Born in the aftermath of the destruction of Gaza's last university by Israeli forces, on January 17th 2024, ACADEMICS4GAZA (A4G) emerges as a beacon of hope amidst devastation, and response to the Israeli attempt to obliterate the Palestinian educational system. This international initiative, conceived by dr. Fabio Carbone, Italian academic and Humanitarian Activist, and immediately embraced by tens of scholars worldwide, including academics from Gaza such as Dr. Wesam Amer (Gaza University), aims to support Gaza's student population during these challenging times. For this purpose, A4G gathered an international network of volunteer scholars from diverse academic backgrounds to provide online tutoring sessions, seminars, and tailor-made lectures to the students of Gaza, addressing specific needs of students, working in cooperation with the local universities. This initiative wants to provide an immediate bridge solution and give some continuity to academic activities for students in Gaza in the universities where they were originally enrolled. Crucially, the aid offered is meticulously crafted in response to explicit requests from local universities, serving as a bridge between the informal group A4G and their students. This collaborative approach aims to reduce the alarming trend of students leaving Gaza for educational opportunities elsewhere, a situation that could lead to the irreversible collapse of universities in the region. Other longer-term efforts are being deployed in designing more complex and sustainable solutions. Potentially accredited academic courses will be delivered in partnership with local universities, with the beginning of the upcoming new academic year in September. Beyond immediate assistance, A4G aspires to evolve into a project of Education in Emergency, which may encompass future endeavours such as providing psychological support and essential services to Gaza's students, always in collaboration with Gaza's universities. In the face of adversity, A4G aims not only to rebuild shattered classrooms giving support to local lecturers, but also to nurture the minds and spirits of students, empowering them to pursue their educational aspirations. A4G recognizes the immense logistical difficulties and those associated with the need for a robust internet infrastructure. However, with its minimalist approach, it aims to overcome these hurdles (e.g. tutoring sessions, seminars, and student meetings, defined in collaboration with local universities, can be conducted directly via WhatsApp calls or similar platforms). This pragmatic approach ensures that support reaches students despite limitations, demonstrating adaptability and innovation in the face of adversity. By leveraging existing communication channels, A4G maximizes its impact while circumventing infrastructure constraints. Together, let us illuminate the path to a brighter future for Gaza's students, one lesson at a time.

📣 THIS WEEK IN PALESTINE 📣
Israel Kills 4 Children as It Warns Palestinian Kids Not to Fly Kites.

Children in Gaza can’t even fly kites anymore – without risking their lives. Israel continues to ensure kids in Gaza have no childhood – whether by killing them, displacing them, wounding them, imprisoning them, and/or starving them, and now by taking away one of the few things that bring them joy. The cruelty is hard to comprehend.

Meanwhile, Israel continues to fly its quadcopters and launch missiles with impunity.

Just this week, Israeli fire killed at least four children across Gaza and the occupied West Bank: 4-year-olds Hassan al-Hafi and Muhammad Abdel Salam Taha, 10-year-old Amal Nash’at Abu Khater, and 14-year-old Islam Ahmed Ajouri.

Meanwhile, Israeli settlers continued their siege of the Palestinian village of Qusra and their attacks on other areas of the West Bank.

US Ambassador Mike Huckabee called settlers besieging a Palestinian American home in the occupied West Bank “Israeli terrorists.” It’s a welcome, rare rebuke from a U.S. official, but what kind of weight does it really have when the same official has been a long-time supporter of Israeli settlements? It wasn’t that long ago that Huckabee made similar comments about settler violence gripping the Palestinian Christian village of Taybeh, where attacks continue, or the settlers who beat Palestinian American Sayfollah Musallet to death (no one has been held accountable).

What kind of weight do Huckabee’s comments really have when, hours after using the phrase “Israeli terrorists,” he called the settlers “illegal trespassers” instead? Or when he defended the vast majority of settlers, saying they aren’t the problem, the “unsettlers” are, even though the settlements themselves are illegal under international law? It’s nice for officials to call attention to what Palestinians and their supporters have been decrying for years, but it rings hollow when nothing of substance is actually done to hold Israel accountable.

Just this week, Benjamin Netanyahu rejected Donald Trump’s Gaza plan, Israel killed a 13-year-old girl by reportedly shooting her as she memorized the Quran, and an Israeli official said the bodies of Palestinians should be held as bargaining chips ( ).

In this context, ACADEMICS4GAZA doesn't stop its work to support youth, academics and education.

ONE MORE MILESTONE - Proud and excited to announce our partnership with the University of Palestine, working together to support the reopening and continuity of university courses through international academic volunteering.

For the past two years, through ACADEMICS4GAZA, we have stood alongside individual students, helping them continue their education despite unimaginable challenges. Today, we take the next step.

This partnership represents a shift from supporting individual learners to contributing to the rebuilding of higher education itself. It is a new chapter focused on educational resilience, academic solidarity, and the belief that universities must remain places of hope, even in times of crisis.

This is a significant moment for ACADEMICS4, and an important milestone in the journey that began with ACADEMICS4GAZA in January 2024.

To everyone who has volunteered, supported, donated, or simply believed in our mission: thank you. This achievement belongs to all of you.

Today marks an important milestone in our journey.

We are proud to announce the official launch of ACADEMICS4 as an unincorporated association, representing the natural evolution of the work that began over two years ago with Academics4Gaza.

What started as an emergency response to support students whose education had been disrupted by conflict has grown into an international network of volunteers, academics and professionals committed to one simple belief: education should never stop because of crisis.

Over the past two years, through Academics4Gaza, our volunteers have provided one-to-one tutoring, language practice, mentoring, psychosocial support and academic opportunities to students affected by war. That mission remains at the heart of everything we do.

ACADEMICS4 builds on that experience with a broader vision: supporting access to education, wellbeing and academic continuity for learners affected by conflicts, humanitarian crises and other emergencies around the world.

As part of this new chapter, we are delighted to announce that donations can now be made through our official fundraising page, enabling individuals and organisations to support our mission in a secure and transparent way.

In the coming weeks, we will also launch our official website, where you will be able to learn more about our projects, meet our volunteers and partners, and discover new ways to get involved.

This is only the beginning.

To everyone who has volunteered, donated, partnered with us or simply believed in our vision over the past two years: thank you. Your support has made this milestone possible.

Together, we will continue supporting education in times of crisis.

Thank you, Noor, for sharing a page of your story. 🫂

This is exactly what A4G is all about. It is not just about English classes to improve language skills, but also about socializing and building connections between people from all over the world who share the same dreams.

Some of "our" students from Gaza are now here in Italy, continuing their university studies. These are the small victories that drive us.

Our wish, and what we work for every day, is to continue supporting students like Noor to make their dreams come true—either in their beloved homeland or wherever they feel safe.

Rain and wind are incessant, the tents flood and become freezing, unlivable.
Water has become a source of disease and contagion.
It's a disaster in a disaster.
(Giorgio Monti- medical coordinator of EMERGENCY)

In these tents, under the flood, many of the youngs are also students, and many of them don't give up hope of continuing their studies and wasting no time. We are here for them, we are here with them.

How can we talk about Christmas here?
