Somos Amigos Medical Missions

Somos Amigos Medical Missions We operate a primary care medical and dental clinic in the mountains of the Dominican Republic. We are small, but we have a large mission. Gracias.

Somos Amigos Medical Missions® is neither a religious nor political organization. We are grass-roots and humble, but we think big. We are a group of friends, colleagues, professionals and students, young and not-so-young who are brought together by one goal: to connect with those who struggle, to help them and to empower them, and to improve their lives t...hrough quality medical and dental care.

We believe we have an obligation to reach out and to try to make a difference in our world. Somos Amigos® provides primary care to thousands of patients. But we believe that we bring our patients more than medicines and tooth fillings and vitamins—we are bringing hope. The relationships we have with those we serve are fundamental to our identity. We have connected with people, with communities, in a real and lasting way. On a wall near our pharmacy, a volunteer left a sign that reads, “If you have come expecting to heal the sick, you will be surprised, for the sick will heal you.” Beautiful connections are made on that Naranjito hillside, little miracles of healing. Lives are being changed. For Somos Amigos®, the point is not so much what we do, as marvelous as it is, but rather how we do what we do. From our organization’s inception, we have worked alongside our Dominican brothers and sisters. We make all of our decisions with them; we are always careful not to impose ourselves on our hosts and patients; we are respectful of the dignity and integrity of the people we serve. While the clinic is open, our volunteers live in homes with campesinos. About a dozen people from Naranjito work alongside us while we work. Our host community elects a Comité de la Clínicá, and that committee guides our work as much as our Board of Directors back home. Our hosts help sustain Somos Amigos; our work is just as much their call to serve as it is ours. We have become a part of the life of Naranjito, and the people living in that community have become an important part of our lives. As Somos Amigos® looks to the future, we ask ourselves, “How can we serve more?” and, “How can we serve with an even higher level of care?”

Today, we walked together. Today, our Somos Amigos family proudly marched in the Dominican Day Parade in New York. We may have been a small group, but every step carried something much bigger than ourselves.

A celebration of the culture that shapes the communities we serve, and the story we continue to share. Every smile, every conversation, every person who asked who we are is a reminder that impact often begins with connection. Today wasn’t just about being there. It was about planting seeds for what’s to come. Inviting more people into something that serves and heals. The road ahead is full of possibility. And today, we took another step forward, together.

We’re excited to share a new chapter for Somos Amigos.

We have a new look — but our mission remains the same:
to serve and to heal the communities we support. 💙💚

We’re still holding on to what we experienced yesterday…

Sharing a few more moments from a day that moved all of us —
from the blessing during the Mass to the first pickaxe that marked a new beginning.

Representing the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader,
we were honored to have Senator Daniel Rivera with us,
alongside community leaders, patients, and over 250 people who witnessed this historic step.

It was a moment of unity, of faith, and of purpose.

One we will never forget.

We said something big was coming…
you felt it… you waited for it…

and today — it happened.

Today, we took the “primer picazo” to the ground.

And even though we’ve been building up to this moment for days…
nothing prepares you for what it actually feels like.

There were tears.
There was silence.
There were moments where words just weren’t enough.

Because this wasn’t just a ceremony.
This wasn’t just symbolic.

This was real.

More than 250 people gathered — patients, community leaders, friends…
all standing together, witnessing what so many once thought was just an idea.

And in that moment, we were all moved.

With Frank (President of the organization),
Sheila (Board Chair),
Odalis Peralta (Clinic Manager),
Daniel Rivera (Senator of the province of Santiago),
Ivanova (Mayor), and Alfredo (Mayor and her husband) —

standing side by side, not just holding pickaxes…
but carrying the weight of everything this moment represents.

Surrounded by belief, by purpose, by a community that refuses to give up on hope…
this moment felt bigger than all of us.

And as if that wasn’t enough —
today also marked the start of a new chapter.

We unveiled our new logo.
We launched our new website.

A new image.
A new platform.
A new era.

Everything changed today.

And if you’ve been following this journey since Saturday…
now you understand why we kept saying it.

This… is only the beginning.

Before the first step… we gather.

As the community begins to arrive, something beautiful is already unfolding.

Hands preparing every detail,
quiet moments inside the church,
and just outside… a space ready to welcome something meaningful.

It’s more than preparation —
it’s faith, it’s unity, it’s the beginning of something bigger than all of us.

The first picazo is almost here.

We’ll be live at 10:00 AM (DR time) — join us. 💙🇩🇴
