Las Casas de la Selva, Patillas, sustainable forestry & rainforest enrichment since 1983.

HISTORY: Established in 1983, the land known as Las Casas de la Selva is the home of Tropic Ventures Sustainable Forestry & Rainforest Enrichment Project. It is located in the southern mountains of the island, adjacent to the Carité State Forest. The Institute of Ecotechnics initiated this unique project in Patillas, Puerto Rico, pioneering experiments in sustainable rainforest ecology, through l

ine-planting of valuable timber trees. Using this approach, nearly 300 acres of the 1000-acre property have been planted with over 40,000 native and exotic hardwood trees with extremely promising results, working in cooperation with the Puerto Rican Department of Natural Resources, and The International Institute of Tropical Forestry. Las Casas de la Selva recognized as an ‘auxiliary forest’ in the US national park system of classification, and in 2011 the project was certified under The Forest Stewardship Program. Tropic Ventures Research & Education was incorporated in 1998 as a non-profit in Puerto Rico to support the project’s research and education activities.

El 1 de agosto, un equipo de Global Works compuesto por 24 estudiantes de todo Estados Unidos se unió a nosotros en Las Casas de la Selva para una jornada productiva, aunque embarrada, bajo imponentes árboles de caoba, mahoe, ausubo, granadillo y tabonuco.

Juntos, limpiamos la maleza, mejoramos el drenaje y construimos una represa de escombros en un área afectada por un deslizamiento de tierra durante el huracán Fiona. Restablecer el acceso por carretera es esencial para la conservación de nuestros bosques madereros.

¡Muchísimas gracias a los líderes de Global Works, Lauren, Jorge y Fabricio; a los jefes de equipo 3t y Jon Warwick; a nuestro vecino Mike Alvarez; y a Monique Nieves por el delicioso almuerzo!

This magnificent Swietenia × aubrevilleana (Puerto Rican hybrid mahogany) was planted at Las Casas de la Selva, Patillas, around 1986.

Nearly forty years later, it stands as living proof that sustainable forestry is measured not in months or years—but in generations.

Every tree we plant protects watersheds, stores carbon, creates wildlife habitat, and demonstrates that forests can be managed with care while continuing to thrive.

At our project in Patillas, Puerto Rico, we've spent over four decades restoring degraded land into a diverse, productive rainforest. The forest you see today exists because people believed it was worth planting trees whose full grandeur they might never live to see, or whose wood they might never smell.
