Wild Animal Volunteers - WAV

Wild Animal Volunteers - WAV We are a very special zoological facility like no other in Africa! Volunteer at the Cango Wildlife Ranch and help us to help them!

There is something truly special about being up-close and personal with wild animals that need your nurturing and care! If you are passionate about wild animals and want to make a difference in their lives, then this is for you. The rewards and benefits are two-fold, we give you an experience of a lifetime and you assist us in our conservation efforts! White Tigers, Leopards, White Lions, Cheetah

and a host of other endangered animals from Ring Tailed Lemurs to Meerkats and Marabou Storks are what you will be working/living with on a daily basis. Get down and dirty in a fun-filled program of animal care with the purrs and squeaks of satisfaction being your reward. As long as you are at least 18 years old, whether you are a student on a gap year, want a break from your office job, are retired, or you just want to get away from it all for a while, join us and experience a unique once in a lifetime opportunity! Our volunteer program will give you a fascinating wildlife experience whilst you learn about our conservation efforts with these amazing animals. You will get loads of hands on experience with our endangered animals, but you also need to be prepared to get down and dirty, as along with the pleasure of interacting with these beautiful animals… their enclosures also need maintaining!

Mirror, mirror on the wall… who has the most iconic spots of them all?

This is mirror enrichment, an engaging tool used to stimulate curiosity, encourage investigation, and support natural behaviours in cheetahs. Thoughtfully planned enrichment helps keep animals mentally stimulated, physically engaged, and emotionally supported in managed care.

Conservation status: The cheetah is classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with wild populations continuing to decline due to habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict.

For our volunteers, moments like these highlight how enrichment plays a meaningful role in daily animal welfare and long-term conservation outcomes.

Louisa’s WAV journey. 2018 to 2025.

“2018 was my very first year at Cango Wildlife. I had no idea then that it would become my second home.

Since that first year, I have returned every single year. I am always incredibly excited to come back, and the moment I leave, I already start thinking about when I can fly back again. Cango Wildlife feels like family.

During your stay, it is not only about the animals. You build lifelong friendships with staff and fellow volunteers. The people working here are deeply passionate about what they do, which makes it easy to form strong bonds. When you keep coming back, those bonds only grow stronger. Staff members become friends, and friends become family.

Every stay is different. The animals, the team, and the fun weekends are always there, but there are new volunteers to meet, new animals to connect with, and new experiences to enjoy each time.

Some of the volunteers I met in my very first year are still close friends today. One year, I bonded deeply with a meerkat named Luna who completely stole my heart. Even though the work is familiar, there is always something new and special waiting.

That is what makes every single stay at Cango Wildlife so meaningful to me.”

Santa came early to the habitat, and our African Leopard Nanji was clearly on the nice list.

From cardboard reindeer to festive surprises, this Christmas enrichment was designed to spark curiosity, encourage natural behaviours, and keep minds active during the holiday season.

A huge shoutout to our incredible WAV team for turning creativity into care and making enrichment both meaningful and magical.

From all of us in the WAV department, we wish you a joyful, peaceful Holiday season filled with wonder and connection.
