La Sociedad Meteorológica de Puerto Rico (SMPR) fue fundada el 19 de abril de 2006 por un grupo de estudiantes de Meteorología del RUM. Motivados por su pasión y dedicación hacia la ciencia, decidieron crear el primer Capítulo Estudiantil de la American Meteorological Society (AMS) en Puerto Rico y el Caribe. Desde ese año, la SMPR ha crecido enormemente y actualmente, luego de siete años de haber
se fundado, continúa con la misma fuerza e ímpetu con la que comenzó. Esto, gracias a sus miembros quienes están sumamente comprometidos con sus estudios y en regar la voz sobre la Meteorología como carrera profesional. Esta Sociedad es parte del Recinto Universitario de Mayaguez, de la Universidad de Puerto Rico. La SMPR continúa siendo una asociación estudiantil del RUM y realiza múltiples actividades educativas, profesionales y sociales en el RUM y alrededor de Puerto Rico. The Sociedad Meteorológica de Puerto Rico/AMS UPRM Student Chapter (SMPR) was founded on April 19, 2006 by a group of Meteorology students from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. Motivated by their passion and dedication to this science, they decided to create the first Student Chapter of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. Since that year, the SMPR has grown tremendously and now after seven years of being founded, continues with the same strength and momentum with which it began. This, thanks to its members who are deeply committed to their studies and to spread the word about Meteorology as a professional career. The SMPR continues to be a UPRM student association, and it performes several educational, professional, and social activites at UPRM and around Puerto Rico.
