BOA - Because of Animals Foundation

BOA - Because of Animals Foundation BOA Foundation, formerly known as the Cheetah Preservation Foundation, represents the next evolution of our conservation mission. Our name reflects our purpose.

Founded in 1988, the Cheetah Preservation Foundation was established to support the survival of cheetahs and other endangered species, while educating visitors about the growing challenges facing wildlife conservation. It also created opportunities for the public to actively contribute toward conservation efforts through membership support and conservation driven initiatives. While our roots remain deeply connected to cheetah conservation, the challenges facing biodiversity today demand a broader response. Across the globe, countless species are under pressure from habitat loss, illegal wildlife trade, climate change, pollution, and human conflict. Because of Animals was created to answer that call. The BOA Foundation focuses on the protection, care, conservation, and long term survival of endangered, vulnerable, and at risk species across a wider conservation landscape. From large predators to lesser known species often overlooked in conservation conversations, our mission is driven by one simple truth: every species matters. Through conservation initiatives, education, rescue support, rehabilitation partnerships, species advocacy, research, community outreach, and environmental sustainability projects, BOA aims to create meaningful impact where wildlife needs it most. Because of Animals exists because wildlife deserves a future, and because people still have the power to protect it. This is more than a rebrand. It is a renewed commitment to conservation without limits.

๐Ÿ… SWEET 16 FOR OUR SNOW-WHITE KING! ๐Ÿค

Today, we're celebrating a very special milestone as our beautiful Snow White Bengal Tiger, Nevada, turns 16!

While today is all about celebrating this magnificent boy, his birthday comes with a heartfelt reminder of the challenges we are still facing.

Earlier this year, the devastating floods caused extensive damage to Nevada's habitat, leaving his home in need of major repairs. Months later, the damage remains, and we are still working tirelessly to raise the funds needed to restore his space.

Did you know? Tigers (Panthera tigris), including the Bengal Tiger subspecies, are classified as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. With wild tiger populations continuing to face threats such as habitat loss, poaching and human-wildlife conflict, conservation awareness remains more important than ever.

This is where YOU can make a difference!

Through the BOA Foundation, you can support Nevada in two meaningful ways:

๐Ÿพ Make a donation towards the restoration of his habitat.

๐Ÿพ Symbolically adopt Nevada and become part of his ongoing care journey. Animal adoptions are a wonderful way to contribute towards the nutrition, enrichment, veterinary care and daily wellbeing of the animals who call Cango Wildlife home.

Every contribution, big or small, brings us one step closer to rebuilding what was lost and continuing to provide the exceptional care Nevada deserves.

Want to be part of Nevada's journey? Comment "ADOPT" below to find out more about our animal adoption programme, or get in touch to learn how you can donate towards restoring his habitat!

Happy 16th Birthday, Nevada! Here's to a brighter future for our beautiful boy. ๐Ÿค

๐ŸŒŠ NATIONAL MARINE WEEK | THE SUCKERMOUTH CATFISH ๐ŸŸ

Meet one of the underwater world's most fascinating cleaners, the Suckermouth Catfish, also known as the Plecostomus!

Native to the freshwater rivers and streams of South America, these unusual fish are perfectly adapted to life along the riverbed.

๐ŸŸ DID YOU KNOW?

๐ŸŒฟ Nature's grazers: Their specialised sucker-shaped mouths allow them to attach to rocks and submerged surfaces while scraping away algae and other organic material.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Built-in armour: Unlike many fish, Plecostomus have rows of hard, bony plates covering much of their bodies, providing protection against predators.

๐ŸŒ™ Night-time explorers: These fish are primarily nocturnal, spending much of the day hiding and becoming more active after dark.

๐Ÿ’ง Freshwater survivors: Some Suckermouth Catfish can tolerate low-oxygen conditions by gulping air at the surface.

Although they are often called "cleaner fish", Plecostomus play a much bigger role in freshwater ecosystems. Their feeding habits contribute to nutrient cycling and help maintain the balance of their natural habitats.

As National Marine Week draws to a close, we're reminded that conservation doesn't stop at the ocean's edge. Our rivers, lakes and wetlands deserve just as much attention and protection.

๐Ÿข A TURTLE WITH A SOFT SIDE!๐ŸŒŠ

Continuing our National Marine Week celebrations, we're introducing one of the more unusual residents in our care, the Chinese Softshell Turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis)!

Unlike most turtles, this fascinating freshwater species doesn't have a hard, scaly shell. Instead, its flattened shell is covered in soft, leathery skin, helping it move efficiently through the water and bury itself in sandy or muddy riverbeds.

๐ŸŒฟ DID YOU KNOW?

๐Ÿข A built-in snorkel: Its long, flexible snout allows it to breathe at the water's surface while keeping most of its body hidden underwater.

๐ŸŸ An aquatic hunter: Chinese Softshell Turtles are primarily carnivorous, feeding on fish, aquatic insects, crustaceans and other small aquatic animals.

๐Ÿฅš Life begins on land: Females lay clutches of approximately 8 to 30 eggs in nests dug into sandy soil, with clutch sizes varying.

๐ŸŒ IUCN RED LIST STATUS: VULNERABLE (VU)

Wild populations face significant threats from habitat loss, water pollution and harvesting for food and traditional markets. Although the species is widely farmed, protecting wild populations and their freshwater habitats remains essential.

๐Ÿ’š HOW CAN YOU HELP?

By supporting the BOA Foundation and our Wildlife Adoption Programme, you're helping us provide dedicated animal care, specialised nutrition and enriching environments for the incredible species in our care.

Because every species has a story worth protecting.

๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŒฟ DOUBLE THE FLOOF, DOUBLE THE CELEBRATIONS! ๐ŸŽ‰

It's a very special day for our woolly duo, Sage and Rosemary, who are celebrating their 5th birthday today!

These two beautiful Merino sheep are more than just adorable faces. They're part of a breed famous for producing some of the finest, softest wool in the world!

๐ŸŒฑ DID EWE KNOW?

๐Ÿ‘ Merino sheep originated in Spain and have become an important part of South Africa's agricultural heritage.

๐ŸŒฟ Unlike hair sheep, Merinos grow wool continuously and require regular shearing to keep their fleece manageable and support their welfare.

๐Ÿ‘ Sheep are highly social animals that form strong bonds with their flockmates. They can even recognise and remember the faces of other sheep and humans!

๐Ÿ’š WANT TO MAKE THEIR BIRTHDAY EXTRA SPECIAL?

Through the BOA Foundation's Wildlife Adoption Programme, you can symbolically adopt an animal and help support the ongoing care, nutrition and enrichment that our animals receive.

Because conservation and compassionate animal care extend to creatures of all shapes, sizes and levels of fluff!

Happy 5th Birthday, Sage and Rosemary! Here's to another year of woolly adventures! ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿข MARINE WEEK | MEET THE YELLOW-SPOTTED AMAZON RIVER TURTLE

Say hello to the Yellow-Spotted Amazon River Turtle (Podocnemis unifilis), a fascinating freshwater species found throughout the Amazon and Orinoco river systems of South America.

๐Ÿ’ง HABITAT
These turtles inhabit rivers, lakes, flooded forests and other freshwater environments, spending much of their lives in the water.

๐ŸŒฟ DIET
They are omnivores, although much of their diet consists of plant material. They feed on aquatic vegetation, leaves, fruits and seeds, while also taking animal matter when available.

๐Ÿฅš CLUTCH SIZE
When it is time to nest, females leave the water and dig nests along riverbanks and sandy areas. A single nest can contain approximately **7 to 52 eggs**, with larger females generally laying larger clutches. The tiny hatchlings emerge after a little over two months.

โณ LIFESPAN
These turtles are built for the long haul. Yellow-Spotted Amazon River Turtles can live for up to 70 years.

๐Ÿ’› WHAT ARE THE YELLOW SPOTS?
The species gets its name from the distinctive yellow markings found on the head, which are particularly noticeable in younger turtles.

๐ŸŒŽ WHY CONSERVATION MATTERS
The Yellow-Spotted Amazon River Turtle is listed as Vulnerable, with wild populations facing pressures including hunting, egg collection and disturbance of important nesting areas.

During National Marine Week, we are celebrating more than our oceans. Freshwater ecosystems, from rivers and wetlands to lakes and floodplains, are vital habitats for an incredible diversity of species.

Healthy waters mean healthy ecosystems.๐Ÿ’ง

06/10/2026

๐ŸŸ A world of colour beneath the surface.

For National Marine Week, weโ€™re diving into the fascinating world of Malawi Cichlids.

Lake Malawi is one of Africaโ€™s Great Lakes and is home to an extraordinary diversity of Cichlids, with hundreds of species found within its waters. Many are endemic, meaning they occur naturally nowhere else on Earth.

Their incredible variety of colours, patterns, behaviours and feeding adaptations makes them a remarkable example of biodiversity and evolution in action.

But freshwater ecosystems matter far beyond the species we see. Healthy lakes and rivers support complex food webs, surrounding wildlife and millions of people who depend on freshwater resources.

This National Marine Week, weโ€™re celebrating the incredible life found beneath the surface and the importance of protecting our aquatic ecosystems. ๐ŸŒŠ

Because of animals. Because every ecosystem matters.

๐ŸŒŠ NATIONAL MARINE WEEK

This week, weโ€™re turning our attention to life in and around our waters, starting with one seriously prehistoric-looking resident: the Snapping Turtle. ๐Ÿข

Built for life in freshwater, snapping turtles are powerful aquatic reptiles known for their strong jaws, long tails and rugged shells. They spend much of their time beneath the surface, playing their part in the ecosystems they call home.

And while they may not live in the ocean, healthy rivers, wetlands and freshwater systems are all connected to the bigger picture. Protecting our waterways means protecting the incredible diversity of life that depends on them.

Throughout National Marine Week, weโ€™ll be introducing you to more of the fascinating aquatic species in our care and sharing why protecting our water ecosystems matters.

This week, we celebrate the wild lives that depend on healthy waters.

๐ŸŒฟCELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF CONSERVATION

Conservation is never the work of one organisation alone, and milestones like this deserve to be celebrated across our conservation community.

This Saturday, the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) hosts its 100th Annual General Meeting, marking an incredible century of environmental education, conservation and advocacy in South Africa.

At the BOA Foundation, we believe there is great value in conservation organisations supporting, celebrating and learning from one another. Weโ€™re therefore delighted to shine a light on this special milestone and invite our community to join WESSA online for the occasion. ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŽ‰ KYLE IS 13! ๐ŸŽ‚๐Ÿ’

Today weโ€™re celebrating one of our very special Ring-Tailed Lemurs, Kyle, who turns 13! ๐Ÿฅณ

Yulan, one of our wonderful Volunteer Hosts, is taking us along to Kyleโ€™s birthday party, complete with some special birthday enrichment and, of course, a few tasty treats. Because whatโ€™s a birthday without snacks?

But thereโ€™s an important reason we celebrate these incredible animals too. Ring-Tailed Lemurs are currently listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, with their wild populations threatened primarily by habitat loss, hunting and the illegal wildlife trade.

Through the BOA Foundation Adoption Programme, you can symbolically adopt an animal like Kyle and directly support the care, enrichment and conservation work that goes into giving our animals the very best lives possible.

๐Ÿ’› Want to become part of Kyleโ€™s story? Adopt one of our animals through BOA Foundation and help us continue doing more .

Happy 13th Birthday, Kyle! ๐ŸŽˆ
