ico. SAG must stress the fact that we are not a shelter; we do not accept cats at our location no matter the issue. This is not because we don’t want to; it is because we don’t have enough space or resources past our current obligations. We do have cats available for adoption through our foster homes and at the local Adoption Centers in Petsmart and Petco stores. Do you think you can help? Contact us at [email protected]. Save A Gato is a non-profit organization that began in 2004. It is the only non-profit that has an agreement with The National Park Service to manage a colony of cats on national park land(a BIG thanks to the NPS!). This is something the founder, Sylvine Sherwood along with the rest of the volunteers is very proud of. Save A Gato began in mind to ease the population of cats in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is suppose to have animal control. Each municipality is in charge of their strays. San Juan has animal control however they are overwhelmed and have a small budget. The municipality does not donate nor helps SAG. This means Save A Gato relies solely on donations, grants, contests and dedicated volunteers. It is never too late to help or make things right for all the animals that deserve a second chance, not only our Gatos! Save A Gato manages the colony of cats on the Paseo del Morro in Old San Juan. We manage them through TNR. This stands for trap, neuter, and release. Cats are first trapped, then with the help of local vets we are able to neuter, vaccinate and de-worm the cats. As we are not a shelter the cats are then returned healthy to the Paseo to lounge and sunbathe on the rocks. We do offer the option to adopt cats while they are going through the TNR process. As we are not a shelter the cats that are not successful in our adoption program are returned to their original colonies and are lovingly monitored by our volunteers and residents. Is it working? Since 2004 the colony has decreased 50% solely through our efforts of TNR and adoptions when possible. We like to consider ourselves in the maintenance phase of the colony. Volunteers visit the colony once a day to monitor the health of the cats and kittens while continuing the TNR program of new cats. Adopting a friend: Our adoption process starts with you! Contact us to arrange a visit to see the cat that caught your eye and that will soon embrace your heart. Once you have been introduced to each other, there is a small amount of paper work for you to fill out before you can return to take home your new best friend. Adoptions are much appreciated as the life of a street cat is 5 years compared to a house cat of 15+ while kittens have an even smaller chance of surviving past a couple of months. We also adopt many of our cats Nationally and Internationally. With the help of the volunteers, we are able to humanly trap and care for the cats until hopefully a wonderful person like yourself comes along to change the life of one less fortunate. So take a stroll on the famous National Park trail Paseo del Morro in Old San Juan to see several cats lounging on the rocks sunbathing with happy smiles.
