذكاء الاصطناعي والتقنيات الناشئة، مع التركيز على كسر الصور النمطية حول المرأة في قطاع التكنولوجيا، وتسليط الضوء على أهمية الالتحاق بالتخصصات التقنية، وتعزيز دور الفتيات في العالم الرقمي بما يدعم استقلاليتهن وآفاقهن المستقبلية.

كما أكدت النقاشات على التكنولوجيا الشاملة والدور الحيوي الذي يجب أن تلعبه الفتيات في صياغة حلول رقمية مبتكرة وعادلة.

Malak is a second year student of Digital Architecture Engineering at Al Aqsa University in Gaza. Like many girls passionate about technology and innovation, Malak dreamed of graduating with distinction and supporting her family. That dream was disrupted when forced to flee her home with her family.

On Day, Malak reminds us that access to technology is not a luxury—it is a lifeline, and that investing in girls’ digital education means investing in resilience, hope, and the future.

نسلط الضوء اليوم على عزيمة الشابات اللواتي يواصلن السعي وراء التكنولوجيا والتعليم رغم كل الصعوبات.

ملاك طالبة في السنة الثانية في تخصص هندسة العمارة الرقمية في جامعة الأقصى في غزة، تمثل قصة كثيرٍ من الفتيات الشغوفات بالتكنولوجيا والابتكار. كانت تحلم بالتخرج بامتياز ومساندة أسرتها،إلا أن هذا الحلم توقف عندما اضطرت إلى النزوح مع عائلتها.

في اليوم العالمي للفتيات في مجال تكنولوجيا المعلومات والاتصالات، تُذكّرنا ملاك بأن الوصول إلى التكنولوجيا ليس ترفًا، بل هو شريان حياة، وأن الاستثمار في تعليم الفتيات الرقمي هو استثمار في الصمود والأمل والمستقبل.
