Navigating sea laws: UNCLOS 🌊⚖️

UNCLOS - the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea - sets the legal framework for how countries use, manage and protect the world’s oceans and seas.

It helps define maritime zones, supports international cooperation and creates common rules for safer, more sustainable use of marine areas.

Common rules for stronger ocean protection.

Meet the ECOMARINAS partners! ⚓

Today we introduce: .deutschland 🇩🇪

EUCC-D is a non-profit organisation working for the sustainable development of coasts and seas in Germany. Based in Rostock-Warnemünde, it connects coastal science, practical knowledge and everyday decision-making.

In ECOMARINAS, EUCC-D brings its coastal management perspective into the marina sector, supporting practical learning, cooperation and more sustainable approaches to water and wastewater management in marinas.

Because cleaner waters start with better everyday practices 🌊

The Baltic Sea is not just a beautiful view.It is a living system — and it is under pressure.

Every extra load of pollution matters.Every action to reduce it matters too.

Protecting the Baltic starts with reducing what we put into it. 🌊

The Baltic Sea may look calm from the deck of a sailboat or a beach towel… but underwater, it’s far from silent..

Engines, propellers, ferries, motorboats - all create underwater noise that travels for kilometres and affects marine wildlife living beneath the surface.

For harbour porpoises, seals and fish, sound is essential for survival:

🐬 finding food
🐟 communication
🦭 orientation and avoiding danger

And while one recreational boat may seem harmless, thousands of vessels during the summer create a constant background noise in the Baltic Sea.

The good news?
Sailors and boaters can help reduce it ⚓

Simple ways to make a difference:

-Sail instead of using the engine whenever possible
-Slow down — less speed = less underwater noise
-Avoid sensitive wildlife areas
-Respect marine animals and keep a distance

The sea gives us freedom, adventure, and peace.
Protecting its silence is part of respecting it 💙

Two days. Two inland locations.
Many conversations about water.

Our 6th ECOMARINAS study visit took us to Charzykowy and Biała Góra — places that show how closely lakes, rivers, marinas and the Baltic Sea are connected.

We talked about sailing education, responsible tourism, science-based decisions and the role of local harbours in protecting aquatic environments.

Most of all, we were reminded that change often begins in everyday places — with people who know their waters, use them and care for their future.

In our People of the Sea series, we explore not only individual stories, but also the traditions of communities whose lives, work and identity are inseparably connected with the ocean.

Have you ever heard of the Ama - Japan’s “women of the sea”?

For generations, Ama divers have entered the sea on a single breath, collecting shellfish, seaweed and other marine life. Their knowledge has been passed down from mother to daughter, creating a unique tradition built on skill, resilience and deep respect for the water.

Today, the Ama remind us that the sea is not only a resource - it is heritage, culture and connection.

From ancient traditions to modern marinas, our bond with the water is built on respect, care and responsibility.

The marinas of the future start now. ⚓🌊

As recreational boating continues to grow across the Baltic Sea, marinas have an increasingly important role to play in protecting the marine environment.

That is why we need ecomarinas - places that combine smart infrastructure, responsible environmental management, and practical solutions for everyday use.

Because better marinas mean better protection for the Baltic.

Meet the crew! ⚓

Many of you already know that ECOMARINAS brings together 8 partners from Poland, Sweden, Germany and Lithuania 🌍

As the project moves forward, this is the right moment to introduce the organisations behind it and to show who is helping turn ECOMARINAS ideas for more sustainable marinas into real action across the Baltic Sea.

We are starting with the Project Leader: Gdańsk Sports Centre (GOS)

GOS combines strategic leadership with everyday practice. Its experience in marina management, water activities and maritime education helps turn the project’s goals into real action 🚤💙

As we look back at the first half of the ECOMARINAS project, we return to moments that showed how environmental education can begin with curiosity, creativity and shared discovery.

During the Fahrenheit Science Picnic at in Gdańsk, we created a space where learning about the Baltic Sea became an adventure. Children drew marine creatures, explored who lives in the Baltic, and discovered why this ecosystem is so unique. Jellyfish, cod, seagulls, herring, algae — each drawing became a small story about the sea. 🌿🌊🐟

One of the most popular activities was our “mini beach”, where the youngest visitors searched for hidden plastic in the sand and learned where marine litter comes from and how it affects sea life. 🏖️🔎 At the same time, we invited adults to talk with us about marinas, ports, shipping and how everyday choices can help protect the Baltic Sea. ⚓🚢♻️

This day reminded us of something very simple: to protect the sea, we first need to know it, appreciate it and care about it. 💙 And sometimes, that journey starts with a crayon in hand and a child’s curiosity about the world. 🖍️🌍

This was only one of many moments on our journey and we are not slowing down. This year, ECOMARINAS will continue to be present at events that bring people closer to the Baltic Sea, its challenges, and the everyday actions that can help protect it. 💙

When was the last time you truly stopped?

To touch the water.
To run your hand along a leaf or the bark of a tree.
To listen to birdsong and the sounds of the world around you.
To appreciate the rain and pause for a moment to notice what surrounds you 🌿🌍

Now that we are past the halfway point of the ECOMARINAS project, we are looking back at the moments that have shaped our journey so far.

During our Immersive Walk along Gdańsk’s marinas, we invited you to pause and rediscover the city, water and nature with us.

We set off from the marina at Sienna Grobla, passed through Marina Gdańsk at Szafarnia, and continued to the Żabi Kruk marina, where we got into kayaks 🚣🏻‍♂️ Along the way, we saw how marinas and the city can become places where people, infrastructure, water and nature meet 🌱

Together, we immersed ourselves in Gdańsk’s urban nature. Walking along the Motława, we touched the leaves of linden, poplar and willow trees. We admired fourth nature and the wild birches that seem able to grow anywhere, even on the abandoned rooftops.

As we paddled along the Motława, we listened for the song of the reed warbler 🐦 and felt grateful for that rain 💧For the water we so deeply need in times of drought.

Our shared reflection began with a simple thought: we are all bodies of water, interconnected, interdependent, and co-creating the hydrosphere.

Thank you, Sisi Stano for guiding us through urban nature and sharing your love of it with us ❤ And thank you to everyone who joined us.

The walk was organised as part of the European Funds Open Days and the ECOMARINAS project, which aims to raise awareness of threats to the Baltic ecosystem and promote sustainable practices in marina management.
