Somos Amigos Medical Missions

Somos Amigos Medical Missions We operate a primary care medical and dental clinic in the mountains of the Dominican Republic. We are small, but we have a large mission. Gracias.

Somos Amigos Medical Missions® is neither a religious nor political organization. We are grass-roots and humble, but we think big. We are a group of friends, colleagues, professionals and students, young and not-so-young who are brought together by one goal: to connect with those who struggle, to help them and to empower them, and to improve their lives t...hrough quality medical and dental care.

We believe we have an obligation to reach out and to try to make a difference in our world. Somos Amigos® provides primary care to thousands of patients. But we believe that we bring our patients more than medicines and tooth fillings and vitamins—we are bringing hope. The relationships we have with those we serve are fundamental to our identity. We have connected with people, with communities, in a real and lasting way. On a wall near our pharmacy, a volunteer left a sign that reads, “If you have come expecting to heal the sick, you will be surprised, for the sick will heal you.” Beautiful connections are made on that Naranjito hillside, little miracles of healing. Lives are being changed. For Somos Amigos®, the point is not so much what we do, as marvelous as it is, but rather how we do what we do. From our organization’s inception, we have worked alongside our Dominican brothers and sisters. We make all of our decisions with them; we are always careful not to impose ourselves on our hosts and patients; we are respectful of the dignity and integrity of the people we serve. While the clinic is open, our volunteers live in homes with campesinos. About a dozen people from Naranjito work alongside us while we work. Our host community elects a Comité de la Clínicá, and that committee guides our work as much as our Board of Directors back home. Our hosts help sustain Somos Amigos; our work is just as much their call to serve as it is ours. We have become a part of the life of Naranjito, and the people living in that community have become an important part of our lives. As Somos Amigos® looks to the future, we ask ourselves, “How can we serve more?” and, “How can we serve with an even higher level of care?”

April Jornada — Closed

In front of this clinic, we gather one last time — not as strangers, not even just as a team… but as something deeper.

A family built through service.

Five days ago, we arrived with supplies, plans, and purpose.
Today, we leave with something far greater — the stories, the connections, the lives touched… and the quiet certainty that this work matters.

Every person in this photo gave a part of themselves — their time, their energy, their heart — to something bigger than all of us. And in return, we were changed.

It’s never easy to leave.
But El Naranjito stays with us… always.

Until July — with grateful hearts and the same promise to return.

Day 5 of the April Jornada

Today, every corner of the clinic told a story.

In the pharmacy, hands prepared what patients would carry home.
In intake, names became faces, and faces became stories.
In the dental area, smiles were restored with care and patience.
In the lab, quiet precision turned into answers.

And in between it all — people, working with purpose, giving their all, one moment at a time.

This is what it looks like when everything comes together.
Not perfectly, not effortlessly — but with heart, with sacrifice, and with an unwavering commitment to serve.

The final day is never just an ending…
it’s a reflection of everything that made it possible.

Day 4 of the April Jornada (Yesterday)

After a long day of seeing patients, the work didn’t end.
Our physicians stayed behind — organizing records, closing the day with the same care they began it.

And when it was finally time to leave, the rain was still falling.

Ponchos came out, laughter followed… and for those without one, the team found a way — wrapping themselves in large plastic bags, covering their feet, and walking together into the night.

It wasn’t planned. It wasn’t perfect.
But it was beautiful.

Because this is what it looks like when people give their all — not just in the clinic, but in every small moment in between.

Day 4 of the April Jornada

Yesterday, she wasn’t in the photo — because she was exactly where she is always needed most: with her patients.

Today, we pause to recognize Dr. Zolanyi, caring for families, for children, for the smallest lives placed gently in her hands.

In this moment, a baby rests in her mother’s arms as she listens, checks, and reassures — a quiet exchange of trust, care, and compassion.

This is what medicine looks like at its most human: not rushed, not distant — but close, present, and full of heart.

Because sometimes, the most powerful care is the kind that feels like comfort.

Patient #10,000

Today, in the middle of a beautiful Jornada, something extraordinary happened — we welcomed our 10,000th patient.

And she arrived in the most perfect way… with a gentle smile that said everything without a single word.

A tiny life, held with love, reminding us of why this journey began — and how far it has come.

10,000 stories.
10,000 lives touched.
10,000 reasons to keep going.

And today, that milestone was marked by a baby whose smile felt like a blessing to us all.

Day 4 of the April Jornada

Not all heroes wear white coats.

Some stand quietly beside them — listening, translating, bridging worlds that would otherwise never meet.

Our interpreters carry a responsibility that goes far beyond language. They give patients a voice, and in return, they give our team the ability to truly understand — not just symptoms, but stories, fears, and hope.

And among them is Loo, whose role is nothing short of essential — translating for those who speak only Creole, ensuring that no one is left unheard, unseen, or alone.

Because care begins with understanding…
and understanding begins with someone willing to listen.

This is what connection looks like.

Day 3 of the April Jornada

The day ended the way it was lived — under the rain.

Heavy showers followed us through the afternoon, soaking the paths, slowing the pace… but never the purpose.

And as we walked out of the clinic, wrapped in ponchos, tired but full, the sky softened — clouds settling in, a quiet fog rolling over the hills, and a kind of peace that only comes after giving your all.

These are the moments in between — the ones that don’t make the schedule, but stay in the heart forever.

Day 3 of the April Jornada

They come from different places — different paths that somehow led them all here.

Some have been here many times before, returning year after year, answering a calling that never fades. Others had been away, only to feel the pull back again. And today, some are experiencing this for the very first time — like Christine, who not only joined the Jornada for the first time, but is also visiting the Dominican Republic for the first time, helping bridge worlds through her voice and presence.

Alongside them is Zolanyi, our Dominican physician, who at the moment of this photo was already with a patient — exactly where she is always needed most.

Different journeys, different stories… yet all standing side by side, united by something deeper than medicine.

Because being here is not just about treating patients — it’s about connection, purpose, and the quiet decision to keep showing up for others.

Day 3 of the April Jornada

A beautiful blend of hands and hearts — Dominican and American, working as one.

In the dental area, there is a rhythm that goes beyond procedures — a shared understanding, a mutual respect, and a commitment to care that transcends language and borders.

Each smile restored carries more than just health — it carries dignity, confidence, and hope.

Together, this team reminds us that when compassion leads, differences disappear… and what remains is something truly powerful.
