25/11/2025
October 24, 2025 — Day 2 of the 40th Anniversary Meeting began with the inspiring voices of the University of Puerto Rico – Humacao Choir, reminding us that science and art share a rhythm of creativity and hope.
We then welcomed a powerful keynote address by AAAS CEO Dr. Sudip Parikh, followed by an emotional and insightful Plenary Session: Science in the Caribbean — Past, Present & Future, where past presidents reflected on four decades of leadership and impact.
Immediately after the plenary, we transitioned into our first scientific session of the day:
Scientific Session I — Climate Change, Environment & Sustainability hosted by the Center for Resilience to Climate Change (CRCC-UPR)
with Dr. Keyla Soto, Dr. Laura Cabrera, Dr. Maritza Barreto, and Dr. Edwin Hernández, who presented current challenges and community-centered solutions shaping the environmental future of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.
We then celebrated one of the most meaningful moments of the meeting:
Lucy Gaspar Award for Excellence in Science Education 2025
presented to Janelise Aldea Delgado, joined by Lucy’s daughter and grandson — a moving reminder of how one educator can transform generations through passion and mentorship.
Following the celebration, we continued with:
Scientific Session II — STEM Education & Community Engagement
featuring Dr. Ángel Acosta, Dr. Angelina Ruiz, Dr. Adrianne Tossas, and Dr. Ingrid Montes, who emphasized the importance of accessible, culturally relevant, and community-engaged STEM education.
We concluded Day 2 with:
Scientific Session III — STEM Workforce Development & Industry Innovation
A dynamic and forward-looking conversation moderated by Dr. Greetchen Díaz, with the participation of Ing. Lucy Crespo and Jose L. Rivera, MBA. Together, they explored key opportunities to strengthen Puerto Rico’s STEM workforce, expand industry–academic partnerships, and accelerate innovation across sectors.
To all our speakers, partners, and attendees:
